Iron Maiden Manager Rod Smallwood Ribs the “Selfish Few” Fans Who Ignored No Phones Request 📵⚔️

“Scream for me, Birmingham! …but don’t film it on your bloody iPhone!”

That’s the gist of Rod Smallwood’s latest roasting session. The Iron Maiden manager — the man who’s kept Eddie fed and the band on the road for over four decades — has come out swinging against what he calls the “selfish few” who couldn’t resist whipping out their phones during Maiden’s current run of shows.

While most fans respected the band’s plea for a phone-free environment (a proper old-school, live-in-the-moment gig, like the sweaty days of the Ruskin Arms), a handful apparently decided they needed grainy clips for TikTok more than Bruce Dickinson needed crowd energy. And Rod was not amused.

The Statement Heard ’Round the Metal World 🎤

Smallwood’s words were blunt enough to make even Eddie raise an eyebrow. He praised the majority of fans who “embraced the spirit” of the request but went on to single out the minority who ignored it:

👉 “A selfish few decided their need for a poor-quality video outweighed the experience of those around them.”

That’s pure Rod. Old-school, no-nonsense, and basically telling the culprits: “You’re not just spoiling it for Bruce and Steve… you’re spoiling it for everyone else, mun.”

And he’s right. Imagine belting out “The Trooper” only to have some berk’s glowing phone screen in your peripheral vision. Or worse, a TikTok influencer with their back to the stage filming themselves during “Hallowed Be Thy Name.” That’s enough to make Nicko smash a cymbal in fury. 🥁💥

Iron Maiden and the War on Phones: A Timeline ⚡

Iron Maiden aren’t the only band fed up with the sea of screens. Metallica, Slipknot, and even smaller acts at Steelhouse and Bloodstock have all vented about it. But Maiden have a particular bone to pick. Here’s the road that got us here:

  • 2018 – Legacy of the Beast tour: Bruce regularly roasted fans mid-song for standing still while filming. “Put that bloody thing down and clap!” became his mid-gig mantra.
  • 2022 – Senjutsu shows: Signs went up asking fans to enjoy the show “in the moment.” Many did. Some didn’t. Cue Dickinson death stares. 👀
  • 2024 – Future Past tour: Maiden tried the “gentle” approach, dropping hints in interviews. But the screens were still out in force.
  • 2025 – 50th Anniversary Tour: The request became a firm policy. Rod’s statement is the clearest line in the sand yet: Maiden gigs are meant to be lived, not livestreamed.

And honestly? Fair play to them. These are monumental nights in rock history. They deserve sweaty fists in the air, not shaky 15-second Insta reels.

Why Rod’s Fury Resonates 🤬

This isn’t just about being an old man yelling at clouds. It’s about the sanctity of the gig. Here’s why Smallwood’s rant hits home:

  1. The Atmosphere – One glowing rectangle ruins the immersive vibe for everyone behind you. Eddie didn’t crawl out of a pyramid just to be blocked by your Samsung Galaxy.
  2. The Musicians’ Perspective – Bands feed off energy. They want roars, not rows of motionless fans staring through lenses.
  3. The “Bootleg” Factor – Iron Maiden pride themselves on sound, lighting, and visuals. Grainy clips don’t do it justice — and can even spoil surprises for future shows.
  4. The Spirit of Metal – Heavy metal’s always been about community, sweat, and shared madness. Not about going viral.

As Rod sees it: when you lift your phone, you’re lifting yourself out of the experience. You’re no longer a fan in the crowd — you’re a broadcaster. And that’s not very Maiden, is it? 🤨

Fan Reactions: Split Like a Maiden Encore 🤘📱

Naturally, the fanbase is split like the twin guitars of Murray and Smith.

  • Team Rod: “Tidy! About time someone said it. If you want a video, buy the Blu-ray.”
  • Team Phone: “I paid £100 for this ticket. I’ll record if I want.”

The debate’s been raging across forums and socials all week. Some fans reckon the band’s being heavy-handed. Others argue that you don’t go to a Maiden show to hold your phone — you go to get lost in The Number of the Beast.

One fan summed it up perfectly: “I didn’t wait 20 years for ‘Alexander the Great’ live just to watch it through some daft lad’s screen in front of me.”

The Bigger Picture: Rock vs. Screens 📸

This isn’t just a Maiden problem. It’s a rock-wide phenomenon.

  • Jack White has banned phones outright, using Yondr pouches so you can’t get them out.
  • Tool famously stop mid-song to scold screen-holders.
  • Adele once snapped at a fan: “You’re here, in real life!”

It’s the eternal clash: old-school live energy vs. modern “pics or it didn’t happen” culture. Rod’s statement just pours more petrol on the fire.

So What Happens Next? 🔮

Will Maiden start using Yondr pouches? Will Bruce personally karate-kick iPhones into the crowd? Or will fans finally learn to keep their devices in their pockets and their fists in the air?

Knowing Rod, he’ll double down. He’s never been one to mince words. And knowing Maiden, they’ll carry on preaching the gospel of the phone-free gig. Because if anyone’s earned the right to dictate how their shows are enjoyed, it’s the lads who gave us Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, and 50 years of pure metal mayhem.

The Riff Report Verdict 🎸🍻

Here’s where we stand, mun:

  • If you’re one of the “selfish few” filming — sort yourself out, butt! Go home and watch YouTube.
  • If you’re in Team Rod — raise a pint. Maiden are preserving the gig for what it’s meant to be: a communal, sweaty, life-affirming blast of heavy metal thunder.
  • And if you’re undecided — ask yourself this: when Bruce screams “Scream for me, Cardiff!” do you really want your phone in your hand, or do you want both arms in the air, lungs bursting, joining 70,000 others in one massive roar?

That’s the magic. That’s what Rod’s protecting. And fair play, mun — proper job. 🤘🔥

Final Thoughts

Rod Smallwood’s tirade is classic Maiden management: tough love, no apologies, and always in service of the band’s vision. Whether you agree with him or not, you can’t deny the passion.

So next time Eddie lumbers onstage, remember Rod’s words. Pocket the phone. Live the gig. And scream like your life depends on it.

Because one day, when the amps are quiet and the lights go down, you’ll be glad your memories are in your heart — not in your camera roll. 🏴

Up the Irons! ⚔️📵

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
