One of underground heavy musicโ€™s most influential, adventurous and occasionally chaotic record labels is finally getting the book it deserves, with Decibel Books announcing Deconstructing Towers: The Story Of Hydra Head Records โ€” a mammoth 500-plus-page history of Aaron Turnerโ€™s fiercely independent label and the extraordinary artists who passed through its doors.

This could be dangerous for the bookshelf.

Hydra Head Records was never simply another metal label.

It was a place where hardcore collided with experimental music.

Where doom got stranger.

Where metal became artier.

Where noise became heavier.

Where beautiful packaging occasionally appeared to have been designed by people who considered โ€œeasy to manufactureโ€ a personal insult.

And now its sprawling, messy, hugely influential history is being properly documented.

Deconstructing Towers: The Story Of Hydra Head Records is coming from Decibel Books, written by longtime music journalist and Great Falls bassist Shane Mehling.

And judging by the size of the thing?

You may require reinforced furniture.

๐Ÿ“– More Than 500 Pages Of Hydra Head History

Decibel isnโ€™t exactly giving Hydra Head the quick paperback treatment.

Deconstructing Towers runs to more than 500 pages, alongside an additional 32-page full-colour section.

Inside will be a huge collection of rare and previously unpublished photographs, detailed accounts from musicians and former employees, and fresh artwork created especially for the book by Hydra Head founder Aaron Turner.

So this isnโ€™t simply somebody looking through old press releases and assembling a timeline.

The book has been built around the people who were actually there.

Artists.

Bandmates.

Employees.

Collaborators.

The people who helped make Hydra Head brilliant.

And, presumably, the people who occasionally wondered how the bloody thing was still functioning.

๐ŸŽจ Aaron Turner Has Created The Cover Artwork

It would have felt strange telling Hydra Headโ€™s story without Turner being involved visually.

Artwork was never an afterthought for the label.

Packaging became part of its identity.

Records werenโ€™t simply things containing music.

They were physical objects.

Things to stare at.

Handle.

Collect.

And occasionally attempt to work out how to fit back inside the original packaging after taking them out.

Turnerโ€™s new cover artwork for Deconstructing Towers keeps that philosophy connected directly to the book.

Very appropriate.

๐Ÿ Hydra Head Started Small โ€” Very Small

The story stretches back to 1993, when Aaron Turner began Hydra Head while still in high school.

Initially, it wasnโ€™t even a fully fledged record label.

It began as a distribution operation.

Turner later moved to Boston in 1995 to attend art school, becoming increasingly involved with the cityโ€™s underground hardcore and metal communities.

The first proper Hydra Head release followed when Turner received a demo from Vent, eventually putting out the bandโ€™s seven-inch.

Then another release happened.

Then another.

You know how these things go.

One minute youโ€™re putting out a seven-inch because you love a band.

Several years later youโ€™re running a label, worrying about pressing invoices and attempting to remember which musician somebody promised money to during a conversation outside a club six months earlier.

Rock โ€™nโ€™ roll.

โš™๏ธ Boston Became The Perfect Breeding Ground

Hydra Headโ€™s growth coincided with an incredibly fertile period for heavy and experimental music around Boston and the wider New England scene.

The label began working with bands that didnโ€™t always fit comfortably into established categories.

Hardcore?

Metal?

Post-metal?

Mathcore?

Noise?

Experimental?

Yes.

Hydra Headโ€™s greatest strength was arguably that it didnโ€™t seem particularly bothered about drawing neat boundaries between them.

If the music felt interesting enough, that was often more important than whether a record shop knew which section to file it under.

๐Ÿ”ฅ An Extraordinary Collection Of Bands

The book includes new interviews connected to an absolutely ridiculous collection of Hydra Head-associated artists, including:

  • ISIS
  • Cave In
  • Botch
  • Converge
  • Pelican
  • Torche
  • Jesu
  • Old Man Gloom
  • Xasthur
  • The Dillinger Escape Plan
  • Discordance Axis
  • Agoraphobic Nosebleed
  • Keelhaul
  • Khanate
  • Big Business
  • Daughters
  • Drowningman

And thatโ€™s still only part of the story.

For anyone who spent the late โ€™90s and 2000s disappearing down increasingly strange heavy-music rabbit holes, that list reads like somebody emptied an entire record collection onto the floor.

๐ŸŒŠ ISIS Became Central To The Labelโ€™s Identity

Naturally, ISIS occupy an enormous place in Hydra Head history.

Turner co-founded the band, and ISIS gradually became one of the most influential names in what would eventually be broadly described as post-metal.

Albums including Oceanic and Panopticon demonstrated that heavy music didnโ€™t have to operate around obvious verse-chorus structures or straightforward aggression.

Songs could build.

Repeat.

Expand.

Become enormous.

Then disappear into ambience before flattening you again ten minutes later.

A large chunk of modern atmospheric heavy music owes something to that approach.

Hydra Head provided a natural home for it.

๐Ÿš€ Cave In Nearly Became Something Enormous

One of the most fascinating sections of the book concerns Cave In.

The first preview from Deconstructing Towers goes back to the early 2000s, when Cave Inโ€™s landmark album Jupiter suddenly attracted major-label attention.

And not just casual interest.

There was effectively a bidding war around the band.

Thatโ€™s extraordinary when you consider Cave Inโ€™s roots.

They had emerged from metallic hardcore before expanding dramatically into psychedelic, progressive and alternative territory.

Jupiter sounded like a band refusing to obey the rules of its own scene.

Then the mainstream music business noticed.

Suddenly there were people talking about Cave In as a potential major breakthrough act.

๐ŸŽธ Imagine Cave In Becoming The Next Huge Alternative Band

Itโ€™s one of those great music-history sliding-door moments.

There was genuine belief around Hydra Head that Cave In could become massive.

Not underground massive.

Actually massive.

The kind of band appearing in magazines far outside hardcore.

The sort of success that could potentially transform not only Cave Inโ€™s lives but the financial situation of Hydra Head itself.

Because thatโ€™s another fascinating part of the bookโ€™s story.

The label might have looked creatively successful from outside.

Financially?

Things could be considerably more chaotic.

๐Ÿ’ธ Artistic Freedom And Financial Reality Do Not Always Get Along

Hydra Headโ€™s entire philosophy was built around creative freedom.

Wonderful for music.

Occasionally terrifying for accounting.

The label was committed to adventurous artists, expensive presentation and records that werenโ€™t necessarily designed to shift hundreds of thousands of copies.

That produced a remarkable catalogue.

It also produced some fairly serious business challenges.

Turner himself has described Hydra Head as a โ€œcomplicated, gratifying, frustrating and ultimately life-changing enterprise.โ€

That might be the perfect description.

This was a label driven by artistic belief rather than corporate strategy.

Which is romantic.

Right up until somebody sends the pressing bill.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ The Packaging Was Often As Ambitious As The Music

Hydra Head developed an instantly recognisable aesthetic.

Not because every record looked identical.

Quite the opposite.

The label treated album artwork and physical presentation as an extension of the music itself.

Special editions.

Unusual formats.

Carefully considered typography.

Distinctive photography.

Beautiful vinyl.

Strange packaging.

It helped create the feeling that buying a Hydra Head record meant getting an object, not simply acquiring the songs.

For collectors, this was glorious.

For whoever had to work out manufacturing costs?

Less glorious.

๐Ÿ’ฟ This Was Before Streaming Changed Everything

The period documented by Deconstructing Towers also captures a record industry going through massive upheaval.

Hydra Head grew during an era when underground labels relied heavily on physical media.

Vinyl.

CDs.

Mail order.

Independent record shops.

Distros.

Tour merchandise.

Then the internet transformed everything.

File sharing exploded.

Physical sales declined.

Digital music grew.

Streaming followed.

For giant record companies, that transition was difficult.

For independent labels already surviving on narrow margins?

It could be brutal.

๐Ÿค˜ Yet Hydra Headโ€™s Influence Kept Growing

The strange thing is that while the business became increasingly difficult, Hydra Headโ€™s cultural influence continued expanding.

The records mattered.

Musicians listened.

Other labels took notice.

Fans discovered increasingly experimental corners of heavy music through the Hydra Head logo.

You could pick up a record knowing almost nothing about the band and still think:

โ€œHydra Head put this out. Itโ€™s probably going to be interesting.โ€

Thatโ€™s incredibly valuable.

A great independent label becomes almost like a trusted curator.

You follow the label because you trust its taste.

๐Ÿ’€ Botch Helped Rewrite Heavy Music

Take Botch.

The Tacoma bandโ€™s fractured, violent, technically bewildering hardcore became enormously influential on generations of metalcore, mathcore and experimental hardcore acts.

We Are The Romans remains one of those records musicians continue discovering and immediately asking:

โ€œHang on, when was this made?โ€

Hydra Head understood that sort of music.

Not necessarily easy.

Not necessarily commercial.

But important.

๐ŸŒŒ Jesu, Pelican And The Expansion Of Heavy

Then there were artists such as Jesu and Pelican.

Bands and projects that showed heaviness could be beautiful, melancholy and atmospheric without losing impact.

That became another defining Hydra Head characteristic.

The label wasnโ€™t interested solely in speed or aggression.

Sometimes the heaviest music moved incredibly slowly.

Sometimes it barely resembled metal at all.

Yet somehow it still belonged.

๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ Noise, Drone And The Properly Strange Stuff

And Hydra Head could get considerably weirder.

Experimental electronics.

Noise.

Drone.

Industrial textures.

Dark ambient music.

Black metal.

Albums that sounded like machinery collapsing inside an abandoned warehouse.

The label also operated avenues for more experimental releases, reinforcing the idea that genre boundaries were suggestions rather than laws.

Some releases were inviting.

Others sounded like they actively disliked the listener.

We respect both approaches.

๐ŸŒด Eventually Hydra Head Moved West

After building its reputation around Boston, Hydra Head eventually relocated its operations to Los Angeles.

That marked another major period in the labelโ€™s development.

By then, Hydra Head was no longer some tiny teenage distribution experiment.

It had international recognition.

A substantial catalogue.

A roster of highly respected artists.

And considerably larger responsibilities.

The problem with growing?

Eventually thereโ€™s more to lose.

๐Ÿ’ฅ The Shutdown Was Brutally Honest

In 2012, Turner announced that Hydra Head would begin winding down its operations.

The reasons werenโ€™t dressed up in vague corporate language.

There were financial problems.

Debt.

Industry decline.

Personal difficulties.

And a fundamental imbalance between artistic ambition and economic reality.

Essentially, Hydra Head had spent years doing incredibly ambitious things without always building the sort of stable business infrastructure required to support them.

Which, frankly, makes the forthcoming book considerably more interesting.

Success stories are easy to romanticise.

Mess is more revealing.

๐Ÿ–ค It Was Never Really A Clean Ending

Hydra Headโ€™s shutdown didnโ€™t simply involve flicking a switch and disappearing.

The label continued managing its catalogue while dealing with debts, and occasional releases still appeared afterwards.

Eventually much of the operation faded away, with rights to various recordings returning to artists.

The organisation might no longer exist in the way it once did.

The influence absolutely does.

Thatโ€™s the important distinction.

๐Ÿ“– Shane Mehling Has Quite A Story To Untangle

And this is why author Shane Mehling has given himself one hell of a job.

This isnโ€™t the history of a straightforward record company where everybody remembers events the same way and all the paperwork sits neatly inside labelled filing cabinets.

Hydra Head seems to have operated through relationships, handshakes, friendships, enthusiasm and occasionally pure momentum.

Reconstructing that history requires talking to the people who lived it.

And perspectives will inevitably differ.

What felt exciting to one person might have felt terrifying to another.

What looked like creative freedom to an artist may have looked like organisational chaos from inside the office.

Thatโ€™s exactly what makes oral-history-style storytelling so fascinating.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Over 500 Pages Suddenly Doesnโ€™t Sound Excessive

Initially, โ€œmore than 500 pagesโ€ sounds enormous.

Then you look at the roster.

Look at the releases.

Look at the scenes involved.

Look at the financial collapse.

Look at the move across America.

Look at the relationship between ISIS and the label.

Look at Cave Inโ€™s major-label adventure.

Look at all the strange records.

Suddenly 500 pages feels like theyโ€™re being restrained.

There are probably individual Hydra Head packaging decisions capable of filling a chapter.

๐ŸŽจ This Book Is About More Than Music

The story also represents a particular era of underground culture.

Before every band had social media.

Before streaming dashboards.

Before artists could upload directly to digital platforms within hours.

Labels mattered differently.

They provided infrastructure.

Credibility.

Distribution.

Design.

Community.

Connections.

A label such as Hydra Head could help define an entire musical ecosystem.

You recognised the logo and knew you were entering a particular world.

๐Ÿ›’ Pre-Orders Are Open Now

Deconstructing Towers: The Story Of Hydra Head Records is available for pre-order through Decibel Books, with copies currently expected to begin shipping in early December 2026.

The book contains the huge main history, the 32-page colour section, rare and previously unseen photographs, extensive interviews and Aaron Turnerโ€™s newly created cover art.

Basically:

Perfect Christmas reading for somebody whose idea of festive cheer is listening to Oceanic while examining obscure vinyl pressing variations.

๐Ÿค˜ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Some record labels release music.

Others create scenes around themselves.

Hydra Head Records did the latter.

Aaron Turner started the operation as a teenager and somehow turned it into one of underground heavy musicโ€™s most distinctive institutions.

It gave adventurous bands somewhere to exist.

It treated artwork seriously.

It ignored genre boundaries.

It released records that became hugely influential.

And it occasionally behaved like the organisational equivalent of someone sprinting downhill carrying seventeen boxes of vinyl while shouting:

โ€œDONโ€™T WORRY, Iโ€™VE GOT THIS.โ€

Eventually, the chaos caught up.

But the records remained.

And so did the influence.

Deconstructing Towers now has the chance to tell the whole story โ€” not simply the celebrated albums, but the friendships, compromises, financial disasters, creative breakthroughs and strange decisions required to keep an uncompromising independent label alive.

With more than 500 pages, a 32-page colour section, rare photography, extensive firsthand accounts and artwork from Aaron Turner himself, this looks like far more than another metal coffee-table book.

It looks like an autopsy of one of underground musicโ€™s most fascinating experiments.

Hydra Head may be gone โ€” but those records are still reshaping heavy music decades later. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿค˜

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
