THE RIFFMASTER HAS RETURNED! 🎸💀🔥

More than five decades after helping create the foundations of heavy metal, Tony Iommi is back with an album that celebrates everything fans love about his unmistakable guitar playing.

And this isn’t simply another collection of recordings from the BLACK SABBATH archives.

From The Dark is a completely new studio album featuring original material, powerful collaborations and the unmistakably heavy sound that made Iommi one of the most influential guitarists in rock history.

To celebrate its release, the Birmingham-born musician has unveiled an official lyric video for Over The Violent Sun, the album’s opening track.

The song introduces listeners to a powerful combination of down-tuned guitar riffs, thunderous rhythms and the extraordinary vocal range of Norwegian metal singer Jorn Lande.

For longtime fans of BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL and Iommi’s previous solo recordings, there’s plenty to get excited about.

Twenty-one years since his last full-length solo album, Tony Iommi has delivered eight brand-new tracks of heavy metal!

🎥 WATCH: TONY IOMMI – ‘OVER THE VIOLENT SUN’ Official Lyric Video!

The official lyric video was released on Friday 23 October 2026, the same day as From The Dark.

Created with visual production by Andy Pilkington, the video accompanies the album’s opening track, giving fans the opportunity to follow the lyrics while experiencing the full power of Iommi’s latest recording.

The song begins with a dark, threatening guitar riff before building into a powerful metal arrangement.

Jorn Lande’s commanding vocals provide the perfect contrast to Iommi’s unmistakable guitar tone, while the rhythm section delivers enormous musical weight.

It’s a dramatic opening to an album that has been more than two decades in the making.

And if you were wondering whether the man responsible for creating some of heavy metal’s greatest riffs has lost any of his magic, this new release offers a pretty convincing answer.

Absolutely not!

💿 ‘FROM THE DARK’ – TONY IOMMI’s First Solo Album In 21 Years!

Released through BMG, From The Dark is Iommi’s first full-length solo album since Fused arrived in 2005.

That earlier record featured former DEEP PURPLE and BLACK SABBATH vocalist Glenn Hughes and remains a favourite among fans of Iommi’s heavier solo material.

Now, more than two decades later, the legendary guitarist has returned with another extraordinary musical partnership.

This time, he has recruited Norwegian vocalist Jorn Lande to handle lead vocals throughout the album.

The pair are joined by a powerful rhythm section featuring Becky Baldwin on bass and Karl Brazil on drums.

Production was handled by Iommi alongside his longtime collaborator Mike Exeter, who has worked with the guitarist for approximately three decades.

The result is a record rooted in traditional heavy metal but featuring modern production and musicianship.

🔥 ‘OVER THE VIOLENT SUN’ – Classic IOMMI Riffs Meet Powerful Modern Metal!

As the opening track on From The Dark, Over The Violent Sun has an important job.

It needs to establish the musical identity of the album.

And from its opening moments, the recording makes one thing clear.

Tony Iommi still knows exactly how to write a crushing heavy metal riff!

The song opens with the dark, down-tuned guitar sound that helped establish BLACK SABBATH as pioneers of heavy music.

But rather than remaining locked into one repetitive arrangement, the composition develops through several contrasting musical passages.

The rhythm section introduces considerable power, creating a foundation for Iommi’s guitar work.

Jorn Lande’s vocals add another dimension.

His delivery combines the raw intensity of traditional heavy metal with soaring melodic passages.

For fans familiar with his previous recordings, it’s a distinctive performance that feels particularly well suited to Iommi’s musical approach.

The track also demonstrates the guitarist’s ability to balance heaviness with atmosphere.

It’s something he has been doing since the earliest BLACK SABBATH recordings.

And more than half a century later, that musical instinct remains an essential part of his identity.

🎤 JORN LANDE – The Powerful Voice Behind ‘FROM THE DARK’

One of the most exciting aspects of the album is the involvement of Jorn Lande.

The Norwegian vocalist has enjoyed an extensive career within hard rock, heavy metal and power metal.

His work includes performances with MASTERPLAN, ARK, BEYOND TWILIGHT and his solo project JORN.

Lande has become widely respected for his powerful voice, combining influences from classic hard rock with a commanding modern metal delivery.

For fans of legendary vocalists such as Ronnie James Dio and David Coverdale, his style will feel particularly familiar.

And that connection is no coincidence.

Iommi has revealed that he previously worked with Lande during a tribute concert honouring the late Ronnie James Dio.

The performance took place in London, bringing together musicians who had worked with or admired the legendary singer.

Lande performed several BLACK SABBATH songs at the event, leaving a lasting impression on Iommi.

When the guitarist began considering potential singers for his next solo album, Lande’s voice immediately came to mind.

Iommi explained:

“I like Jorn’s voice. He’s a nice guy as well — good to get on with.”

For Iommi, finding the right vocalist was essential.

His guitar riffs require a singer capable of delivering tremendous power while maintaining musical sensitivity.

And Lande’s style appeared to provide exactly that combination.

🎸 TONY IOMMI Originally Planned An Instrumental Album!

Interestingly, From The Dark didn’t begin life as a conventional heavy metal album featuring a singer.

Iommi originally intended to record an entirely instrumental project.

Speaking during a recent interview with Philadelphia radio station 93.3 WMMR, he revealed that he had already written several pieces of music before changing direction.

The guitarist had completed approximately four or five instrumental tracks.

However, as the project developed, he began to reconsider.

He realised that he wanted to work with a vocalist.

Rather than simply adding singing to the existing instrumental recordings, Iommi decided to start developing new ideas specifically designed around vocals.

Those sessions gradually evolved into From The Dark.

The instrumental recordings were put aside, leaving open the possibility that the guitarist could revisit them in the future.

For fans who have always wanted another instrumental Iommi project, that’s an interesting prospect.

But for this album, the musician wanted the creative interaction that comes from working with a powerful singer.

🖤 NO DEADLINES, NO PRESSURE – IOMMI Took His Time Recording The Album

One of the biggest differences between From The Dark and Iommi’s previous recordings was the relaxed approach to its creation.

Throughout his career with BLACK SABBATH, recording albums often involved demanding schedules.

Songs needed to be written.

Studio sessions had to be completed.

And international tours frequently followed.

This time, there was no such pressure.

Iommi was able to work in his own recording studio at home, developing ideas whenever inspiration arrived.

He explained that he and producer Mike Exeter would often reserve Mondays and Tuesdays for recording sessions.

If either musician had other commitments, they would simply rearrange their schedule.

That freedom allowed the guitarist to experiment and revisit musical ideas without worrying about an approaching deadline.

As Iommi explained:

“In this case, there’s no pressure. I’ve been able to do it when I want.”

It’s an interesting approach for someone who has spent much of his life working within the demanding schedules of a world-famous rock band.

And judging by the finished material, the extra creative freedom has allowed him to explore some powerful musical territory.

🥁 BECKY BALDWIN And KARL BRAZIL Complete The Lineup!

Alongside Tony Iommi and Jorn Lande, From The Dark features two accomplished musicians providing the album’s rhythmic foundation.

🎸 BECKY BALDWIN – Bass Guitar

British bassist Becky Baldwin is well known for her work with Danish heavy metal legends MERCYFUL FATE.

She has also performed with British metal band FURY and developed a reputation as an accomplished live and session musician.

Her powerful bass playing provides an essential foundation beneath Iommi’s guitar arrangements.

For fans of traditional heavy metal, her involvement is particularly exciting.

Iommi’s music has always relied heavily on the relationship between guitar and bass.

During BLACK SABBATH’s classic years, his partnership with Geezer Butler helped create some of the most influential low-end arrangements in rock history.

Baldwin brings her own style to the new recordings while supporting the guitarist’s unmistakable sound.

🥁 KARL BRAZIL – Drums

The album also features experienced drummer Karl Brazil.

Brazil has worked with numerous internationally established musicians, including Robbie Williams, James Blunt and FEEDER.

His professional experience covers a wide variety of musical styles.

On From The Dark, he provides the power and precision required to support Iommi’s heavy guitar arrangements.

His performances combine strong rhythmic foundations with dynamic accents, helping the songs develop naturally.

Together, Baldwin and Brazil form a powerful rhythm section capable of delivering both crushing heaviness and more melodic passages.

👑 QUEEN’s BRIAN MAY Makes A Special Guest Appearance!

As if a brand-new Tony Iommi album wasn’t exciting enough, From The Dark also features an appearance from another legendary British guitarist.

Brian May of QUEEN contributes a guest guitar solo to the track ‘Death Wake’.

The collaboration brings together two of the most recognisable guitar players in British rock history.

Both musicians helped establish distinctive sounds that influenced generations of guitarists.

Iommi’s dark, down-tuned riffs became the foundations of heavy metal.

May’s melodic guitar arrangements, layered harmonies and instantly recognisable tone helped define QUEEN’s extraordinary catalogue.

Although their musical styles are very different, the two musicians have maintained a longstanding friendship.

Their collaboration on Death Wake provides an opportunity to hear those distinctive approaches together.

For fans of classic British rock, the combination is particularly appealing.

Two legendary guitarists. Two unmistakable sounds. One powerful new heavy metal recording!

⚡ ‘WORLD ALONE’ Introduced Fans To IOMMI’s New Sound!

The first single from From The Dark was World Alone, released on 29 July 2026.

The track provided fans with their first substantial preview of Iommi’s new musical project.

Featuring powerful guitar riffs and Jorn Lande’s commanding vocals, the recording immediately demonstrated the chemistry between the musicians.

Its accompanying video presented a futuristic dystopian world.

The storyline centred around a character known as The Believer, who becomes trapped inside a dangerous video-game environment.

The unusual visual concept offered a different approach from the traditional gothic imagery often associated with Iommi’s music.

But beneath the futuristic visuals was the same unmistakably heavy guitar sound that fans have loved for decades.

The single’s release also marked an important occasion in Birmingham.

Its premiere was celebrated during a special event near the famous BLACK SABBATH Bridge, acknowledging Iommi’s connection to the city where heavy metal was born.

🌩️ ‘STORMWATCHER’ Continued The Build-Up!

Following the arrival of World Alone, Iommi unveiled Stormwatcher in September 2026.

The track provided another preview of the album’s darker musical atmosphere.

Its powerful arrangements demonstrated the versatility of the musicians involved.

Where World Alone introduced listeners to the project’s more direct heavy metal approach, Stormwatcher explored another dimension of the album’s sound.

Together, the two singles helped generate anticipation ahead of the full release.

And now, with Over The Violent Sun receiving its own official lyric video, fans can experience how those recordings fit together within the complete album.

🎸 TONY IOMMI – The Guitarist Who Helped Invent Heavy Metal!

It’s impossible to discuss Tony Iommi’s latest album without acknowledging his extraordinary influence on heavy music.

Born in Birmingham in 1948, Iommi became one of the founding members of BLACK SABBATH alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward.

During the late 1960s, the musicians began developing a darker and heavier sound than much of the rock music being created at the time.

Iommi’s distinctive guitar riffs became central to that transformation.

Songs such as Black Sabbath, N.I.B., Iron Man, War Pigs and Children Of The Grave helped establish the foundations of an entirely new musical movement.

His playing was shaped partly by a serious industrial accident during his younger years.

While working in a factory, Iommi lost the tips of two fingers on his right hand.

As a left-handed guitarist, the injury affected his fretting hand.

Rather than abandoning music, he adapted his technique using homemade fingertip protectors and lighter guitar strings.

He also experimented with lower guitar tunings, helping develop the dark, heavy sound that became associated with BLACK SABBATH.

Those innovations would influence countless metal musicians.

And more than 50 years later, the impact of his guitar playing can still be heard throughout traditional heavy metal, doom metal, stoner rock and modern extreme metal.

🖤 ‘FROM THE DARK’ Arrives During An Emotional Period For BLACK SABBATH Fans

The release also comes during an important and emotional period for BLACK SABBATH’s legacy.

On 5 July 2025, the band’s original lineup reunited for one final performance at Birmingham’s Villa Park.

The historic Back To The Beginning concert brought together some of the biggest names in rock and metal to celebrate the extraordinary influence of BLACK SABBATH and Ozzy Osbourne.

For Iommi, the evening represented an opportunity to perform alongside his original bandmates one final time.

Just 17 days later, Ozzy died at the age of 76.

His death marked the end of one of the most influential musical partnerships in heavy metal history.

Iommi has spoken openly about the difficulty of adjusting to life without his longtime friend and bandmate.

However, he has also continued creating music.

And while From The Dark was developed over a number of years, its release now represents an important new chapter in his extraordinary career.

Rather than concentrating exclusively on the past, the guitarist is continuing to explore new musical possibilities.

And with Jorn Lande, Becky Baldwin, Karl Brazil and Brian May involved, he has surrounded himself with accomplished musicians who share his passion for powerful rock music.

🐉 A Proud Moment For British Heavy Metal!

His influence can be heard across generations of musicians, including bands from right here in Wales.

From traditional metal to modern alternative and extreme music, the foundations established by BLACK SABBATH continue to inspire new artists.

And that’s what makes From The Dark particularly exciting.

This isn’t simply a legendary guitarist revisiting old material.

It’s the man who helped invent heavy metal continuing to create new riffs in 2026.

That’s something worth celebrating.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT – THE RIFFMASTER STILL REIGNS SUPREME!

Tony Iommi releasing From The Dark after 21 years is one of the most significant events in heavy metal music during 2026.

Few guitarists have left such an enormous mark on rock history.

His unmistakable riffs helped create the sound of heavy metal.

His musical innovations inspired generations of guitarists.

And his work with BLACK SABBATH remains essential listening for anyone who appreciates powerful guitar-driven music.

But From The Dark demonstrates that Iommi’s creative journey is far from finished.

Rather than relying on nostalgia, he has assembled a powerful collection of musicians and developed a completely new album.

Jorn Lande provides the commanding vocals.

Becky Baldwin delivers the crushing bass arrangements.

Karl Brazil adds thunderous percussion.

Brian May contributes a special guest guitar appearance.

And at the centre of everything is Tony Iommi himself.

The newly released lyric video for Over The Violent Sun provides an excellent introduction to the record’s dark, heavy atmosphere.

Its powerful guitar riffs and dramatic arrangements remind listeners why Iommi remains such an influential figure.

And with the album finally available after more than two decades, fans can enjoy an entirely new chapter in his remarkable musical legacy.

Twenty-one years since his last full-length solo album. Eight new songs. One legendary guitarist.

And those unmistakable guitar riffs?

They’re still as heavy as ever!

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
