From haunting harmonicas to acid trips gone wrong, here’s the Sabbath stuff that’ll melt your brain like a fuzz pedal in the sun…
1. They Were Nearly Called “Earth” 🌍
Before becoming Black Sabbath, the lads gigged around Brum under the name Earth. They changed it after people kept mixing them up with another local band. Imagine a doom anthem called “Paranoid”… by Earth. Nah, mun.
2. Their Name Came From A Boris Karloff Movie 🎥
Geezer Butler spotted a cinema showing Black Sabbath, a 1963 horror flick starring Boris Karloff. Lightbulb moment: “People pay to be scared. Let’s do that in music.” Proper job, lads.
3. Ozzy Worked in a Slaughterhouse 🐷🔪
Before he was the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy was elbow-deep in cow guts. Explains a lot, doesn’t it?
4. Tony Iommi Lost the Tips of His Fingers… THEN Played Guitar 🎸🩸
Iommi lost the tops of two fingers in an industrial accident at 17. Instead of packing it in, he made his own plastic fingertip caps and downtuned his guitar. Boom: the birth of heavy metal.
5. They Wrote Their First Album in ONE DAY 😱
The entire Black Sabbath album was recorded in just 12 hours. That’s less time than most bands spend tuning their guitars these days.
6. Geezer Butler Saw a Ghost in His Bedroom 👻
No, not a post-pint hallucination. A spectral figure in black robes appeared after he read an occult book. Ozzy took the book and chucked it in a canal. Wise move, butt.
7. Ozzy Used to Wear His Wife’s Dress On Stage 👗
When Sharon wasn’t watching, Ozzy would nick her clothes to wear on stage. Glam? Camp? Metal? Yes to all of it.
8. “Iron Man” Was Originally Called “Iron Bloke” 🇬🇧
Only in Britain would a colossal metal classic start life as Iron Bloke. Thankfully, someone slapped sense into them.
9. They Were Banned from Some Radio Stations for “Satanic Themes” 😈
Despite denying any occult worship, the band were blacklisted by some stations and churches. That only made the kids love ’em more. Classic rock marketing.
10. They Played to Over 500,000 People in Moscow in 1989 🇷🇺
At the Moscow Music Peace Festival, Sabbath helped melt Cold War frost. Imagine that wall of sound echoing through the USSR. Tidy.
11. “Paranoid” Was a Last-Minute Filler Track 🧠⚡
They needed 3 extra minutes to fill the album, so they smashed out Paranoid in about 20 minutes. And it became one of their biggest songs. Slaps harder than a steel toe boot to the ribs.
12. Iommi Dated Lita Ford in the ’80s ❤️🔥
Yup, the metal power couple that never was. Apparently, it ended… badly. So no Heaven and Hellraiser Babies, then.
13. The Devil Horns? Nah, That Was Dio 🤘
Ozzy didn’t invent the devil horns. Ronnie James Dio brought it from his Italian grandmother who used it to ward off the evil eye. Metal origins: pure folklore 🔮
14. Bill Ward Disappeared for Days After One Gig 🚫🥁
He once went missing for two full days after a heavy night out and was found wearing nothing but a women’s dress and slippers. Cardiff, was it?
15. The “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” Album Broke Their Brains 🧠💥
During recording, the riffs were so heavy they literally triggered migraines in the studio. That’s not a metaphor. That’s a fact.
16. They Once Got Banned from the BBC 📻
The Beeb refused to air them on Top of the Pops because they were “too heavy.” Meanwhile, The Wombles were out here playing glockenspiels. Only in Britain, mun.
17. There’s a LOT of Lawsuits in Their History ⚖️
If Sabbath were a law firm, they’d be Butler, Iommi & Sue Ya. From name rights to royalties, it’s been a proper legal mosh pit.
18. Ozzy Peed on The Alamo 🇺🇸🚽
Legendary rock ’n’ roll faux pas. He urinated on a sacred site while wearing Sharon’s dress. He was promptly arrested and banned from San Antonio for a decade.
19. Their First Ever Gig Was in a Pub Called The Crown 🍻
Still there in Birmingham, with a plaque and everything. Pop in, have a pint, and pretend you were there in ’68.
20. Tony Iommi Was Almost in JETHRO TULL?! 🐉
For a hot minute in 1968, Iommi joined Tull… but left almost immediately. He didn’t fancy the flute solos. Can’t blame him.
21. They Made the Guinness Book of World Records 🏆
For Loudest Band on Earth at one point. No surprises there. That guitar tone alone could flatten sheep in mid-Wales.
22. Their Final Gig Was in Their Hometown of Birmingham 🏠
February 4th, 2017. Tears, riffs, fireworks, and one last Children of the Grave. But let’s be honest – we’d all sell our nan to see one more reunion.
23. There’s a Species of Frog Named After Them 🐸🎶
Hyloscirtus mashpi – a freaky little tree frog discovered in Ecuador – was almost called “Black Sabbath Frog” because of its gothic look. Missed opportunity, that.
🕯️ BONUS: They Invented a Genre by Accident
They just wanted to sound spooky and heavy. Didn’t expect to kickstart a global movement. Doom, stoner, sludge, death, thrash, NWOBHM – all roads lead back to Sabbath.
So What’s Occurring Now?
Ozzy’s still the mad grandad of metal 🧓⚡, Tony’s still riffing, and fans from every generation still crank War Pigs like it’s gospel. Sabbath isn’t just a band – it’s a religion with distortion pedals.
Diolch, Black Sabbath. And diolch to you for reading, legend 🤘
