Two heavy metal legends. Two brutal cancer battles. And one conversation that gave Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine something incredibly important when he needed it most β€” hope.

There are friendships in heavy metal, and then there are moments where the music, the tours and all the backstage madness suddenly become completely irrelevant.

Dave Mustaine has revealed that Iron Maiden legend Bruce Dickinson offered him advice and encouragement during his battle with cancer β€” words that helped give the Megadeth mastermind hope during one of the toughest periods of his life.

And if there was ever somebody who understood what Mustaine was facing, it was Bruce.

🎀 β€œHe Gave Me Hope”

Mustaine was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2019, forcing Megadeth to cancel a number of scheduled shows while the frontman underwent treatment.

For a musician whose career has revolved around that unmistakable voice, standing on stages around the world and leading one of thrash metal’s most influential bands, the diagnosis was understandably enormous.

But Mustaine wasn’t facing the situation without support.

Among those who reached out was Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson, who had previously fought his own battle with cancer after being diagnosed with a tumour at the back of his tongue in 2014.

Dickinson underwent treatment before being given the all-clear β€” eventually returning to the stage and continuing to front Iron Maiden like the absolute human air-raid siren he is.

Speaking about Dickinson’s support, Mustaine has recalled receiving advice from the Maiden singer and, perhaps most importantly, being given hope that he could come through the other side.

That’s heavy metal brotherhood right there. ❀️🀘

πŸ–€ Bruce Knew Exactly What Mustaine Was Facing

There aren’t many people who could truly understand Mustaine’s situation.

Bruce Dickinson could.

Both men had spent decades relying on their voices. Both fronted bands responsible for some of the biggest records and concerts in heavy metal history. And both suddenly found themselves fighting cancer in areas directly connected with their ability to sing.

For Mustaine, speaking with somebody who had already walked that road must have carried enormous weight.

This wasn’t somebody offering generic encouragement from the sidelines.

This was Bruce bloody Dickinson saying, essentially:

I’ve been there. I’ve fought it. I’ve come back. You can do it too.

Sometimes that’s exactly what you need to hear.

πŸ”₯ Mustaine Fought Back

Thankfully, Mustaine’s story would also become one of survival.

After undergoing treatment, the Megadeth frontman announced during a concert in London in early 2020 that he was cancer-free.

The crowd response?

Exactly what you’d expect.

Absolute scenes. 🀘

Mustaine returned to doing what Dave Mustaine does best β€” standing onstage with a guitar strapped around him and unleashing thrash metal like the previous four decades hadn’t happened.

Megadeth would continue moving forward, releasing new music and returning to stages around the world.

Cancer had given Mustaine one hell of a fight.

But it hadn’t taken him away from metal.

βš”οΈ Dickinson’s Own Incredible Comeback

Dickinson’s recovery remains equally remarkable.

After completing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the Iron Maiden frontman was declared cancer-free in 2015.

And because apparently normal human recovery rules don’t apply to Bruce Dickinson, he eventually returned to the road with Maiden and continued belting out some of the most demanding songs in heavy metal.

We’re talking β€œRun to the Hills”, β€œThe Trooper”, β€œHallowed Be Thy Name” and countless other songs that would have most of us requiring oxygen after the first chorus.

Bruce?

Running around stages, climbing scenery and generally behaving like somebody forgot to tell him he’s mortal.

Standard Maiden behaviour, really. πŸ˜‚πŸ€˜

🀘 More Than Just Metal Legends

It’s easy to look at Dave Mustaine and Bruce Dickinson simply as icons.

Mustaine helped shape thrash metal through Megadeth and, before that, played an important role in the earliest days of Metallica.

Dickinson helped Iron Maiden become one of the biggest heavy metal bands the planet has ever seen.

Between them are decades of albums, enormous tours, festival headline performances and songs that have soundtracked generations of metalheads.

But stories like this remind you that underneath all of that, they’re still people.

When Mustaine was facing something terrifying, Dickinson had experience he could share.

He reached out.

He offered advice.

And he gave another metal legend hope.

Sometimes the biggest moments in rock β€˜n’ roll don’t happen underneath pyro in front of 80,000 people.

Sometimes they’re simply one person telling another:

You can get through this.

❀️ The Metal Community Looks After Its Own

Heavy metal has always had that strange contradiction at its heart.

The music can sound absolutely terrifying β€” distorted guitars, screaming vocals, skulls everywhere and enough black T-shirts to blot out the sun.

But the community surrounding it can be one of the most supportive going.

We’ve seen it in festival fields.

We’ve seen it at gigs.

We’ve seen it when bands rally around musicians going through difficult times.

And we’ve seen it here between two giants of the genre.

Bruce Dickinson survived cancer.

Dave Mustaine survived cancer.

And when Mustaine needed some encouragement from somebody who truly understood what he was going through, Bruce was there.

That’s not just heavy metal history.

That’s heavy metal family. 🀘❀️

🎸 The Riff Report

Two legends still standing, still making noise and still proving that sometimes the strongest thing the metal community can give somebody isn’t another massive riff.

It’s hope.

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies. πŸ‰πŸ€˜
