The Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards has entered the wild world of Grand Theft Auto VI, recording a suitably gritty version of Jimmy Reed’s blues classic “Bright Lights, Big City” for the game’s official soundtrack — and you can hear it now.

Well, this combination makes almost too much sense.

Keith Richards.

The blues.

Vice City.

Put those ingredients together and you’re already halfway towards something involving a battered guitar, a suspicious motel and a convertible disappearing into the Florida sunset.

Richards has released his take on Jimmy Reed’s 1961 classic “Bright Lights, Big City”, with the recording set to feature on Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album when the soundtrack arrives alongside the hugely anticipated game on 19 November 2026.

And rather wonderfully, Keith’s version is already available to hear.

🎶 Keith Richards Meets Jimmy Reed

If there’s one thing nobody should be surprised about, it’s Keith Richards covering an old blues record.

The blues isn’t simply an influence on Richards.

It sits right at the foundation of everything he has spent more than six decades doing.

Long before stadium tours, enormous Rolling Stones records and Keith developing his apparently immortal relationship with cigarettes and Telecasters, he and Mick Jagger were obsessive fans of American blues musicians.

Muddy Waters.

Howlin’ Wolf.

Chuck Berry.

Little Walter.

And, of course, Jimmy Reed.

So “Bright Lights, Big City” isn’t some random soundtrack assignment handed to a famous guitarist.

There’s genuine history here.

🌃 ‘Bright Lights, Big City’ Dates Back To 1961

Jimmy Reed originally released “Bright Lights, Big City” in 1961, and the track went on to become one of his best-known recordings.

It’s classic Reed.

Simple.

Grooving.

Relaxed.

Deceptively effective.

You don’t need seventeen guitar tracks when the riff already works.

The song tells the familiar blues tale of somebody becoming seduced by the excitement of the city while another person watches everything start slipping away.

And more than sixty years later, the idea still works perfectly.

Particularly in a game called Grand Theft Auto.

🎸 Keith Gives It That Richards Swagger

Richards’ new recording doesn’t need to turn the song into something unrecognisable.

Instead, he leans into exactly what makes him Keith Richards.

The guitar has more bite.

The rhythm lurches forward with that wonderfully loose-but-somehow-perfect feel he has spent decades mastering.

And then there’s the voice.

Weathered would be putting it politely.

Keith now sounds like somebody poured bourbon over an old valve amplifier and taught it to sing.

Which is precisely why it works.

His voice carries age, character and absolutely zero polish.

A glossy vocal performance would completely miss the point.

🤘 Keith Richards Singing Blues Is Basically Home Territory

Richards has never needed to sound technically perfect.

That isn’t his appeal.

Everything is about feel.

The way the guitar sits fractionally behind the beat.

The gaps between chords.

The little imperfections.

That unmistakable rasp.

It’s the same philosophy that helped make The Rolling Stones what they became.

Rock ’n’ roll isn’t supposed to sound like somebody completed it using a spreadsheet.

Sometimes it should wobble slightly.

Keith has made an entire career out of wobbling magnificently.

🪨 The Rolling Stones Actually Recorded The Song Decades Ago

There’s another lovely connection here.

The Rolling Stones themselves recorded “Bright Lights, Big City” during their earliest years, back when the young London band were still heavily immersed in American blues and R&B.

That early Stones recording dates from 1963, although it remained unreleased for decades before eventually surfacing officially on the band’s GRRR! collection in 2012.

So Richards isn’t discovering this song in 2026.

He’s returning to something that was part of his musical world before The Rolling Stones had even become THE ROLLING STONES.

More than sixty years later, he’s playing it again.

That’s one hell of a full-circle moment.

🎮 Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album Is Going Big

Richards’ track forms part of the official Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album.

The soundtrack will feature 34 original recordings designed to accompany the world of Vice City and Leonida.

And Rockstar clearly hasn’t restricted itself to one genre.

Keith Richards sits alongside artists from hip-hop, pop, electronic music, Latin music and country, reflecting the franchise’s long-standing habit of throwing wildly different musical worlds together.

Six tracks have already been released ahead of the full album.

Alongside Keith’s “Bright Lights, Big City”, the initial batch includes music from Travis Scott, Yung Lean featuring Future and Metro Boomin, Morgan Wallen, Rauw Alejandro, and a collaboration involving CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso, PinkPantheress, Fred again.. and Etienne de Crécy.

That is quite the playlist.

🚗 Music Has Always Been Massive In Grand Theft Auto

One thing Rockstar has always understood better than most game developers is the importance of music.

Those radio stations matter.

You steal a car.

Drive across the city.

Flick through stations.

Then suddenly a song kicks in and becomes permanently attached to that particular moment.

Players have discovered countless older artists through Grand Theft Auto games.

Rock.

Metal.

Punk.

Hip-hop.

Country.

Electronic.

Reggae.

Classic pop.

Entire generations have found bands because they happened to nick the right virtual car at the right time.

That cultural influence shouldn’t be underestimated.

📻 GTA Has A Serious Rock History

Rock fans have been particularly well served over the years.

The franchise has featured everything from classic rock and punk to metal and alternative music across its enormous collection of fictional radio stations.

For plenty of younger players, those games became accidental music education.

You’re driving around doing something unquestionably illegal in a fictional city…

…and suddenly you’ve discovered a band from 1978.

Beautiful.

Grand Theft Auto VI looks determined to continue that tradition.

🌴 ‘Bright Lights, Big City’ Feels Perfect For Vice City

And honestly, Keith’s track feels tailor-made for the environment.

Vice City has always existed in a world of neon.

Fast cars.

Nightlife.

Money.

Bad decisions.

People convinced the next big opportunity is just around the corner.

“Bright Lights, Big City” was written decades before anyone imagined a PlayStation, yet thematically it fits almost perfectly.

That’s the mark of a strong song.

Technology changes.

Cities change.

Human beings continue making questionable decisions under bright lights.

Some things are timeless.

💿 The Soundtrack Is Getting A Proper Physical Release Too

This isn’t going to exist purely as a streaming playlist either.

Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album is also being released on vinyl and CD, including a selection of special editions.

And naturally, this is Grand Theft Auto we’re talking about, so somebody has decided normal black vinyl simply isn’t ridiculous enough.

Among the variants is a limited-edition liquid-filled vinyl.

Because obviously.

You can’t just release a record in 2026.

It apparently needs to contain fluids.

Record collectors, start preparing your bank accounts now.

🎸 Keith Richards Still Refuses To Behave Like A Retired Musician

Perhaps the most enjoyable thing about this entire story is that Keith Richards remains creatively active.

He has nothing left to prove.

Absolutely nothing.

The Rolling Stones already occupy one of the largest chapters in rock history.

Richards could spend the rest of his life sitting somewhere very expensive while everybody tells him how influential he is.

Instead, he’s still recording blues songs for video-game soundtracks.

That’s significantly more fun.

🖤 The Blues Remains At The Heart Of Everything

The recording also provides another reminder of just how deeply rock music owes its existence to the blues.

The Rolling Stones didn’t invent that musical language.

Neither did Led Zeppelin.

Neither did Eric Clapton.

Neither did the countless rock bands that followed.

They took inspiration from generations of blues musicians and carried those ideas somewhere else.

Keith Richards has always been particularly vocal about acknowledging that debt.

Recording Jimmy Reed again in 2026 keeps that connection visible.

And if a 17-year-old hears “Bright Lights, Big City” through GTA VI, looks up Jimmy Reed and ends up discovering an entire world of blues music?

That’s brilliant.

🔥 From 1961 To 2026

That’s the really mad part.

Jimmy Reed releases “Bright Lights, Big City” in 1961.

The young Rolling Stones record it in 1963.

Keith Richards returns to it more than six decades later.

Then the new version ends up attached to one of the biggest video-game releases on the planet in 2026.

Songs travel in strange ways.

A blues recording made before The Beatles had released their first single is now connected to a digital recreation of modern America involving supercars, smartphones and almost certainly someone firing a rocket launcher from a speedboat.

Jimmy probably didn’t see that coming.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Keith Richards covering “Bright Lights, Big City” for Grand Theft Auto VI feels less like a strange celebrity cameo and more like several pieces of music history lining up perfectly.

Richards loves Jimmy Reed.

The Rolling Stones played the song before they became global superstars.

The blues has always sat at the centre of Keith’s musical identity.

And Grand Theft Auto has spent decades introducing players to music they might never otherwise hear.

Put all that together and you get something far more interesting than another soundtrack track.

It’s Keith Richards reconnecting with one of the songs that helped shape him — more than sixty years after he first played it.

Now it’s heading towards Vice City.

Start the engine.

Turn the radio up.

Try not to crash into anything.

Actually, it’s Grand Theft Auto.

Forget that last bit.

Keith Richards’ “Bright Lights, Big City” is out now, with Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album arriving on 19 November 2026. 🎸🌃🔥

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
