JACK OSBOURNE has addressed the controversy surrounding his family’s plans to create an artificial intelligence-powered avatar of his late father, OZZY OSBOURNE, admitting that he takes responsibility for the negative reaction from fans. The project, which aims to recreate the Prince of Darkness as an interactive digital figure capable of speaking and responding in his own voice, has divided the rock and metal community. But Jack insists the technology is about protecting his father’s legacy rather than simply bringing a computer-generated version of the legendary BLACK SABBATH frontman back into the spotlight.

The Prince of Darkness may have taken his final bow, but his family are determined to ensure that his extraordinary legacy continues for generations to come. 🖤

Following the death of Ozzy Osbourne on 22 July 2025, the music world lost one of its most influential and recognisable personalities.

From helping create heavy metal with BLACK SABBATH to becoming an international solo superstar, Ozzy’s impact on music and popular culture was enormous.

However, when his family announced plans earlier this year to create an interactive AI version of the legendary singer, not everyone welcomed the news.

Some fans were fascinated by the technology.

Others questioned whether digitally recreating a deceased musician was appropriate.

And several expressed concerns about the potential commercial exploitation of Ozzy’s image.

Now, his son Jack Osbourne has admitted that the original announcement could have been handled considerably better.

🎤 “The Backlash, It Was My Own Fault” – JACK OSBOURNE Speaks Out

During an appearance on the Great Company With Jamie Laing podcast, released on Wednesday 21 October 2026, Jack discussed the criticism surrounding the project.

Rather than blaming fans for misunderstanding the family’s intentions, he acknowledged that his own explanation had been inadequate.

Jack admitted:

“The backlash, it was my own fault.”

He explained that the family had only recently settled on their plans when the announcement was made.

As a result, he felt unprepared to explain exactly what the technology involved and how it would be used.

According to Jack, some people immediately imagined Ozzy’s digital likeness appearing in commercial advertisements and endorsing products.

That interpretation, he suggested, was very different from what the family intended.

The 40-year-old television personality acknowledged that the announcement had created understandable concerns.

But he believes some of that reaction came from a misunderstanding of the project’s purpose.

And that’s something he now accepts responsibility for.

💀 What Exactly Is The OZZY OSBOURNE AI Avatar?

The controversial project was first announced in May 2026, when Sharon and Jack Osbourne revealed plans to create a digital recreation of the legendary musician.

The family have partnered with two specialist technology companies:

  • HYPERREAL – A digital-human technology company developing authenticated virtual representations of real people.
  • PROTO HOLOGRAM – A company specialising in life-sized holographic-style displays and interactive digital experiences.

Together, the companies are developing an AI-powered version of Ozzy that can appear to speak, move and respond to questions.

The avatar is intended to use Ozzy’s recognisable appearance, voice and personality.

Unlike traditional hologram performances, which generally involve pre-recorded sequences, the planned system is designed to support interactive conversations.

That means fans could potentially approach a display, ask questions and receive responses delivered in a recreation of Ozzy’s voice.

It is an ambitious technological project.

But it also raises difficult questions about how far artificial intelligence should go when recreating musicians who are no longer alive.

🤘 “This Isn’t Just ChatGPT With My Dad’s Face On It”

One of Jack’s biggest frustrations has been the suggestion that the project involves simply attaching his father’s appearance to an ordinary chatbot.

He has repeatedly rejected that description.

During a previous episode of The Osbournes podcast, Jack explained that the family intends to use a closed AI system rather than a general-purpose chatbot connected to the internet.

According to Jack, the system’s responses will be drawn from a controlled collection of material associated with Ozzy.

That could include authentic interviews, recorded comments and other approved information about his life.

The idea is to restrict the system to material connected to Ozzy rather than allowing it to invent answers freely about unrelated subjects.

Jack has emphasised that the family wants the digital representation to remain faithful to his father’s personality.

However, even a carefully controlled AI system cannot genuinely reproduce a person’s thoughts or intentions.

It can only generate responses based on information and design choices supplied to it.

That distinction is important.

The digital Ozzy would be a technological recreation of the musician, not Ozzy himself.

🎸 JACK OSBOURNE Says The Family Want To Protect Ozzy’s Digital Identity

During the Jamie Laing interview, Jack explained that a major motivation behind the project involves protecting his father’s image and intellectual property.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly sophisticated, recreating the appearance or voice of a famous individual is becoming easier.

For musicians and their families, this introduces new challenges involving digital ownership and unauthorised impersonation.

Jack believes creating an officially controlled digital representation will help the family maintain authority over how Ozzy’s likeness is used.

He compared the concept to owning photographs, recordings and other intellectual property associated with his father.

Rather than allowing unauthorised digital reproductions to emerge, the family want to establish an approved version that they can control.

It is a significant part of Jack’s argument.

He believes artificial intelligence will become an increasingly common part of the entertainment industry.

And rather than reacting after the technology becomes widespread, he wants the Osbourne family to be involved in shaping how it is used.

Of course, creating an official avatar does not automatically prevent unauthorised AI recreations.

But Jack sees the project as a way of establishing a family-approved digital representation of Ozzy’s identity.

🖤 SHARON OSBOURNE Defends The Project Against ‘Cash Grab’ Accusations

Jack isn’t the only member of the Osbourne family who has responded to criticism.

Sharon Osbourne has also spoken passionately about the project.

During a June 2026 episode of The Osbournes podcast, Sharon rejected accusations that the family were exploiting Ozzy’s memory for financial gain.

She argued that the project was about preserving her husband’s legacy through emerging technology.

Sharon also insisted that the family would maintain control over the digital representation and how it was used.

The former music manager has spent decades protecting and developing Ozzy’s career.

From his early days with BLACK SABBATH to his enormous solo success, Sharon played a central role in transforming him into an international entertainment figure.

She believes new technology provides opportunities to introduce his personality and music to future generations.

Her position is that creating a carefully managed digital avatar can be another form of preserving an artist’s cultural legacy.

However, not every fan agrees with that interpretation.

And the controversy has continued despite the family’s explanations.

🔥 Why Are Some OZZY OSBOURNE Fans Against The AI Avatar?

The announcement has generated considerable debate among rock and metal fans.

For some, the idea of interacting with a digital recreation of Ozzy is fascinating.

For others, it raises uncomfortable questions about authenticity, consent and respect.

There are several concerns worth considering.

💀 Can Artificial Intelligence Really Recreate A Personality?

Ozzy Osbourne was famous for his unpredictable humour, distinctive speech and extraordinary personality.

His interviews frequently produced unexpected moments that became part of rock folklore.

Although artificial intelligence can imitate speech patterns and draw on recorded information, it cannot recreate the real experiences, awareness or spontaneity of a living person.

That means even a highly sophisticated digital avatar would remain a simulation.

Some fans worry that audiences could begin treating AI-generated responses as though they were genuinely Ozzy’s opinions.

🎸 What About Ozzy’s Wishes?

Another important question concerns whether Ozzy would have approved of the project.

Jack has previously said that he discussed similar technology with his father before Ozzy died.

According to Jack, he believes his father would have supported the idea.

Ozzy also expressed an interest in the possibilities of artificial intelligence during a 2023 podcast discussion.

However, those comments do not establish approval of every possible future application of the technology.

For fans, that distinction matters.

There is a difference between being interested in AI and agreeing to a particular digital recreation.

💰 Could Ozzy’s Image Be Used Commercially?

The possibility of commercial exploitation has been another major concern.

Some fans fear that a digital Ozzy could eventually appear in advertisements, promotional campaigns or other activities that might not reflect his personality.

Jack has pushed back against the suggestion that this is the family’s primary intention.

Nevertheless, the issue illustrates why clear rules and transparency will be essential.

For a musician whose identity was built around rebelliousness and individuality, fans understandably want reassurance that his image will be treated respectfully.

📺 Where Will Fans Be Able To See The Digital OZZY?

The planned digital avatar is expected to appear through specialist Proto Luma display units.

These systems are designed to present life-sized digital figures, creating the impression that a person is appearing in front of the viewer.

The units can incorporate interactive technology, allowing visitors to engage with the digital presentation.

The Osbourne family have discussed plans to introduce the experience in both the United Kingdom and United States.

However, as of 24 October 2026, a complete list of confirmed public locations, opening dates and ticket prices has not been announced.

Fans should therefore be cautious about assuming that the experience is already available to visit.

The technology has been demonstrated through other digital-human projects, but Ozzy’s avatar remains an announced development rather than an established touring attraction.

🎤 JACK OSBOURNE Says Ozzy’s Legacy Is The Real Motivation

Throughout the controversy, Jack has repeatedly returned to one central argument.

He wants future generations to know who his father was.

For decades, Ozzy Osbourne was one of the most recognisable personalities in music.

His influence extended far beyond heavy metal.

He became a television personality, a cultural icon and a familiar figure to audiences who might never have listened to a BLACK SABBATH album.

But Jack is conscious that younger generations will grow up without experiencing Ozzy as a living performer.

He believes interactive technology could introduce them to his father’s humour, personality and extraordinary life.

Whether an AI avatar is the best way to achieve that remains open to debate.

After all, Ozzy’s existing recordings, interviews, concerts and documentaries already provide an enormous archive of authentic material.

But for Jack, the new project represents another way of connecting that history with audiences.

And as Ozzy’s son, preserving those memories clearly carries considerable personal significance.

🖤 Remembering OZZY OSBOURNE – The Prince Of Darkness

Born John Michael Osbourne on 3 December 1948 in Birmingham, Ozzy became one of the founding fathers of heavy metal.

As the original vocalist of BLACK SABBATH, he helped create a sound that transformed rock music.

Together with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, Ozzy recorded some of the most influential albums in metal history.

Songs such as Black Sabbath, War Pigs, Iron Man, Paranoid and Children Of The Grave helped establish the foundations of an entirely new musical movement.

After leaving the band in 1979, Ozzy launched an enormously successful solo career.

His recordings with guitarists including Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde introduced new generations to his unmistakable voice.

Albums such as Blizzard Of Ozz, Diary Of A Madman, Bark At The Moon and No More Tears became essential parts of heavy metal history.

Songs including Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley, Mama, I’m Coming Home and No More Tears remain among the genre’s most celebrated recordings.

Ozzy also expanded his influence through the reality television programme The Osbournes, which introduced his family to an international audience.

And through Ozzfest, he helped provide important opportunities for countless established and emerging metal bands.

His contribution to the development of heavy music is impossible to overstate.

🏟️ OZZY’s Final Concert Was A Historic Birmingham Homecoming

One of the most emotional moments in Ozzy’s final years came on 5 July 2025.

That evening, the legendary singer returned to his hometown of Birmingham for the historic Back To The Beginning concert at Villa Park.

The event brought together some of the biggest names in heavy metal to celebrate Ozzy and BLACK SABBATH’s extraordinary influence.

Artists including METALLICA, GUNS N’ ROSES, SLAYER, TOOL and PANTERA participated in the celebrations.

Ozzy performed a short solo set before reuniting with his original BLACK SABBATH bandmates.

The reunion featured:

  • Tony Iommi – Guitar
  • Geezer Butler – Bass
  • Bill Ward – Drums
  • Ozzy Osbourne – Vocals

Together, they performed War Pigs, N.I.B., Iron Man and Paranoid.

For the thousands of fans in attendance, it was an unforgettable celebration of heavy metal history.

Just 17 days later, Ozzy died at the age of 76.

His final performance therefore became an extraordinarily poignant farewell.

And unlike a computer-generated recreation, those moments represent authentic recordings of the musician performing alongside his lifelong collaborators.

For many fans, that is an irreplaceable part of his legacy.

🎶 AI And Rock Music – An Increasingly Important Debate

The controversy surrounding Ozzy’s avatar reflects a wider conversation taking place throughout the entertainment industry.

Artificial intelligence is changing how music, images, voices and performances can be created.

For record labels, artists and their estates, the technology offers new opportunities but also raises serious ethical questions.

AI can potentially help restore historic recordings, organise archives and create educational experiences.

However, it can also be used to imitate performers without permission or generate material that audiences might incorrectly believe is authentic.

The music industry has already seen debates about holographic performances, digitally reconstructed voices and posthumous releases.

Projects involving artists such as ABBA, Roy Orbison and Tupac Shakur have demonstrated different approaches to bringing performers into digital environments.

However, there are important differences between those experiences.

A pre-recorded performance, a digitally animated character and an interactive AI system that generates new responses are not the same thing.

Ozzy’s proposed avatar belongs to the most controversial category because it is intended to respond conversationally as the late musician.

That introduces additional questions about how generated statements will be distinguished from things Ozzy genuinely said during his lifetime.

For the project to gain wider acceptance, the family and technology companies may need to demonstrate exactly how those safeguards work.

🤘 Could The Digital OZZY Introduce Heavy Metal To New Generations?

Despite the criticism, supporters of the project believe it could provide an unusual introduction to Ozzy’s musical legacy.

Imagine a younger fan discovering BLACK SABBATH for the first time.

Rather than simply watching an interview or reading a biography, they could interact with a digital presentation designed to explain Ozzy’s career.

The technology might be used to discuss his early years in Birmingham, the development of BLACK SABBATH or his experiences working with legendary guitarists.

It could also direct people towards authentic recordings and historical material.

In that context, the avatar might function as an interactive archive rather than a replacement for the musician.

However, much will depend on how the project is ultimately presented.

Clear explanations about which responses are based on genuine quotations, which are AI-generated and how the system is controlled would help audiences understand the experience.

And with Ozzy’s family directly involved, they have an opportunity to establish those boundaries before the project becomes publicly available.

🐉 OZZY’s Legacy Will Always Have A Special Place In British Heavy Metal

For fans here in the United Kingdom, Ozzy Osbourne’s legacy carries particular significance.

BLACK SABBATH emerged from Birmingham during the late 1960s, helping establish a musical genre that would spread across the world.

Their influence can be heard in generations of British bands, from traditional heavy metal pioneers to modern metalcore and doom metal artists.

For Welsh rock and metal fans, that influence is particularly familiar.

Artists such as BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, SKINDRED and countless emerging Welsh bands are part of a musical landscape shaped by the foundations BLACK SABBATH helped create.

Ozzy’s contribution to British music will continue to be celebrated regardless of whether his digital avatar proves successful.

His recordings already form an essential part of rock history.

And the extraordinary response to Back To The Beginning demonstrated just how deeply he was loved by fans around the world.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT – Can AI Preserve OZZY’s Legacy Without Replacing The Legend?

Jack Osbourne’s admission that he mishandled the original announcement is an important development in the debate surrounding his father’s AI avatar.

Rather than dismissing fans’ concerns, he has acknowledged that the project was not clearly explained.

That matters.

Because there are legitimate questions surrounding the use of artificial intelligence to recreate a deceased musician.

For some people, an officially approved digital Ozzy could provide an exciting way to explore the life of one of heavy metal’s greatest personalities.

For others, the idea of a computer-generated version of the Prince of Darkness having conversations with fans will always feel uncomfortable.

Both reactions deserve to be taken seriously.

The Osbourne family clearly view the project as an opportunity to protect and preserve Ozzy’s identity.

However, its success will ultimately depend on how respectfully and transparently the technology is used.

Ozzy Osbourne was never an ordinary rock star.

He was unpredictable, hilarious, rebellious, occasionally outrageous and completely unmistakable.

His personality was as important to his success as his music.

And while artificial intelligence may be able to recreate his appearance and voice, there will only ever be one real Prince of Darkness.

The man who helped create heavy metal in Birmingham.

The singer who gave us Crazy Train, Paranoid and Mr. Crowley.

The performer who returned home for one final extraordinary concert.

Technology can preserve memories.

It can recreate appearances.

It can even simulate conversations.

But it cannot replace the man himself.

Whatever happens with the AI avatar, Ozzy Osbourne’s music and influence will continue long into the future.

ONE LEGEND. ONE EXTRAORDINARY LEGACY. AND A TECHNOLOGICAL PROJECT THAT HAS DIVIDED THE METAL WORLD!

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
