Gaming tablets have spent years sitting in a slightly awkward corner of the tech world.

Some are basically oversized Android phones. Others are productivity tablets with a few gaming features slapped on the side. And plenty promise console-rivalling performance before becoming approximately as warm as the surface of the sun after twenty minutes of serious gaming.

Then there’s REDMAGIC.

The gaming-focused brand has never been particularly interested in subtlety, and the REDMAGIC Astra 2 might be its most gloriously ridiculous tablet yet.

We’re talking a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, a ridiculously fast 185Hz OLED display, dedicated gaming hardware, dual USB-C ports, an enormous 8,300mAh battery, 75W fast charging and — because apparently ordinary cooling simply wasn’t dramatic enough — a visible liquid-cooling system.

Yes.

Liquid cooling.

In an Android tablet.

Someone at REDMAGIC clearly looked at a gaming PC and thought: “Right then, how much of this can we cram into something you can hold on the sofa?”

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

So grab the controller, silence the notifications and tell your battery percentage to prepare itself.

This is The Riff Report’s full REDMAGIC Astra 2 review.

💧 First Things First – That Liquid Cooling

We might as well start with the feature REDMAGIC clearly wants everybody talking about.

The Astra 2 uses the company’s AquaCore Cooling System 2.0, combining a visible liquid-cooling circuit with Liquid Metal 3.0, graphene, copper components and a substantial vapour chamber.

And, purely from a tech-nerd perspective, it’s brilliant.

The liquid system is designed to move heat away from the processor while the vapour chamber and internal thermal layers spread that heat across a larger surface area.

The important bit isn’t merely that it looks cool through the transparent section on the rear.

It’s there to fight the biggest enemy of mobile gaming:

thermal throttling.

A powerful mobile processor can smash benchmark scores for a few minutes fairly easily. The real challenge is maintaining that performance after you’ve spent an hour hammering through Call Of Duty Mobile, Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves or another graphically demanding title.

That’s where the Astra 2 earns its gaming credentials.

Translation?

This thing doesn’t just sprint. It can keep running.

And that matters far more to serious gamers than some enormous benchmark number you’ll look at once and immediately forget.

🚀 Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 – Absolute Overkill In The Best Possible Way

At the heart of the Astra 2 sits Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

And good grief, there’s some power here.

Paired with either 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and extremely quick UFS 4.1 storage, the Astra 2 belongs firmly amongst the fastest Android gaming tablets available.

Apps open almost instantaneously.

Multitasking is effortless.

Menus fly.

Game loading times are short.

And demanding Android titles can be pushed to high graphical settings without the tablet immediately waving a tiny white flag.

REDMAGIC also includes its RedCore R4 gaming chip, which assists with gaming-specific workloads and features.

The obvious question is whether anybody actually needs this amount of performance in a tablet.

Probably not.

But nobody needs a Marshall stack capable of flattening the front three rows either.

Sometimes excessive performance is the whole bloody point.

🎯 Gaming Performance – This Is What The Astra 2 Was Built For

The Astra 2 isn’t pretending to be a lifestyle tablet that happens to run games.

Gaming is the headline act.

REDMAGIC’s GameSpace environment brings together performance controls, gaming settings and system monitoring into one dedicated interface.

Players can prioritise performance, adjust settings and reduce distractions without digging endlessly through Android menus.

The dedicated Magic Key can launch GameSpace immediately, although REDMAGIC allows it to be reassigned to other functions.

Then you’ve got the dual X-axis vibration motors.

Haptic feedback in tablets is surprisingly uncommon, so having proper vibration feedback makes compatible games feel considerably more involving.

Pair the Astra 2 with a decent Bluetooth or USB-C controller and suddenly you’re dealing with something much closer to a giant Android handheld console than a conventional tablet.

That’s where the compact dimensions begin making enormous sense.

📱 9.06-Inch OLED Display – Absolutely Gorgeous

You can have all the processing power in the world, but if you’re staring at a miserable washed-out LCD panel, what’s the point?

Fortunately, REDMAGIC hasn’t cheaped out.

The 9.06-inch OLED display delivers a resolution of 2,400 × 1,504 pixels, resulting in roughly 313 pixels per inch.

Colours punch beautifully.

Black levels are properly black.

Contrast is excellent.

Games look fantastic.

Films look cracking.

And colourful titles absolutely leap off the screen.

Then comes the refresh rate.

185Hz.

One hundred and eighty-five bloody hertz.

That’s absurd for a tablet.

Don’t expect every Android game magically to start running at 185fps. Game support and engine limitations mean many titles will operate at 60Hz, 90Hz or 120Hz.

But when high-refresh-rate content is available, the Astra 2 feels phenomenally responsive.

Even ordinary interface navigation feels ridiculously smooth.

The screen can reach around 1,600 nits of peak brightness, making outdoor visibility considerably better than you’d expect from a gaming-focused device.

👆 Touch Response – Built For Competitive Gaming

Refresh rate isn’t the entire story.

Touch responsiveness matters enormously for competitive mobile games.

REDMAGIC claims an instantaneous peak touch-sampling rate of up to 2,000Hz.

That doesn’t mean the display itself refreshes 2,000 times per second.

Instead, it relates to how quickly the device can detect touch input.

For fast shooters, rhythm games and competitive titles where fractions of a second matter, reducing input latency can make controls feel noticeably sharper.

Casual Candy Crush players probably won’t care.

Competitive Call Of Duty Mobile players?

Different story entirely.

📐 Size & Weight – The Sweet Spot?

The Astra 2 measures approximately 207.1 × 134.2 × 6.9mm and weighs 363g.

That makes it dramatically more portable than many 11-inch, 12-inch and enormous 14-inch Android tablets.

And for gaming, that’s arguably a huge advantage.

Hold a massive productivity tablet for an hour while playing a game and your wrists may eventually begin drafting their resignation letters.

At 9.06 inches, the Astra 2 occupies a lovely middle ground.

It’s noticeably larger than a smartphone, giving games far more breathing room, while remaining small enough to hold comfortably.

Stick it in a backpack and it won’t become a travelling workout either.

For trains, flights, hotels, backstage areas, festivals or simply lying on the sofa pretending you haven’t been playing for four hours, the size works extremely well.

🛠️ Build Quality & Design

The Astra 2 uses a metal frame with glass detailing on the rear.

It’s available in Eclipse and Starfrost, essentially giving buyers darker or lighter styling options.

Naturally, this is still REDMAGIC.

Nobody was expecting something that looks like it belongs beside a beige filing cabinet.

The transparent elements, RGB lighting and visible cooling hardware give the tablet plenty of gaming personality without going completely bonkers.

It’s futuristic without resembling something stolen from the bridge of a budget sci-fi film.

The 6.9mm thickness is particularly impressive considering what REDMAGIC has packed inside.

🔊 Speakers – Surprisingly Important

Tablet speakers are often treated like an afterthought.

Not here.

The Astra 2 features dual 1227 stereo speakers, DTS:X Ultra processing and REDMAGIC’s N’Bass acoustic enhancement material.

They’re loud enough to make gaming perfectly enjoyable without immediately reaching for headphones, while improved clarity helps everything from explosions to dialogue cut through properly.

There’s naturally limited physical space for truly enormous bass, but for a compact tablet the sound has decent presence.

Games sound energetic.

Films have width.

Music doesn’t immediately make you wish you’d brought a Bluetooth speaker.

That’s a win.

🎧 Dual USB-C Ports Are More Useful Than They Sound

Here’s something more manufacturers should copy.

Two USB-C ports.

There’s a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connection with DisplayPort support alongside another USB-C connection positioned along another edge.

Why does that matter?

Because you can charge the tablet while gaming without having the cable awkwardly sticking directly into your hand.

It’s such a simple idea.

Yet when you’re gaming in landscape mode, it’s brilliant.

External-display support also makes connecting the Astra 2 to a monitor an interesting prospect.

Add a controller and you’ve suddenly got yourself a rather tasty little Android gaming station.

🔋 8,300mAh Battery – Built For Marathon Sessions

Gaming hardware is useless when the battery lasts about as long as a support band’s soundcheck.

REDMAGIC therefore gives the Astra 2 a chunky 8,300mAh dual-cell battery.

Battery endurance will naturally vary enormously depending on what you’re doing.

Running a demanding 3D game at high brightness and maximum performance will drain the battery considerably faster than Netflix, YouTube or web browsing.

Independent controlled testing has demonstrated close to 10 hours of gaming, although real-world figures will vary depending on the game, screen brightness, network connection, refresh rate and performance settings.

That’s seriously respectable.

For everyday mixed use, getting through a substantial chunk of the day shouldn’t present much trouble.

⚡ 75W Charging – Back Into The Game Quickly

When the battery finally does surrender, the Astra 2 supports charging at up to 75W.

A complete charge can take approximately 50 minutes with suitable charging hardware, making that enormous battery considerably less intimidating.

There is an important consideration, though.

The standard tablet package does not ordinarily include the power adapter, so buyers who don’t already own a sufficiently powerful compatible USB-C charger may need to budget for one separately.

REDMAGIC does occasionally run promotions where a charger is included as a free gift, so it is worth checking the offer available when ordering.

💾 RAM & Storage

Two primary configurations are available.

The entry version combines:

12GB RAM + 256GB storage

The more expensive model gives you:

16GB RAM + 512GB storage

Both use fast LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.1 storage.

For most gamers, 12GB of RAM should be plenty.

The bigger consideration is storage.

Modern games are becoming enormous, particularly once downloadable assets, texture packs and updates begin piling up.

If you’re planning to build a substantial games library and keep films or other media locally, the 512GB version makes considerably more sense.

💷 REDMAGIC Astra 2 Costing – How Much Will It Actually Cost?

Now we get to the important bit.

Because all this ridiculous gaming power is lovely until somebody has to get the bank card out.

The REDMAGIC Astra 2 starts at £599 in the UK.

There are two main configurations:

Model

RAM

Storage

UK Price

REDMAGIC Astra 2

12GB

256GB

£599

REDMAGIC Astra 2

16GB

512GB

£679

That means upgrading from the entry model to the top configuration costs:

£80 Extra

For that £80, you’re getting:

  • An extra 4GB of RAM
  • Double the storage
  • 512GB instead of 256GB
  • More breathing room for large games
  • More space for downloaded films and media
  • Better long-term flexibility

And, actually, we think that’s a fairly sensible upgrade.

💰 Which Astra 2 Offers The Best Value?

The £599 12GB/256GB model is easily powerful enough for the overwhelming majority of gamers.

Twelve gigabytes of RAM isn’t exactly struggling for breath.

If you mostly play a handful of favourite titles, stream media and don’t store massive amounts of content locally, save yourself the £80.

But heavy gamers should seriously consider spending the extra money.

Games are getting enormous.

Install enough AAA-style Android releases, downloadable texture packs, emulators and media files and 256GB can disappear quicker than you’d expect.

Moving to 512GB for £679 makes the Astra 2 a considerably more comfortable long-term purchase.

🏆 Our Pick: 16GB + 512GB – £679

If you’ve already decided to spend around £600 on a dedicated gaming tablet, we’d be tempted to find the extra £80 and go for the larger model.

Double the storage alone makes the upgrade attractive.

🔌 Don’t Forget The Charger Cost

Here’s something worth factoring into your budget.

The Astra 2 supports 75W fast charging, but a power adapter isn’t normally included in the standard box.

REDMAGIC’s 80W fast charger has an official price of around £24.90.

So, assuming you’re buying the official charger separately and there isn’t a promotion running, your realistic cost becomes approximately:

Setup

Tablet

Charger

Approx. Total

12GB + 256GB

£599

£24.90

£623.90

16GB + 512GB

£679

£24.90

£703.90

That puts a fully equipped top-spec Astra 2 setup just over the £700 mark before you start adding cases, controllers, headphones or other accessories.

REDMAGIC sometimes bundles the charger as a promotional free gift, so check the current deal before buying one separately.

🎮 What About Accessories?

This is where things can get dangerous.

You buy the tablet.

Then you think:

“Well, I’ll need a controller.”

Then:

“Probably need a case.”

Then:

“Headphones would be nice.”

And suddenly your £599 tablet has developed a considerable entourage.

Depending on what you already own, we’d consider budgeting something in the region of:

  • Tablet: £599–£679
  • Suitable fast charger: Around £25 if required
  • Protective case: Allow roughly £20–£50 depending on choice
  • Gaming controller: Around £40–£100+ depending on model
  • Headphones/earbuds: Completely dependent on what you want

A serious complete portable gaming setup could therefore easily reach somewhere around £700–£850+.

You absolutely don’t need all those extras immediately, though.

Already own a Bluetooth controller, USB-C charger and decent headphones?

Then the £599 base price really can be pretty close to your total spend.

💷 Is £599 Expensive?

Yes.

Let’s not pretend otherwise.

Six hundred quid is serious money for an Android tablet.

But context matters.

The Astra 2 isn’t trying to compete with cheap tablets designed primarily for YouTube, Facebook and browsing.

You’re paying for:

  • Flagship Snapdragon performance
  • 185Hz OLED display technology
  • Specialised liquid cooling
  • Fast storage
  • Gaming-specific hardware
  • Dual USB-C connectivity
  • Strong haptics
  • Large battery
  • 75W charging
  • High-end sustained gaming performance

Suddenly £599 begins looking rather more reasonable.

It’s still expensive.

But it doesn’t feel overpriced for the technology you’re getting.

🤖 Android 16 & REDMAGIC OS 11.5

The Astra 2 launches with REDMAGIC OS 11.5 based on Android 16.

Performance is wonderfully quick, and REDMAGIC provides plenty of gaming-specific customisation.

GameSpace remains the star.

It allows the tablet to behave more like dedicated gaming hardware rather than simply dumping you onto an ordinary Android home screen and wishing you luck.

The downside?

REDMAGIC’s software still isn’t quite as polished as what you’ll experience from Samsung, Google or Apple.

Some menus can feel busy, and there are occasional moments where the enormous hardware budget feels considerably bigger than the user-interface budget.

Nothing here ruins the experience.

But if software refinement matters more to you than gaming performance, there are more polished tablets elsewhere.

📸 Cameras – They’re Here

There’s a 13MP rear camera.

There’s a 9MP front camera.

And that is approximately as excited as anybody needs to become.

They’re perfectly capable of handling video calls, photographing documents, scanning QR codes and grabbing the occasional emergency photograph.

But nobody should buy the Astra 2 because they’re desperate to become the next great concert photographer.

Your phone almost certainly has a better camera.

And that’s fine.

This is a gaming machine.

Spending extra money on three enormous camera sensors would’ve completely missed the point.

🌐 Wi-Fi 7 & Connectivity

Wi-Fi performance is particularly important on a gaming-focused tablet, so support for Wi-Fi 7 is welcome.

There’s also Bluetooth 6.0 for controllers, headphones, keyboards, mice and other accessories.

What you don’t get is a cellular version.

That means no independent SIM or mobile-data connection when you’re away from Wi-Fi.

You’ll need to tether from your phone or find another network.

For something marketed so heavily around portable gaming, an optional 5G version would have been nice.

💦 IP54 Protection

The Astra 2 carries an IP54 rating.

That gives it some protection against dust and splashes, but this is absolutely not something we’d recommend treating like a waterproof device.

Take it travelling.

Take it to a hotel.

Take it backstage.

Take it to a festival campsite if you’re feeling brave.

Just don’t sit there gaming in a Welsh downpour wondering why your £600 tablet suddenly looks worried.

🎬 Films, Streaming & Everyday Use

Gaming might be the headline feature, but there’s absolutely no reason the Astra 2 can’t become your everyday entertainment tablet.

That OLED display is brilliant for Netflix, Disney+, YouTube and other streaming platforms.

The stereo speakers are decent.

Web browsing feels exceptionally responsive.

Social media flies.

And the compact dimensions make it far more pleasant to casually hold than many enormous productivity tablets.

Add a Bluetooth keyboard and it can handle emails, documents and light productivity work too.

Would we choose it over an iPad Pro or Galaxy Tab primarily for serious office productivity?

Probably not.

Would we choose it over them specifically for Android gaming?

Now things become considerably more interesting.

🎪 Could You Use The Astra 2 At A Festival?

Actually, yes.

And this is where the compact size becomes genuinely useful.

At 363g, it’s light enough to disappear into a backpack without taking up half your luggage allowance.

The large battery means it could work nicely as an entertainment device back at the hotel, campsite or press area.

Photographers could use it for reviewing images, transferring certain files through suitable USB-C hardware, checking schedules or handling social-media updates.

The bright OLED display helps when working outdoors too.

However, IP54 protection means we’d still be extremely cautious around heavy rain.

And because there’s no cellular version, you’ll be relying on festival Wi-Fi or smartphone tethering.

So yes — useful.

Just maybe don’t wave it around halfway through a muddy Download Festival downpour.

🆚 Who Is The REDMAGIC Astra 2 For?

This isn’t necessarily the tablet we’d recommend to somebody who wants one device primarily for spreadsheets, university work and Microsoft Office.

It isn’t designed to replace a professional drawing tablet.

And photographers aren’t going to buy one for that 13MP rear camera.

The Astra 2 exists for one audience above everything else:

gamers.

Especially gamers who want something larger than a smartphone but smaller and lighter than a traditional tablet.

Mobile gamers.

Emulation enthusiasts.

Cloud-gaming fans.

People using game-streaming services.

Anyone regularly playing demanding Android games.

And anybody who thinks visible liquid cooling in a tablet sounds completely unnecessary yet extremely cool.

Basically, our sort of people.

🏆 The Riff Report Verdict

The REDMAGIC Astra 2 is ridiculous.

And we mean that affectionately.

Nobody desperately needed a 185Hz OLED Android tablet with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 power, dedicated gaming silicon, dual USB-C ports, haptic motors and a visible liquid-cooling system.

But REDMAGIC built one anyway.

And the result is one of the most exciting dedicated Android gaming tablets around.

Performance is monstrous.

The screen is gorgeous.

The compact 9.06-inch size genuinely makes sense.

Battery life is strong.

Charging is fast.

And the cooling technology helps transform all that theoretical processing power into sustained gaming performance rather than a spectacular benchmark followed by thermal throttling.

There are compromises.

The cameras are ordinary.

The software isn’t as polished as the very best Android interfaces.

There’s no cellular option.

IP54 protection could be stronger.

And having to potentially budget separately for a suitable fast charger on a £599 tablet is something buyers need to remember.

But none of those issues change what the Astra 2 does brilliantly.

This is a tablet built for gamers, with precisely the sort of excessive engineering that makes enthusiast technology fun.

The £599 12GB/256GB model represents the cheapest entry into the Astra 2 world, but our money would probably go towards the £679 16GB/512GB version.

For just £80 more, doubling the storage makes an awful lot of sense for a gaming device you could realistically keep for several years.

For somebody wanting an everyday productivity tablet, there are safer choices.

For someone wanting a portable Android gaming monster?

The Astra 2 is very difficult to ignore.

It might look like somebody shrunk a water-cooled gaming PC and squashed it into a tablet.

Frankly, that’s part of the appeal.

⭐ The Riff Report Score: 9/10

💧 Cooling: 9.5/10
🎮 Gaming Performance: 10/10
📱 Display: 9.5/10
🔋 Battery: 9/10
🔊 Audio: 8.5/10
🛠️ Build & Design: 9/10
🤖 Software: 7.5/10
📸 Cameras: 6/10
💷 Value: 8.5/10

💰 Riff Report Buying Recommendation

Best Value: 12GB + 256GB – £599

Best Overall: 16GB + 512GB – £679

Upgrade Cost: £80

With official fast charger purchased separately: approximately £623.90–£703.90

If you’re a casual gamer, grab the £599 version.

If you’re buying the Astra 2 as your dedicated gaming machine, spend the extra £80 and get the 512GB model.

Your future game library will thank you.

🤘 Final Word

The REDMAGIC Astra 2 takes Android tablet gaming, straps a Snapdragon rocket to the back, pumps liquid cooling through its veins and turns everything up to eleven.

At £599, it isn’t an impulse buy.

At £679 for the 16GB/512GB model, it isn’t cheap either.

But considering the performance, OLED display, cooling technology, storage and gaming-focused hardware packed inside, there’s an awful lot of tablet here for the money.

Utterly excessive. Completely unnecessary. Bloody brilliant. 💧🔥🎮🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
