KISS co-founder Gene Simmons is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the IEBA 2026 Honors & Awards Ceremony, recognising a career that has spent more than five decades reshaping the business, spectacle and sheer bloody scale of rock ’n’ roll.

There are rock stars.

There are entrepreneurs.

There are showmen.

And then there’s Gene Simmons.

The KISS bassist, vocalist and co-founder will be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the IEBA 2026 Honors & Awards Ceremony, adding another major accolade to a career already packed with platinum records, sold-out arenas, outrageous stage shows and enough merchandise to stock a small country.

For Simmons, whose life in music has always existed somewhere between heavy rock, theatre, branding and full-scale business warfare, the award feels particularly fitting.

Because whatever anybody thinks of Gene Simmons — and people certainly have opinions — there’s no denying he helped turn KISS into one of the most recognisable rock bands on the planet.

🎸 More Than Five Decades Of KISS

KISS formed in New York City in 1973, with Simmons joining forces with Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss to create something considerably bigger than an ordinary rock band.

The songs mattered.

Obviously.

But KISS understood almost immediately that rock ’n’ roll could be theatre.

Makeup.

Costumes.

Smoke.

Fire.

Explosions.

Blood.

Levitation.

Flaming guitars.

And enough flashing lights to make the local electricity board nervous.

The result became one of rock history’s most distinctive live spectacles.

And Simmons — dressed as The Demon — was right at the centre of it.

👅 The Demon Became A Rock Icon

Long before social media turned every musician into a walking brand, Gene Simmons understood the importance of having an instantly recognisable image.

Black-and-white makeup.

Armour.

Platform boots.

That tongue.

You could see a silhouette and know exactly who it was.

The Demon became part horror character, part comic-book villain and part rock star.

And once Simmons started breathing fire and spitting blood onstage?

Forget it.

Every parent in America suddenly knew who KISS were.

Which was probably exactly the plan.

🔥 The Songs Backed Up The Spectacle

KISS wouldn’t have survived for decades on pyrotechnics alone.

Underneath the makeup sat a ridiculous catalogue of songs.

Rock And Roll All Nite.

Detroit Rock City.

Deuce.

God Of Thunder.

Shout It Out Loud.

Love Gun.

I Was Made For Lovin’ You.

These weren’t obscure cult tracks.

They became enormous rock anthems.

And Simmons’ bass playing and unmistakable voice helped provide much of the band’s heavier personality.

Particularly when God Of Thunder kicked in.

That one still sounds like it should arrive accompanied by actual lightning.

💼 Gene Simmons Also Changed The Business Of Rock

This is where Simmons separates himself from plenty of other rock stars.

He never seemed remotely embarrassed about treating KISS as a business.

Quite the opposite.

The KISS logo became one of music’s most recognisable pieces of branding.

And then it appeared on basically everything.

T-shirts.

Figures.

Posters.

Lunchboxes.

Pinball machines.

Comics.

Coffins.

Yes.

KISS coffins.

At some point, the merchandising department clearly asked:

“Is there anything we won’t put the logo on?”

And Gene apparently replied:

“No.”

Fair enough.

🤘 Merchandising Became Part Of The KISS Experience

Plenty of bands sold merchandise before KISS.

But KISS took the idea to another level.

The brand became almost as powerful as the music.

Fans didn’t simply buy records.

They joined the KISS Army.

They collected everything.

They wore the makeup.

They bought the shirts.

They became part of an entire culture surrounding the band.

That approach influenced generations of musicians who realised a band could become something far larger than a collection of albums.

Today, musicians routinely build clothing lines, limited editions, collectables and entire lifestyle brands.

KISS were doing that sort of thing decades ago.

Usually with more explosions.

🎤 IEBA Recognition Goes Beyond The Stage

The International Entertainment Buyers Association operates within the wider live-entertainment industry, bringing together people involved in booking, talent buying, concerts and touring.

That makes Simmons’ recognition particularly interesting.

This isn’t simply an award acknowledging famous songs.

It recognises a career built inside the machinery of live entertainment itself.

And KISS were absolute masters of turning concerts into events.

You didn’t simply go and hear the songs.

You went to see KISS.

There’s a difference.

🏟️ KISS Helped Redefine The Arena Rock Show

Modern stadium and arena productions can involve enormous video screens, moving platforms, flames, drones and enough technology to launch a satellite.

But KISS helped establish the expectation that rock concerts should feel huge.

The band’s shows became increasingly elaborate over the decades.

Risers.

Fireworks.

Confetti.

Smoke.

Paul Stanley flying over audiences.

Gene Simmons ascending above the stage.

At various points it felt less like a concert and more like somebody had given a comic-book supervillain unlimited access to a production warehouse.

Glorious.

🎶 Gene Simmons Was Always More Than The Character

It’s easy to focus entirely on The Demon.

But Simmons is also a songwriter and musician who helped construct the KISS sound from the earliest days.

His bass work could be melodic, aggressive and surprisingly busy beneath the band’s straightforward hard-rock arrangements.

And his darker vocal tone provided a useful contrast with Paul Stanley’s more soaring delivery.

That dual-frontman setup became another important part of KISS.

One band.

Two very different lead voices.

And occasionally a drummer or guitarist wandering up to sing one too.

Why have one singer when everybody wants a go?

🖤 A Career Full Of Reinvention

KISS also survived something plenty of bands don’t:

changing eras.

The makeup came off.

Musicians changed.

Musical trends shifted.

Disco arrived.

Hair metal arrived.

Grunge arrived.

The original lineup reunited.

The makeup returned.

Farewell tours happened.

Then more tours happened.

Then another farewell.

Basically, KISS history occasionally requires a flowchart.

But through all of it, Simmons remained one of the constants.

That sort of longevity in rock is incredibly rare.

🎸 From Small Clubs To Global Recognition

When Simmons and Stanley were putting KISS together in early-1970s New York, there was no guarantee any of this would work.

In fact, the earliest records weren’t instant blockbuster successes.

The band built its reputation through live performance.

Night after night.

City after city.

Then Alive! arrived in 1975 and everything changed.

The record captured the excitement of KISS onstage and helped transform them from struggling rock band into a major attraction.

That emphasis on live performance makes an award connected to the entertainment industry feel especially appropriate.

KISS were built onstage.

🔥 ‘Alive!’ Became A Landmark

Alive! remains one of rock’s defining live albums.

It captured something studio recordings hadn’t fully communicated:

The scale.

The crowd.

The energy.

The spectacle.

Suddenly listeners understood what KISS were supposed to feel like.

Not quiet.

Not tasteful.

Not subtle.

Huge.

That record helped save the band commercially and launched the next phase of their career.

Without it, rock history might look surprisingly different.

👑 Gene Simmons Built A Character Bigger Than Himself

Very few musicians create stage personas that become globally recognisable beyond the music.

David Bowie had Ziggy Stardust.

Alice Cooper developed his macabre theatrical identity.

And Gene Simmons became The Demon.

Children knew the face.

Parents knew the face.

People who couldn’t name three KISS songs still knew the face.

That level of cultural recognition doesn’t happen accidentally.

It requires decades of relentless consistency.

And probably a truly heroic amount of face paint.

💰 Gene Has Never Apologised For Wanting Success

Simmons has always been unusually open about money.

This occasionally irritates people.

Possibly because rock culture still likes pretending musicians should be completely unconcerned with earning anything.

Gene never bought into that idea.

For him, the business side was always part of the game.

Songs.

Touring.

Licensing.

Merchandise.

Branding.

He treated them as parts of the same ecosystem.

You don’t have to agree with every opinion he’s expressed about the industry to recognise that the bloke understood how to build a durable entertainment brand.

🌎 KISS Became An International Institution

KISS didn’t remain an American phenomenon either.

The band became enormous internationally.

Europe.

South America.

Japan.

Australia.

Everywhere the makeup went, audiences seemed to understand it immediately.

The imagery crossed language barriers.

You didn’t need to speak English to understand:

Giant demon bloke breathing fire = probably entertaining.

Universal language.

🤘 Generations Of Bands Followed

The influence of KISS stretches across rock, metal, punk and alternative music.

Some musicians loved the songs.

Some loved the visuals.

Some loved the business model.

Some simply saw KISS and thought:

“I want to do THAT.”

Bands from completely different genres have cited KISS as an influence because the lesson wasn’t necessarily about copying the sound.

It was about understanding performance.

Make people remember you.

Give them something they cannot get anywhere else.

That principle still works.

🏆 A Lifetime Achievement Award That Really Means ‘Lifetime’

The phrase Lifetime Achievement Award gets thrown around regularly.

But in Simmons’ case?

We’re talking about a professional career stretching beyond half a century.

That’s decades of recording.

Touring.

Promotion.

Television.

Business.

Merchandising.

Film.

Publishing.

And countless interviews where Gene Simmons says something guaranteed to produce headlines approximately eight minutes later.

Consistency is important.

🎤 KISS May Have Finished Touring, But Gene Isn’t Vanishing

The conclusion of KISS’ major touring era didn’t exactly result in Simmons quietly disappearing into retirement.

That would require Gene Simmons understanding the concept of sitting still.

Good luck.

His public profile, business ventures and musical interests continue.

And awards like this demonstrate just how significant the KISS story remains even as the traditional touring chapter evolves.

You don’t spend five decades building an empire and suddenly become anonymous on Monday morning.

🖤 Remembering The Whole KISS Story

Of course, a lifetime honour connected with Simmons also inevitably prompts reflection on the wider KISS story.

Paul Stanley.

Ace Frehley.

Peter Criss.

Eric Carr.

Bruce Kulick.

Tommy Thayer.

Eric Singer.

And everyone who contributed to different chapters.

KISS was never simply one person.

But Simmons was undeniably one of the central engines driving the whole machine from the beginning.

Bass player.

Singer.

Songwriter.

Demon.

Businessman.

Professional tongue owner.

Quite the CV.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Gene Simmons receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the IEBA 2026 Honors & Awards Ceremony makes complete sense.

You don’t have to love every decision KISS made.

You don’t need to own the lunchbox.

Or the action figures.

Or, indeed, the coffin.

But the impact is undeniable.

Gene Simmons helped transform a scrappy New York rock band into one of the most recognisable entertainment brands on Earth.

He helped make concerts bigger.

Merchandise more ambitious.

Stage characters more theatrical.

And rock ’n’ roll considerably louder, stranger and more spectacular.

More than fifty years after KISS first started putting on the makeup, The Demon is still collecting trophies.

And knowing Gene?

He’ll probably figure out how to sell a commemorative version afterwards.

Congratulations, Gene. Long live The Demon. 👅🔥🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
