Clear the runway, tighten the battle jackets and warn the front row, butt — Saxon are going airborne again.

British heavy metal legends Saxon have announced an 11-date UK & Ireland tour for February 2027, and this one is coming with some serious old-school metal theatre. We’re not just talking loud guitars, denim, leather and a few cheeky pints before doors. Oh no. We’re talking the return of Saxon’s legendary 30-foot mechanised Eagle.

Yes mun. The Eagle is back. 🦅🤘

The run forms part of the band’s Gods of Thunder World Tour Part 1, kicking off at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Saturday 13th February 2027 before swooping through Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, Cardiff, Bristol, Southampton and London.

And because Saxon never do things by halves, fans can also expect the return of their mighty Castles & Eagles stage production — the kind of proper heavy metal spectacle that makes modern “big screen and some smoke” shows look like a school assembly with a fog machine.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED… AGAIN 🦅

For long-time Saxon fans, the Eagle is more than just a stage prop. It’s a symbol. A big, ridiculous, glorious, metal-as-hell symbol.

Originally built in the early 1980s as Saxon prepared to tour their classic Denim and Leather era, the mechanical Eagle became one of the band’s most iconic live visuals. Towering over crowds during their arena shows, it soon became part of Saxon folklore and helped inspire the title of their classic live album The Eagle Has Landed.

Now, decades later, that mighty beast is being dragged out of the heavy metal hangar once more.

This is not subtle. This is not polite. This is not a tasteful little lighting rig and a “thanks for coming” wave at the end.

This is Saxon saying:
“We are British heavy metal. Here is a massive mechanical bird. Deal with it.”

And honestly? Beautiful. No notes.

ONE SMALL CARDIFF CATCH… 😭

There is one bit of news that’ll sting a little for Welsh fans.

The 30-foot Eagle will appear at all UK and Ireland shows except Cardiff, due to venue restrictions at The Great Hall.

Now, as a Welsh-based rock and metal blog, we are legally required to be mildly dramatic about this.

Cardiff getting Saxon but not the Eagle feels a bit like getting chips without curry sauce. Still tidy, still worth having, but you know something massive is missing.

That said, Saxon in Cardiff is still Saxon in Cardiff. There will still be riffs. There will still be fists in the air. There will still be enough old-school metal energy to rattle the roof, frighten the bar staff and make someone’s denim jacket achieve sentience.

So yes, the Eagle may not fly in Wales — but the riffs absolutely will.

PRE-SALE AND TICKETS 🎟️

A 24-hour pre-sale was announced for Saxon’s UK shows, excluding Belfast, with general sale following shortly after.

As always with tours like this, the advice is simple: do not hang about.

Saxon fans are loyal, loud and usually quicker on the ticket button than a drummer spotting free beer backstage. With the Eagle returning and the Castles & Eagles production back on the road, these dates have “proper old-school metal pilgrimage” written all over them.

NEW ALBUM ON THE WAY TOO ⚡

As if a full UK and Ireland tour with a giant mechanical Eagle wasn’t enough, Saxon are also preparing to release their 25th studio album in early 2027 via Silver Lining Music.

That means this tour won’t just be a nostalgia victory lap. Expect new material, classic anthems, deep-cut possibility and the sort of heavy metal ceremony that Saxon have spent decades perfecting.

This is a band still flying the flag for British metal with both hands on the wheel, one boot on the monitor and absolutely no interest in quietly fading into the background.

WHY THIS TOUR MATTERS 🤘

Saxon are one of those bands who helped build the foundations that so many others now stomp across.

They were there when British heavy metal was becoming something louder, tougher and more defiant. They gave fans songs that sounded like engines, steelworks, motorways and festival fields after three days of questionable sleep. Their music has always had that working-class, no-nonsense, pint-raised spirit — and that’s exactly why people still turn up.

Because Saxon shows are not just concerts.

They are gatherings.

They are history lessons with bigger amps.

They are reminders that heavy metal doesn’t need to be polished within an inch of its life to matter. Sometimes it just needs riffs, volume, a loyal crowd and a giant mechanical Eagle flapping about like it owns the place.

THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT 🦅🔥

This is exactly the kind of gloriously over-the-top heavy metal chaos we love to see.

Saxon announcing a February 2027 UK & Ireland tour would already be big news. Saxon bringing back the legendary 30-foot Eagle turns it into a full-blown metal event.

It’s dramatic. It’s nostalgic. It’s loud. It’s a bit ridiculous. It’s absolutely brilliant.

And in a world where too many live shows are starting to feel a little too safe, Saxon are rolling back in with castles, thunder, history and a giant metal bird like they’ve just looked at subtlety and told it to jog on.

So polish the patches, prep the horns and get ready for take-off.

The Eagle is flying again. Saxon are back on the road. February 2027 just got a massive dose of British heavy metal thunder.

C’mon butt — this one’s going to be tidy. 🦅🤘🔥

🎸 THE LATE SHIFT ARE PROVING IT’S NEVER TOO LATE FOR GREAT ROCK ‘N’ ROLL 🎸

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
