๐Ÿบ WETHERSPOONS BANS LOUD PHONE MUSIC AND SPEAKER CALLS ACROSS ITS PUBS ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ”‡

The pub giant is cracking down on one of modern Britainโ€™s most irritating habits โ€” and plenty of punters will probably be raising a pint to this one.

There are certain sounds you expect when you walk into a British pub.

๐Ÿบ Glasses clinking.

๐Ÿ˜‚ Someone laughing far too loudly three tables away.

โšฝ A bloke passionately explaining why his football clubโ€™s manager needs sacking immediately.

๐Ÿฅฉ Someone asking where their mixed grill has got to.

What you donโ€™t necessarily want is somebody sitting beside you watching TikTok at full volume or conducting a 20-minute FaceTime conversation through their phoneโ€™s loudspeaker.

And now Wetherspoons has apparently had enough.

The pub giant has introduced new rules across its pubs aimed at stopping customers from playing music, videos or phone calls loudly through their devices.

In other wordsโ€ฆ

HEADPHONES IN, BUTT. ๐ŸŽง

๐Ÿ“ฑ WHAT HAS WETHERSPOONS ACTUALLY BANNED?

The new policy targets customers using the loudspeakers on mobile phones and tablets inside Wetherspoons pubs.

Customers are being asked to keep devices on silent or use headphones or earphones when listening to audio.

That means no blasting Spotify across the table.

No TikTok videos rattling away at full volume.

No YouTube.

No watching Netflix without headphones.

And no speakerphone conversation where the entire pub gets unwillingly introduced to your Auntie Linda.

The rule has reportedly been introduced across 792 Wetherspoons pubs, following complaints from customers about disruptive noise.

Signs are also being introduced reminding customers of the policy.

And frankly, weโ€™re amazed weโ€™ve reached the stage where a pub needs a sign saying:

โ€œPlease donโ€™t make everyone else listen to your phone.โ€

But here we are, mun. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿป WHY WETHERSPOONS IS DOING IT

Wetherspoons has traditionally been a little different from many other major pub chains.

Most of its pubs donโ€™t blast background music through speakers.

You can actually sit down, have a pint and โ€” brace yourselves for this revolutionary concept โ€” talk to the people youโ€™re drinking with.

Only a relatively small number of its pubs operating under the Lloyds format traditionally feature music.

Wetherspoons chairman Sir Tim Martin has spoken about wanting the companyโ€™s pubs to remain relatively peaceful places where customers can enjoy themselves without unnecessary noise.

And increasingly, one particular type of noise appears to be winding customers up:

phones on loudspeaker.

Weโ€™ve all experienced it.

Youโ€™re sitting somewhere peacefully and suddenlyโ€ฆ

DING DING DING.

TikTok.

Then another TikTok.

Then Instagram.

Then someoneโ€™s mate sends them a video.

Then theyโ€™re having a FaceTime conversation with somebody who appears to be standing inside a wind tunnel.

Five minutes later, you somehow know their entire family history despite never meeting them.

๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿค˜ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT: WEโ€™RE WITH WETHERSPOONS ON THIS ONE

Now, weโ€™re The Riff Report.

We literally spend our lives around LOUD THINGS.

Marshall stacks?

Love โ€™em.

Double bass drums?

Turn them up.

Festival PA systems powerful enough to rearrange your internal organs?

Absolutely lush.

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

But somebody watching 47 consecutive TikToks through a tiny phone speaker while youโ€™re trying to eat a burger?

Thatโ€™s a different kind of noise entirely.

Thereโ€™s a time and place for everything.

At Download Festival, if you want to blast Slipknot at ridiculous volume from your campsite at 2am, youโ€™re probably going to find another 300 people joining in.

But in your local Spoons while someone three feet away is trying to enjoy a pint?

Stick the headphones in, butt.

๐ŸŽง๐Ÿบ

๐Ÿ“ฑ ITโ€™S BECOME A BIGGER SOCIAL PROBLEM

Wetherspoons isnโ€™t operating in a vacuum here.

Public frustration around people playing audio through mobile phone speakers has been growing considerably.

Anyone regularly using buses, trains, cafรฉs, waiting rooms or pubs will probably recognise the situation.

Someone decides that headphones are apparently optional and suddenly everyone within twenty metres gets to experience their entertainment choices.

And thereโ€™s an important difference between normal background noise and forcing your personal entertainment into somebody elseโ€™s space.

A pub is naturally noisy.

People laugh.

People shout.

Glasses clatter.

Football supporters occasionally experience complete emotional breakdowns over VAR.

Thatโ€™s all part of pub life.

But sitting next to somebody blasting videos through a smartphone speaker feels different because itโ€™s completely avoidable.

Headphones exist.

Earbuds exist.

Silent mode exists.

Use them.

Tidy. Problem solved. ๐Ÿบ

๐Ÿ‘“ AND WETHERSPOONS HAS ALSO BEEN LOOKING AT SMART GLASSES

Interestingly, this isnโ€™t the only technology-related issue Wetherspoons has tackled recently.

The chain has also taken a stance over the use of camera-equipped smart glasses, including devices capable of discreetly recording video.

The concern there is different: privacy.

Wetherspoonsโ€™ existing approach is that customers and employees shouldnโ€™t be filmed without their permission, and wearable cameras create an obvious headache because people may not immediately realise theyโ€™re being recorded.

So weโ€™ve now reached a fascinating point in British pub history.

Once upon a time the rules were basically:

No fighting.

No underage drinking.

Last orders at the bar.

Now weโ€™re adding:

STOP FILMING PEOPLE WITH YOUR GLASSES AND TURN YOUR BLOODY TIKTOK DOWN.

Welcome to 2026, everyone. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿบ

๐Ÿค” BUT HOW WILL THE BAN ACTUALLY WORK?

This is probably the biggest question.

Wetherspoons can put signs up and establish the rule, but enforcement will ultimately come down to staff dealing with individual situations.

And thatโ€™s where things could potentially become awkward.

Imagine working behind the bar and having to walk over to someone and say:

โ€œExcuse me mate, could you turn your phone down please?โ€

Most people will probably apologise and do it.

Job done.

But anyone who has ever worked in hospitality knows thereโ€™s always that one customer.

The bloke who suddenly wants a Supreme Court hearing because somebody asked him to stop blasting Facebook videos across table 17.

Hopefully common sense wins.

Because pub staff already have enough to deal with without becoming Britainโ€™s Mobile Phone Volume Police.

๐Ÿบ COULD OTHER PUB CHAINS FOLLOW?

This could be where things get interesting.

If customers respond positively to the Wetherspoons policy, thereโ€™s every chance similar rules could become increasingly common elsewhere.

Not just pubs either.

Restaurants.

Cafรฉs.

Cinemas.

Public transport.

Waiting rooms.

Hotels.

Maybe society is slowly rediscovering something we used to callโ€ฆ

consideration for everyone else.

Radical concept, we know. ๐Ÿ˜‚

And the public mood certainly appears sympathetic to the idea of tackling loudspeaker use.

For many people, the issue isnโ€™t smartphones themselves.

Nobody cares if youโ€™re scrolling Facebook.

Nobody cares if youโ€™re checking Instagram.

Nobody cares if youโ€™re watching YouTube.

Just donโ€™t make everyone else watch it with you.

๐ŸŽธ PUBS SHOULD STILL SOUND LIKE PUBS

We definitely donโ€™t want completely silent pubs.

Absolutely not.

Give us laughter.

Give us ridiculous conversations.

Give us football arguments.

Give us somebody telling a story that gets more unbelievable every time they tell it.

Give us the bloke at the bar whoโ€™s somehow been drinking there since approximately 1974.

Thatโ€™s what pubs are about.

Theyโ€™re social spaces.

And thatโ€™s arguably exactly why Wetherspoons is introducing this policy.

Because a pub full of people talking together is completely different from a pub full of people staring at phones while competing TikTok videos blast from six different tables.

One feels like a pub.

The other feels like youโ€™ve accidentally walked into the worldโ€™s worst electronics shop.

๐Ÿป SOโ€ฆ GOOD MOVE OR PUB KILLJOY?

For us?

Good move.

Weโ€™re hardly advocates of silence here at The Riff Report โ€” our entire existence revolves around guitars being played at irresponsible volumes.

But thereโ€™s a difference between good noise and annoying noise.

A Les Paul through a Marshall stack?

Good noise. ๐Ÿค˜

A festival crowd screaming the chorus to their favourite song?

VERY good noise. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Someone playing a Facebook Reel through a cracked iPhone speaker while youโ€™re trying to demolish a curry and a pint?

Straight to headphone jail. ๐Ÿšจ๐ŸŽง

So next time youโ€™re sitting in Wetherspoons and fancy watching a few videosโ€ฆ

Grab the headphones.

Order yourself a pint.

And let everyone else enjoy theirs.

Because apparently basic pub etiquette now needs an official policy.

Only in Britain, mun. ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿบ WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Is Wetherspoons right to crack down on customers playing music, videos and phone calls through loudspeakers?

Or should people be allowed to use their phones however they like in the pub?

Let us know โ€” because we reckon this one could divide a few beer gardens.

๐Ÿค˜ The Riff Report โ€” Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud.

Although apparently not through your phone speaker in Wetherspoons. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿบ
