One songwriter. Two bands. A mountain of massive tunes. And one argument guaranteed to get considerably louder after the third pint. 🍺🔥

There are certain debates that rock fans simply cannot resist.

Beatles or Stones?

Metallica or Megadeth?

Original Guns N’ Roses or the reunion years?

And then there’s this absolute pub-table grenade:

Oasis or Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds — which is actually better?

Yeah. We’re going there, butt. 😈

On one side you’ve got Oasis, one of the biggest British rock bands of all time — a swaggering Mancunian monster responsible for enormous albums, generation-defining songs, legendary gigs, spectacular arguments and enough Gallagher insults to fill several encyclopaedias.

On the other you’ve got Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, the band Noel formed after Oasis imploded in 2009, giving him the freedom to explore different sounds without having Liam Gallagher standing ten feet away looking like he might launch a tambourine at him.

Both have Noel’s songwriting DNA running straight through them.

But they’re very different beasts.

So grab a pint, stick Definitely Maybe on the stereo and prepare for trouble.

It’s time for The Riff Report Rock ’n’ Roll Showdown. 🥊🎸

🔥 ROUND ONE: THE SONGS

This is where Oasis immediately arrive swinging.

Just look at the ammunition:

🎵 Live Forever
🎵 Supersonic
🎵 Rock ’n’ Roll Star
🎵 Cigarettes & Alcohol
🎵 Slide Away
🎵 Some Might Say
🎵 Morning Glory
🎵 Wonderwall
🎵 Don’t Look Back in Anger
🎵 Champagne Supernova
🎵 Acquiesce
🎵 The Masterplan

And we’ve barely scratched the surface.

That’s the ridiculous thing about Oasis.

Some bands would happily build an entire career around songs Oasis were sticking on B-sides.

The Masterplan, Acquiesce, Half the World Away, Talk Tonight and Rockin’ Chair weren’t initially treated like precious lead singles.

Absolutely bonkers.

Noel Gallagher was writing songs during that period like somebody had accidentally activated a cheat code.

High Flying Birds have produced plenty of cracking material too.

If I Had a Gun… remains one of Noel’s finest post-Oasis songs.

AKA… What a Life! is massive.

Everybody’s on the Run is beautifully ambitious.

Dead in the Water strips everything back and demonstrates just how powerful Noel can be with little more than a voice and guitar.

Then you’ve got tracks including Easy Now, We’re on Our Way Now and the more experimental material that demonstrated Noel wasn’t interested in simply producing Oasis Mark II.

But when we’re talking sheer quantity of songs capable of making an entire field scream every word?

There’s only one winner.

🏆 ROUND ONE: OASIS

🎤 ROUND TWO: THE VOCALS

And here comes the Liam-shaped elephant crashing through the wall.

Noel Gallagher is a good singer.

At times he’s a very good singer.

Some Oasis songs actually benefited enormously from Noel taking lead vocals. Don’t Look Back in Anger being the rather obvious example.

His voice has also matured beautifully.

High Flying Birds material often suits Noel perfectly because it’s written around his range and delivery.

But Liam Gallagher in his prime?

Different animal entirely.

That voice was Oasis.

The sneer.

The nasal attack.

The elongated vowels.

The attitude.

Liam could make the simplest lyric sound like somebody had just spray-painted it across the side of Buckingham Palace.

You could write Noel’s songs down on paper and appreciate them as songwriting.

Then Liam sang them and suddenly they became Oasis songs.

That’s an enormous distinction.

Noel supplied the ammunition.

Liam fired the bloody cannon.

🏆 ROUND TWO: OASIS

🎼 ROUND THREE: MUSICAL EXPERIMENTATION

Now High Flying Birds start fighting back.

One criticism occasionally thrown at Oasis was that they knew exactly what they were good at and weren’t always interested in wandering too far away from it.

Big guitars.

Big choruses.

Big melodies.

Big attitude.

Job done.

And when you’re that bloody good at it, fair enough.

With High Flying Birds, however, Noel gave himself considerably more room to explore.

Orchestration.

Electronics.

Psychedelia.

Dance influences.

Different production techniques.

Less dependence on enormous walls of guitar.

Albums such as Who Built the Moon? demonstrated that Noel wasn’t interested in spending the rest of his career recreating Morning Glory.

And fair play.

That willingness to mess around with the formula makes High Flying Birds fascinating.

You might not love every experiment, but Noel has earned the right to wander into the musical shed, start pressing buttons and see what explodes.

🏆 ROUND THREE: NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS

🍺 ROUND FOUR: THE ATTITUDE

Oh, come on.

Oasis.

Next question.

😂

There was something gloriously ridiculous about Oasis in the ’90s.

They didn’t behave like they wanted to become the biggest band in Britain.

They behaved like they already were.

Before they’d even properly conquered the world.

That confidence became part of the attraction.

Noel and Liam didn’t stroll politely onto the British music scene.

They kicked the door off its hinges, nicked the beer from the fridge and told everybody else their records were rubbish.

Subtle?

Absolutely not.

Entertaining?

Oh yes.

High Flying Birds are understandably more mature.

Noel has nothing left to prove.

But Oasis had danger around them.

Arguments.

Walkouts.

Cancelled appearances.

Brotherly warfare.

Interviews where you genuinely didn’t know what somebody might say next.

It was chaos.

Beautiful, ridiculous rock ’n’ roll chaos.

🏆 ROUND FOUR: OASIS

🎸 ROUND FIVE: MUSICIANSHIP

This one gets interesting.

Oasis were never supposed to be Dream Theater.

Nobody was standing at Knebworth thinking:

“Interesting use of polymeter there, Liam.”

😂

Oasis were about impact.

Bonehead’s guitar helped create that enormous wall of sound during the early years, while Noel’s ear for melody and arrangement transformed relatively straightforward musical ingredients into something massive.

But High Flying Birds allow Noel’s musical instincts considerably more breathing room.

Strings.

Keyboards.

Brass.

Acoustic arrangements.

Layered production.

Different textures.

More complicated sonic ideas.

It’s Noel operating with a much larger musical toolbox.

So if we’re judging purely on musicianship and willingness to explore arrangements…

🏆 ROUND FIVE: NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS

🏟️ ROUND SIX: LIVE SHOWS

High Flying Birds are an excellent live band.

No argument.

Noel has become an experienced frontman and can comfortably command enormous venues.

And there’s an added weapon.

He can play High Flying Birds material and then casually unleash Oasis songs.

That’s basically using cheat codes.

But peak Oasis?

Different universe.

Maine Road.

Earls Court.

Knebworth.

Those performances weren’t simply concerts.

They became pieces of British cultural history.

Knebworth 1996 remains one of the defining moments of the entire Britpop era.

The scale of Oasis at their peak is difficult to comprehend unless you lived through it.

Millions wanted tickets.

Entire pubs sang the songs.

Kids bought guitars because of them.

People copied Liam’s haircut.

Okay, perhaps we shouldn’t celebrate everything.

😂

But when thousands upon thousands of people sing Don’t Look Back in Anger or Live Forever together, something happens.

It stops being a song.

It becomes communal.

🏆 ROUND SIX: OASIS

✍️ ROUND SEVEN: SONGWRITING

Now we’re getting philosophical.

Because technically…

Noel wins either way.

😂

He wrote the majority of the songs that established Oasis as giants.

Then he went away and built another successful career with High Flying Birds.

That’s pretty ridiculous when you think about it.

But the songwriting has changed.

Young Noel wrote with astonishing directness.

Hope.

Escape.

Dreams.

Friendship.

Frustration.

Wanting something bigger than the life immediately around you.

That’s why songs like Live Forever connected so deeply.

Older Noel is more reflective.

More sophisticated.

Sometimes darker.

Often more adventurous.

High Flying Birds demonstrate how Noel developed as a songwriter rather than simply trying to relive 1995 forever.

So which is better?

For emotional immediacy?

Oasis-era Noel.

For maturity and experimentation?

High Flying Birds Noel.

🤝 ROUND SEVEN: DRAW

💿 ROUND EIGHT: THE ALBUMS

This is where Oasis bring out the nuclear weapons.

Definitely Maybe

One of the greatest debut albums in British rock history.

Then…

(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?

An album absolutely stuffed with songs that became cultural landmarks.

That’s an outrageous opening two-album combination.

Be Here Now remains one of rock’s most fascinating examples of excess turned up until the knob snapped off.

Later albums contain plenty of gems too, particularly as Oasis gradually became more collaborative and other members contributed songs.

High Flying Birds have produced a strong, varied catalogue, and Noel’s solo-era consistency deserves serious respect.

But beating those first two Oasis albums?

That’s like entering a pub arm-wrestling competition and discovering your opponent is a hydraulic press.

🏆 ROUND EIGHT: OASIS

🌍 ROUND NINE: CULTURAL IMPACT

This isn’t particularly close.

Oasis became bigger than music.

Haircuts.

Parkas.

Football terraces.

Tabloid headlines.

Britpop.

Cool Britannia.

Brotherly arguments.

Knebworth.

Manchester.

Working-class aspiration.

The songs became part of British life.

Even people who claim they hate Oasis somehow know the chorus to Wonderwall.

Go figure.

High Flying Birds are hugely successful, but they’re not a cultural phenomenon on that scale.

Few bands ever are.

🏆 ROUND NINE: OASIS

🧠 ROUND TEN: CONSISTENCY

Here’s another point for High Flying Birds.

Oasis were capable of astonishing highs, but the career wasn’t exactly smooth sailing.

Line-up changes.

Arguments.

Changing musical fashions.

Albums receiving wildly different reactions.

And eventually…

Paris.

  1. 2009.

Goodnight Vienna.

High Flying Birds have been considerably more stable.

No Gallagher sibling warfare.

No wondering whether the guitarist and singer will still technically be in the same band by teatime.

No backstage argument threatening to derail the whole thing.

Well…

Probably fewer, anyway.

😂

🏆 ROUND TEN: NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS

🥊 THE RIFF REPORT SCORECARD

After ten rounds, here’s how our completely scientific, definitely-not-going-to-start-an-argument scoring looks:

Category

Winner

Songs

🔥 Oasis

Vocals

🔥 Oasis

Experimentation

🦅 High Flying Birds

Attitude

🔥 Oasis

Musicianship

🦅 High Flying Birds

Live Shows

🔥 Oasis

Songwriting

🤝 Draw

Albums

🔥 Oasis

Cultural Impact

🔥 Oasis

Consistency

🦅 High Flying Birds

And therefore…

🏆 THE RIFF REPORT WINNER: OASIS

High Flying Birds demonstrate what a brilliant songwriter and musician Noel Gallagher is.

But Oasis demonstrate what happens when that songwriting is combined with the right singer, right musicians, right attitude, right moment and just enough chaos to make the entire thing dangerous.

That’s the magic ingredient.

You can recreate the chords.

You can recreate the guitar tones.

You can even stick the parka back on.

But recreating that chemistry?

Different story.

Noel wrote extraordinary songs.

Liam gave them swagger.

The band gave them muscle.

And the audience turned them into anthems.

🦅 BUT DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE HIGH FLYING BIRDS

This shouldn’t become an exercise in dismissing Noel’s post-Oasis career.

Far from it.

High Flying Birds proved something important.

Noel Gallagher didn’t need Oasis to continue making great music.

He could easily have spent decades touring the old songs.

Instead, he kept writing.

Kept experimenting.

Kept changing things.

And perhaps most importantly, demonstrated there was considerably more to his musical personality than enormous distorted guitars and Beatles references.

High Flying Birds gave us the older Noel Gallagher.

Oasis captured the younger one.

And there’s room for both.

🎤 THE LIAM FACTOR

Ultimately, however, there’s one thing High Flying Birds can never possess.

Liam Gallagher.

Whatever you think of him, his voice and personality were fundamental to Oasis.

That combination of Noel’s songwriting and Liam’s delivery created something neither could completely replicate alone.

It’s one of those classic rock partnerships where the tension may have eventually destroyed the band…

…but the tension was probably also part of what made the band so bloody exciting in the first place.

Noel without Liam can make beautiful music.

Liam without Noel can deliver brilliant rock ’n’ roll.

But Noel + Liam + Oasis?

That’s where the lightning struck.

⚡

🍺 FINAL VERDICT

So which band is better?

For experimentation, maturity and consistency:

🦅 NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS

But for songs, albums, atmosphere, cultural importance, attitude, gigs and pure rock ’n’ roll magic:

🔥 OASIS

And that’s why Oasis take The Riff Report crown.

Not because High Flying Birds aren’t brilliant.

They are.

But Oasis became something much bigger than the musicians standing on stage.

They became the soundtrack to a generation.

They made people pick up guitars.

They made entire fields sing.

They produced songs that are still being screamed in pubs, stadiums, bedrooms and festival campsites decades later.

And whenever those opening chords kick in, thousands of people suddenly become one enormous, slightly drunk backing vocalist.

That’s difficult to beat, mun. 🍺😂

🎸 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds: 🎸🎸🎸🎸½

Oasis: 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Winner: OASIS 🏆🔥

But now it’s over to you…

Oasis or Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds?

Which has the better albums? Which would you rather see live? And — here’s the dangerous one — has Noel written anything with High Flying Birds that’s better than his greatest Oasis songs?

Get the arguments going.

Keep it friendly.

And somebody get another round in. 🍺🤘

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. 🐉🎸

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
