One of the most emotional days in heavy metal history is coming to the big screen, with Ozzy & Black Sabbath: Back To The Beginning set to receive a worldwide cinema release next month — giving fans another opportunity to experience Ozzy Osbourne’s extraordinary final performance and the last gathering of Black Sabbath’s original lineup.

Get the tissues ready.

And possibly earplugs, depending on how aggressively your local cinema handles the volume.

The monumental Back To The Beginning concert, staged at Villa Park in Birmingham on 5 July 2025, is being transformed into a full cinematic experience celebrating Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath and the enormous family of musicians their music inspired.

The film will arrive in cinemas worldwide for a limited run beginning 28 October 2026.

And considering everything that happened following that unforgettable day?

This is going to hit hard.

🖤 Ozzy’s Final Bow

When Back To The Beginning was originally announced, everyone understood its significance.

Ozzy Osbourne was coming home.

Back to Birmingham.

Back to the city where Black Sabbath began.

Back alongside Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward.

But nobody watching Villa Park that day could fully appreciate just how final the occasion would become.

Ozzy died on 22 July 2025, just 17 days after the concert.

That transformed an already emotional farewell into something almost impossible to recreate.

There would be no next show.

No surprise comeback.

No final-final tour.

That night in Birmingham really was goodbye.

🤘 The Original Black Sabbath Together Again

One of the defining moments of Back To The Beginning was seeing the original Black Sabbath lineup reunite.

Ozzy Osbourne – vocals

Tony Iommi – guitar

Geezer Butler – bass

Bill Ward – drums

Four musicians from Birmingham who helped create an entirely new form of music more than half a century earlier.

Heavy metal didn’t emerge from a marketing meeting.

It came from industrial Birmingham.

From Tony Iommi’s riffs.

Geezer Butler’s darkness.

Bill Ward’s thunderous drumming.

And Ozzy’s unmistakable voice.

Seeing those four people together again at Villa Park was history happening in real time.

🏟️ Villa Park Became The Centre Of The Metal Universe

For one extraordinary day, Birmingham wasn’t simply the birthplace of heavy metal.

It became its capital again.

Back To The Beginning assembled an absurd collection of rock and metal royalty to celebrate Ozzy and Sabbath.

Metallica.

Guns N’ Roses.

Slayer.

Tool.

Pantera.

Alice In Chains.

Gojira.

Anthrax.

And an enormous selection of musicians from across generations of heavy music.

This wasn’t simply another festival bill.

It was effectively metal’s family tree assembling in the same stadium to honour the musicians who helped plant the roots.

🎸 Everybody Came Home To Say Thank You

That’s what made the event different.

The other artists weren’t simply there because somebody had offered them a festival slot.

They were there because Black Sabbath mattered to them.

You can draw a line from Sabbath into practically every major branch of heavy music that followed.

Doom.

Thrash.

Stoner metal.

Grunge.

Sludge.

Alternative metal.

Death metal.

Traditional heavy metal.

Even bands that sound nothing like Sabbath owe something to the doors those four Birmingham musicians kicked open.

Back To The Beginning became one enormous:

“Thank you.”

🎬 Now We Get The Cinematic Version

The upcoming concert film promises more than simply replaying the livestream on a bigger screen.

It has been assembled specifically as a cinematic presentation, combining performances from the historic show with behind-the-scenes footage and reflections from musicians influenced by Ozzy and Black Sabbath.

That should give the film a different rhythm from watching the original all-day event.

Rather than attempting to reproduce every minute of an enormous concert marathon, the movie can focus on the emotional story running through the day.

Ozzy.

Sabbath.

Birmingham.

The musicians inspired by them.

And one final journey back to where everything started.

🔊 Heavy Metal In A Cinema? Turn It Up

There is also something beautifully appropriate about experiencing this particular event in a cinema.

Big screen.

Massive sound system.

Dark room.

Tony Iommi riff.

Lovely.

The film has been prepared with premium surround-sound presentation, meaning those Sabbath riffs should have considerably more impact than watching clips through your phone speaker while waiting for the kettle to boil.

If ever there were a concert movie that deserved ridiculous volume, this is probably it.

Your local multiplex may never recover.

🦇 Ozzy’s Solo Performance Was Already Emotional

Before Black Sabbath took the stage, Ozzy performed material from his solo career.

That alone carried enormous emotional weight.

His health problems had dramatically limited his ability to perform in the years leading up to the concert.

For a long time, fans wondered whether they would ever see him properly perform again.

Then there he was.

In Birmingham.

Surrounded by musicians who adored him.

Singing for the people who had followed his career for decades.

It wasn’t about athletic stage movement.

It wasn’t about pretending nothing had changed.

It was simply Ozzy doing what he’d spent his life doing.

Performing.

💜 Then Sabbath Appeared

And then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.

The original Black Sabbath.

Whatever arguments, departures, reunions and complicated history existed between those four musicians suddenly became secondary.

They were back together.

One final time.

That matters enormously.

Black Sabbath’s history was never particularly straightforward.

Ozzy left.

Ronnie James Dio arrived.

Bill Ward departed at various points.

Different lineups followed.

Reunions happened.

More changes came.

But the mythology always returned to those original four musicians from Birmingham.

Back To The Beginning finally brought that story full circle.

🎤 Sharon Osbourne Helped Make Ozzy’s Final Wish Happen

The concert itself grew from something deeply personal.

The goal wasn’t simply to manufacture another giant rock event.

It was about giving Ozzy the opportunity to return home and properly say goodbye to the fans.

That context became considerably more poignant after his death.

He got his farewell.

He got Birmingham.

He got Sabbath.

He got to see generations of musicians who had followed in his footsteps.

And most importantly, he got an audience there to tell him exactly what he meant to them.

That’s something many artists never receive.

🌍 Fans Around The World Will Get Another Chance

Not everyone could get inside Villa Park.

Not everyone watched the original broadcast.

And plenty of fans simply want the chance to experience the whole thing again knowing what we know now.

The cinema release gives them that opportunity.

And this won’t feel like an ordinary night at the pictures.

You can practically predict the atmosphere already.

Battle jackets.

Sabbath shirts.

Ozzy shirts.

People comparing gig memories before the trailers.

Probably somebody shouting “OZZY! OZZY! OZZY!” before the lights have even gone down.

Quite right too.

⚡ Metallica, Slayer, Pantera And More On The Big Screen

Another major attraction is the sheer amount of heavy-metal history surrounding Ozzy’s final performance.

Back To The Beginning wasn’t only important because of who headlined.

Look at the musicians gathered around them.

Metallica have openly carried Sabbath’s influence throughout their career.

Slayer emerged from a world Sabbath helped make possible.

Pantera took heaviness into another generation.

Gojira represent another evolution entirely.

Each band sounds different.

Yet all those paths eventually lead backwards towards Birmingham.

Watching those artists pay tribute becomes part of the story.

🎸 Tom Morello Helped Assemble An Extraordinary Celebration

Tom Morello served as musical director for the event, helping bring together the huge collection of musicians involved.

And frankly, coordinating that many rock stars probably deserves its own documentary.

Imagine the group chat.

Trying to organise normal musicians is difficult enough.

Now try organising members of some of the biggest bands on Earth.

But somehow it happened.

The resulting show became far bigger than simply another Ozzy concert.

It became a celebration of heavy music itself.

🏠 Birmingham Was The Only Place It Could End

There couldn’t really have been another location.

Los Angeles might have been important to Ozzy’s solo story.

London could have hosted something enormous.

Las Vegas could certainly have provided enough lights.

But this needed to happen in Birmingham.

Black Sabbath started there.

Ozzy started there.

Industrial surroundings helped influence the darkness and heaviness that eventually became Sabbath’s identity.

So calling the event Back To The Beginning wasn’t clever marketing.

It was literal.

The story ended where it began.

🖤 The Film Will Inevitably Feel Different Now

This is where things become difficult.

Watching footage from July 2025 now carries emotional weight that simply wasn’t there in exactly the same way on the day.

Every smile matters more.

Every interaction matters more.

Every time Ozzy addresses the crowd matters more.

You know there isn’t another chapter coming.

That’s heartbreaking.

But it also makes the footage incredibly valuable.

Millions of fans can now revisit one of the final moments when Ozzy was exactly where he wanted to be:

Onstage.

🎶 Concert Films Preserve Moments That Otherwise Disappear

That’s why great concert films matter.

Gigs are temporary.

The lights go down.

The band walks on.

For two hours, everything feels enormous.

Then suddenly the house lights come back up and everybody is queuing for the car park.

Film preserves that temporary magic.

Think of The Song Remains The Same.

Stop Making Sense.

The Last Waltz.

Metallica’s S&M.

Legendary concert films don’t simply document music.

They preserve a moment in a band’s story.

Back To The Beginning has more reason than most to exist.

🦇 Ozzy Changed More Than Heavy Metal

Ozzy’s influence became much bigger than any one genre.

Obviously there’s Black Sabbath.

Then came an enormous solo career.

Randy Rhoads.

Blizzard Of Ozz.

Diary Of A Madman.

Ozzfest.

Reality television.

Generations discovering Ozzy through entirely different eras.

For one fan, he’s the singer on Paranoid.

For another, he’s the bloke responsible for No More Tears.

For another generation, he was the wonderfully confused father wandering through The Osbournes.

Somehow all of those things belonged to the same person.

🔥 Black Sabbath Changed The World With A Riff

And then there’s Sabbath themselves.

The opening notes of “Black Sabbath” still sound ominous more than half a century later.

War Pigs.

Paranoid.

Iron Man.

Children Of The Grave.

Into The Void.

Sweet Leaf.

Entire genres are hiding inside those songs.

It’s difficult to imagine modern heavy music without them.

That’s why so many musicians showed up at Villa Park.

They weren’t merely honouring famous colleagues.

They were acknowledging foundations.

🎟️ A Limited Cinema Event

Ozzy & Black Sabbath: Back To The Beginning begins screening in cinemas worldwide on 28 October 2026, with the release planned as a limited theatrical event.

That means anyone wanting to experience it surrounded by fellow Sabbath and Ozzy fans probably shouldn’t assume it’ll be sitting at the local cinema indefinitely.

This is very much an event screening.

And frankly?

That’s exactly how it should be.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Some concert films are entertainment.

This one is history.

Back To The Beginning captured something that can never happen again.

Ozzy Osbourne’s final performance.

The original Black Sabbath together one last time.

Birmingham welcoming its sons home.

And generations of rock and metal musicians gathering to thank them.

When the concert happened on 5 July 2025, everyone knew they were witnessing a farewell.

Nobody realised quite how final that goodbye would become just 17 days later.

Now, more than a year on, fans around the world will be able to gather again — this time inside cinemas — and experience that extraordinary day on the biggest screen possible.

There will be huge riffs.

There will be laughter.

There will almost certainly be tears.

And when Ozzy appears on that screen?

You already know what’s going to happen.

OZZY! OZZY! OZZY!

One final time at maximum volume.

Ozzy & Black Sabbath: Back To The Beginning hits cinemas worldwide from 28 October 2026. 🦇🎬🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
