Three frontmen. Three completely different eras. One absolutely enormous heavy metal legacy.

But when it comes to throwing around the word “legendary”, former Iron Maiden vocalist Blaze Bayley reckons there’s one singer who stands apart from the rest.

And no, he’s not talking about Bruce Dickinson.

He’s talking about Paul Di’Anno. 🤘🔥

Yep, mun. Somewhere in the distance, you can already hear thousands of Maiden fans cracking their knuckles and preparing essays in the comments section.

Bayley — who fronted Iron Maiden during one of the most fascinating and divisive periods in the band’s history — has heaped praise on the late Di’Anno and suggested that the original Maiden singer occupies a position nobody else can really claim.

For Blaze, Di’Anno wasn’t simply a former Iron Maiden vocalist.

He was legendary.

And when you look back at those first two Maiden records, the sweaty clubs, punk attitude and sheer danger surrounding the band’s early years, you can understand exactly where he’s coming from.

⚔️ Before Maiden Conquered the World, There Was Paul Di’Anno

When most casual music fans picture Iron Maiden, chances are they see Bruce Dickinson charging around enormous stages, waving flags, fencing with Eddie and generally behaving like someone has injected several gallons of aviation fuel directly into his bloodstream.

But before the arenas, aircraft, gigantic stage productions and global metal empire, Maiden were a very different beast.

They were raw.

They were hungry.

They were unpredictable.

And standing at the microphone was Paul Di’Anno.

Di’Anno became Maiden’s vocalist during the band’s formative years and appeared on their first two studio albums:

Iron Maiden — 1980
Killers — 1981

Two albums.

That’s it.

Yet those two records helped lay the foundations for one of the biggest heavy metal bands the planet has ever seen.

Not bad for a bloke whose tenure was over before Maiden had even released The Number of the Beast.

🔥 Di’Anno Brought Something Maiden Could Never Recreate

Paul Di’Anno didn’t sound like Bruce Dickinson.

And that’s precisely the point.

There was a roughness to Di’Anno’s delivery that perfectly suited early Maiden.

Songs such as “Prowler,” “Running Free,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Wrathchild,” “Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “Killers” had an urgency that felt closer to a street fight than a polished arena-metal spectacle.

His voice carried punk attitude, heavy metal aggression and that unmistakable sense that everything could fall apart at any second.

It was dangerous.

And early Iron Maiden needed dangerous.

Steve Harris already had the galloping bass lines, ambitious arrangements and vision that would eventually turn Maiden into giants.

Dave Murray supplied those beautifully fluid guitar leads.

The band were steadily developing the sound that would help define the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Di’Anno supplied something else entirely:

attitude.

He sounded like the bloke you absolutely did not want to accidentally spill a pint over.

🎤 Then Came Bruce Dickinson…

Of course, Maiden’s story changed dramatically after Di’Anno left.

Enter Bruce Dickinson.

And bloody hell, what an entrance.

Dickinson’s first Maiden album, The Number of the Beast, arrived in 1982 and helped launch the band towards another level entirely.

His huge operatic voice allowed Maiden to expand.

The songs became bigger.

The stages became bigger.

The audiences became bigger.

Eddie became approximately the size of a Travelodge.

Albums including Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son turned Iron Maiden into genuine global heavy metal royalty.

Dickinson would eventually become one of metal’s most recognisable vocalists.

Which makes Bayley’s apparent distinction between being an incredible singer and being a legendary Iron Maiden frontman particularly interesting.

Because Blaze knows better than most that Maiden’s singers shouldn’t necessarily be judged against each other.

They each represented different versions of the band.

⚡ Blaze Bayley Knows What It’s Like to Follow a Giant

Blaze Bayley stepped into perhaps one of the most intimidating jobs in heavy metal when Bruce Dickinson departed Maiden in the 1990s.

Imagine getting that phone call.

“Hello, Blaze. Fancy replacing Bruce Dickinson?”

No pressure, butt.

Bayley joined Maiden and appeared on two studio albums:

The X Factor — 1995
Virtual XI — 1998

His era remains one of the most fiercely debated chapters in Maiden history.

Some fans struggled with the darker direction and Bayley’s lower vocal register.

Others absolutely love those records.

And time has been particularly kind to parts of The X Factor, an album whose gloomy atmosphere feels increasingly fascinating when viewed outside the expectations surrounding Maiden at the time.

More importantly, Bayley contributed songs that survived long after his departure.

“Man on the Edge”, “Lord of the Flies”, “Futureal” and particularly “The Clansman” remain important pieces of Maiden history.

Bruce Dickinson himself would later sing several Bayley-era tracks live.

That alone tells you those songs had some serious legs.

🖤 Why Paul Di’Anno Became a Legend

There’s also something about Di’Anno’s story that naturally lends itself to the word legend.

His Maiden career was short.

His influence wasn’t.

He became forever associated with that early, hungry version of Iron Maiden before the band became an international institution.

It’s almost mythological.

Di’Anno represents Maiden before Maiden became MAIDEN.

Before the giant productions.

Before the stadiums.

Before Aces High.

Before Run to the Hills became compulsory listening for anyone purchasing their first denim battle jacket.

He was there when the foundations were still being poured.

And because his era ended so early, it has remained frozen in time.

Two albums documenting a band absolutely desperate to kick the doors down.

🕯️ Paul Di’Anno’s Death Made That Legacy Even More Poignant

Di’Anno died in October 2024 at the age of 66, bringing an extraordinary and frequently turbulent life to an end.

His later years were affected by serious health and mobility problems, but he continued performing and remained deeply connected to the music that had defined his career.

Following his death, tributes poured in from across the heavy metal world.

For generations of Maiden fans, Di’Anno wasn’t simply “the singer before Bruce”.

He was the voice of an entirely different Iron Maiden.

A dirtier one.

A nastier one.

A band still playing like they had something to prove.

That distinction matters.

🤘 Three Singers – Three Maiden Eras

Trying to rank Iron Maiden’s three major vocalists is almost pointless because each brought something completely different.

Paul Di’Anno brought punk aggression and street-level danger.

Bruce Dickinson brought enormous range, theatricality and the voice that helped Maiden conquer arenas around the world.

Blaze Bayley brought darkness, weight and a different emotional character during perhaps the band’s most challenging era.

They’re three pieces of one ridiculous story.

But Di’Anno will always hold one title nobody can take away from him.

He was first.

He was standing at the microphone when Iron Maiden were still fighting their way out of London’s pubs and clubs.

He sang on the band’s debut.

He sang on Killers.

And his voice remains permanently welded to songs that helped define the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

🎸 The Riff Report Verdict

Calling Paul Di’Anno Iron Maiden’s only “legendary” frontman is guaranteed to cause arguments.

Because let’s be fair — calling Bruce Dickinson anything less than a heavy metal legend is going to get you chased across a festival campsite by somebody wearing an Eddie backpatch.

But Blaze Bayley’s point speaks to something deeper.

Paul Di’Anno wasn’t legendary because he sold the most records.

He wasn’t legendary because he fronted Maiden for the longest.

He wasn’t legendary because his era produced the biggest tours.

He became legendary because he represented a moment that could never happen again.

Young Iron Maiden. Hungry Iron Maiden. Dangerous Iron Maiden.

A band standing at the beginning of something enormous without knowing quite how enormous it was about to become.

Bruce Dickinson became the voice of the Iron Maiden empire.

Blaze Bayley became the voice of Maiden’s strangest and darkest adventure.

But Paul Di’Anno?

He was the voice of the revolution before the world realised a revolution was happening.

And that, butt, is pretty bloody legendary. 🤘🔥

💬 OVER TO YOU, RIFFERS!

Is Blaze Bayley right?

Does Paul Di’Anno stand alone as Maiden’s truly legendary frontman, or is Bruce Dickinson simply impossible to overlook?

And while we’re opening this particular can of Eddie-shaped worms…

🥇 Di’Anno
🥈 Dickinson
🥉 Bayley

How are YOU ranking Iron Maiden’s three vocal eras?

Get the arguments going — respectfully, obviously. We’re metalheads, not animals.

Well…

not before the first pint, anyway. 🍺😂

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies. 🐉🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
