King Diamond has opened up about his split with longtime guitarist Andy La Rocque, revealing that the end of their four-decade musical partnership had been “coming for a while”.
This is one of those metal line-up changes that still feels slightly strange to type.
After more than 40 years together, King Diamond and guitarist Andy La Rocque officially went their separate ways in July 2026, ending one of heavy metal’s longest-running and most recognisable creative partnerships.
Now King Diamond has spoken more openly about what led to the split, explaining that it wasn’t the result of one massive argument, one dramatic incident or some spectacular backstage explosion.
Instead, the two had simply been heading in different directions for some time.
🎸 ‘Something Has To Change’
Speaking about the decision, King explained that he and Andy remain friends and that there is no major animosity between them.
He described the split as something gradual, with the relationship moving in different directions until eventually it became obvious that a change was needed.
And honestly, after more than four decades working together, that probably makes more sense than some giant soap-opera bust-up.
Sometimes people simply reach a different point in their lives.
Different priorities.
Different ideas.
Different directions.
Even in heavy metal.
🤘 No Big Falling-Out
King also made it clear that the split wasn’t caused by Andy’s other musical activities.
La Rocque has been working with Lex Legion, but King stressed that the guitarist’s involvement with that project had nothing to do with his departure from King Diamond.
That should hopefully put a few rumours to bed.
Because naturally, the second a guitarist leaves a major band, the internet immediately turns into an episode of Metal Detective.
People start analysing Instagram follows.
Old interviews suddenly become evidence.
Somebody notices that a band member didn’t use enough emojis in a birthday post.
Before long, Dave from Wolverhampton has solved the entire thing from his sofa.
In reality, King says the decision had simply been building gradually.
💀 More Than Four Decades Together
Andy La Rocque joined King Diamond in the mid-1980s and became an absolutely crucial part of the band’s sound.
His guitar work helped shape some of the most important albums in King Diamond’s catalogue, combining razor-sharp metal riffing with melodic lead work and instantly recognisable solos.
From Fatal Portrait and Abigail through Them, Conspiracy and beyond, La Rocque became one of the defining musical voices behind the King Diamond sound.
And that partnership lasted for an astonishing 41 years.
Forty-one.
Some bands can’t survive one rehearsal without arguing over who gets the extension lead.
King and Andy managed four bloody decades.
That makes the end of their working relationship genuinely significant.
🔥 Gus G Steps Into The Role
Following La Rocque’s departure, King Diamond announced that Gus G would be joining the band.
And that’s not exactly a lightweight replacement.
The Greek guitarist is best known for leading Firewind and for his previous stint alongside Ozzy Osbourne, where he had the frankly terrifying job of following guitarists including Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde.
No pressure, then.
Gus is a ridiculously accomplished player and should bring a slightly different flavour to the King Diamond machine while still possessing more than enough technical firepower for the job.
But even with a guitarist of that calibre stepping in, Andy’s departure represents the end of a massive era.
🎶 Andy La Rocque Moves Forward With Lex Legion
For Andy, the future now includes Lex Legion, his newer musical project alongside his continued production and studio work.
Outside King Diamond, La Rocque has spent years establishing himself as a respected producer and engineer through Sonic Train Studios.
So retirement clearly isn’t on the agenda.
Far from it.
This feels less like somebody disappearing from music and more like two veteran musicians simply choosing different roads after spending an extraordinary amount of time travelling the same one.
And that’s probably the healthiest way to look at it.
👑 King Diamond Remains Focused On The Future
King Diamond, meanwhile, continues moving forward with his own projects.
Between the King Diamond band and Mercyful Fate, the legendary frontman remains one of the most important figures in traditional heavy metal.
That voice.
That face paint.
Those horror stories.
That stage set which usually looks like Dracula has been given an unlimited production budget.
Nobody does theatrical metal quite like King Diamond.
And with Gus G now entering the picture, the next chapter should be fascinating to watch.
🖤 An End Of An Era Without The Drama
Perhaps the nicest part of this whole situation is that, despite the importance of the split, there doesn’t appear to be some horrible feud underneath it.
King has said that the friendship between himself and Andy remains.
That matters.
After 41 years of albums, tours, rehearsals, studio sessions, airports, buses, hotels and probably enough backstage catering to feed a small nation, it would have been pretty grim to see everything end in bitterness.
Instead, both sides appear to be moving forward with respect for everything they achieved together.
And they achieved a hell of a lot.
🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
Andy La Rocque leaving King Diamond is going to take some getting used to.
For generations of fans, his guitar playing has been woven directly into the fabric of the band.
You hear those solos and you know exactly who it is.
But sometimes even the longest-running musical partnerships eventually reach their natural conclusion.
And if King Diamond’s comments are anything to go by, this one didn’t explode overnight.
It simply reached a point where both sides needed something different.
That doesn’t erase more than four decades of incredible music.
It doesn’t diminish the albums.
And it certainly doesn’t diminish Andy La Rocque’s place in heavy metal history.
Now we get two new chapters.
Andy with Lex Legion.
King Diamond with Gus G.
Different roads.
Same massive legacy.
And somewhere in the distance, there’s still a ridiculously high-pitched scream echoing through the night.
Long live the King. 👑💀🤘
