Game of Thrones to Stranger Things: Why Do So Many TV Shows Bottle the Finale? 🤯📺🔥

There’s nothing more brutal than investing years of your life into a TV show, defending it in pubs, arguing about it online at stupid o’clock, buying merch you absolutely didn’t need… only for the finale to rock up and absolutely faceplant.

The so-called Golden Age of Television gave us massive budgets, sprawling worlds, and characters we lived and breathed with. But it also gave us a new kind of heartbreak: the bad ending.

From Game of Thrones to Stranger Things, the graveyard of controversial finales is packed tighter than a festival beer queue at 11pm.

So what’s going on? Why do so many shows smash the first 90 percent… then wobble at the finish line like a guitarist tripping over a monitor wedge?

Let’s get into it, mun. 🧐🤘

The Ending Is the Hardest Riff to Write 🎸

Anyone can start strong. Pilots get months of love, rewrites, test audiences, and exec notes. Endings? They usually arrive under pressure, tight deadlines, and a fanbase screaming “DON’T YOU DARE MESS THIS UP” from every corner of the internet.

A finale has to:

  • Wrap multiple character arcs
  • Answer long-running mysteries
  • Deliver emotional payoff
  • Surprise viewers without betraying logic

That’s not storytelling. That’s juggling flaming guitars while the stage is on fire.

Game of Thrones: When Speed Killed the Song 🐉🪑

Let’s not pretend we’re not still emotionally bruised.

Game of Thrones spent years building slow-burn politics, moral grey areas, and deeply layered characters. Then the final season arrived like it was late for last orders.

Everything felt rushed. Character choices came out of nowhere. Years of careful groundwork were bulldozed in favour of shock moments and spectacle. The Iron Throne melted, and so did a lot of goodwill.

It wasn’t just what happened that annoyed fans.
It was how quickly it happened.

That’s like skipping the verse and bridge and jumping straight into a solo you haven’t earned. Painful stuff.

Stranger Things: Vibes vs the Finish Line 🧇⚡

Stranger Things has a different challenge. It didn’t crash. It just… kept getting bigger.

What began as a tight, spooky sci-fi mystery grew into a global monster. Longer episodes. Bigger threats. Louder emotions. But with every season, the question got louder too:

How do you actually end a show built on nostalgia and vibes?

The series thrives on friendship, atmosphere, and 80s magic. Endings demand finality. Consequences. Tough calls. Fans are already nervous that the last chapter could drown in fan service or stretch itself into a gentle fade-out instead of a bold full stop.

It’s the difference between fading away… and smashing the final chord.

Too Big to End Properly 💰

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: modern TV finales aren’t just creative moments. They’re business decisions.

Studios worry about:

  • Spin-offs
  • Future franchises
  • Keeping characters “usable”
  • Not upsetting chunks of the audience

So instead of brave endings, we get cautious ones. Nobody really changes. Nobody truly pays the price. Doors are left suspiciously open.

It’s the TV equivalent of refusing to end a gig because merch sales are still flying.

Fan Theories Changed Everything 🧠📱

The internet has made endings even harder.

Reddit threads, YouTube breakdowns, TikTok theories… fans now analyse shows harder than prog heads dissect a concept album. Sometimes the audience invents endings so clever that nothing official can compete.

Creators are left choosing between:

  • Sticking to the plan and being called predictable
  • Swerving hard and being accused of ruining everything

Either way, someone’s writing a furious thread.

So… Can a Show Ever Nail the Finale? 🏁

Absolutely. But it takes backbone.

The best endings:

  • Stay true to character
  • Take their time
  • Accept that not everyone will be happy
  • Commit fully to the story they’re telling

Great finales don’t try to please everyone. They try to be honest.

Final Thoughts from the Riff Pit 🤘

Bad endings hurt more than bad beginnings because they mess with our memories. They rewrite how we feel about everything that came before.

But when a show does stick the landing?
That final episode becomes legendary. Rewatchable. Timeless.

Here’s hoping the next big finale doesn’t shuffle quietly offstage… but goes out like a headliner smashing the last chord, amps ringing, crowd roaring, lights blazing.

Over to you, butt 👇
Which TV finale broke your heart… and which one absolutely nailed it?

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
