Before Enter Sandman conquered the planet, before Metallica became stadium-level monsters, and before Nothing Else Matters became compulsory pub-jukebox material, the band pulled one of the most gloriously ridiculous album launches in heavy metal history.

Today — 12 August 2026 — Metallica’s colossal self-titled fifth album, better known to absolutely everybody as The Black Album, celebrates its 35th anniversary.

Thirty-five years. 😳

Yeah. We’re old. Pass the ibuprofen and turn the bloody amp up.

Released on 12 August 1991, Metallica didn’t merely become another successful record in the band’s catalogue. It completely changed their trajectory.

But nine days before its release, Metallica had a slight problem.

They had made an album that sounded noticeably different.

So naturally, rather than quietly sending advance copies around and hoping for the best, they essentially hired Madison Square Garden, reportedly handed out around 19,000 free tickets, blasted the unreleased album through the arena’s sound system and waited to see what happened.

And somewhere among that enormous crowd?

James Hetfield himself.

Welcome to one of the greatest album-preview stories in metal history.

🖤 METALLICA WERE ABOUT TO CHANGE EVERYTHING

By 1991, Metallica were hardly struggling newcomers.

Their first four records —

  • Kill ’Em All (1983)
  • Ride the Lightning (1984)
  • Master of Puppets (1986)
  • …And Justice for All (1988)

— had helped reshape heavy metal.

They had become one of thrash metal’s defining forces, building a gigantic following without relying on the traditional pop-star machinery.

Then came album number five.

Working with producer Bob Rock, Metallica began stripping things back.

The songs became tighter.

The production became enormous.

The riffs were still heavier than a wet weekend in Merthyr, but there was suddenly more space, groove and melody.

And then there was Nothing Else Matters.

A bloody ballad.

From Metallica.

You can almost hear the denim-jacket brigade of 1991 dropping their pints.

🍺💥

🏟️ SO METALLICA TOOK THE ALBUM TO MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

On 3 August 1991, Metallica staged what has gone down as one of rock’s most wonderfully excessive listening parties.

The location?

Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The price?

Free.

Approximately 19,000 tickets were reportedly given away, packing the legendary arena with fans who were there for one simple reason:

To hear Metallica’s new album.

Not watch Metallica perform it.

Not see a support band.

Not attend some elaborate industry showcase.

They were there to listen to a record through a gigantic PA system.

Imagine suggesting that in a record-label meeting today.

“Right, we’ve got the new album.”

“Brilliant. Spotify campaign?”

“Nah.”

“TikTok?”

“Nope.”

“Influencers?”

“Absolutely not.”

“What then?”

“Fill Madison Square Garden and press play.”

😂🤘

Proper job.

😬 JAMES HETFIELD WAS WORRIED

Here’s where the story gets even better.

Metallica knew this record represented a significant change.

The band hadn’t suddenly turned into Duran Duran, obviously, but compared with the sprawling complexity of …And Justice for All, this was a very different beast.

And James Hetfield reportedly wanted to know how Metallica’s hardcore fans were going to react.

So he went into the crowd.

Think about that.

One of heavy metal’s most recognisable frontmen standing among thousands of Metallica fans while they heard his band’s unreleased album.

Hetfield was particularly nervous about Nothing Else Matters.

And you can understand why.

This was the bloke behind Battery, Damage, Inc., Disposable Heroes and Blackened suddenly exposing an incredibly vulnerable side of himself.

Acoustic guitar.

Orchestration.

A massive melodic chorus.

Lyrics about intimacy and trust.

For Metallica in 1991, it was genuinely daring.

Would fans embrace it?

Or would Madison Square Garden become the world’s largest gathering of confused thrashers?

Thankfully for Hetfield, the apocalypse didn’t arrive.

🎸 THEN THE BLACK ALBUM LANDED

Nine days later, on 12 August 1991, Metallica was officially released.

And everything went absolutely bananas.

The album contained:

⚡ Enter Sandman

That riff.

You know the one.

Three seconds into it and somewhere in the world a bloke automatically starts nodding his head.

It became one of the defining rock songs of the 1990s and remains a cornerstone of Metallica’s live shows.

🔥 Sad but True

Slow.

Huge.

Filthy.

The sort of riff that doesn’t knock on your front door — it drives a tank through the living room.

🐺 Of Wolf and Man

Metallica embracing their primal side with one of the record’s most underrated riff-fests.

🖤 The Unforgiven

Dark, cinematic and emotionally enormous.

It also started a musical storyline that Metallica would return to with The Unforgiven II and The Unforgiven III.

🐍 Don’t Tread on Me

Big guitars, marching rhythms and yet another example of the album’s crushing production.

💔 Nothing Else Matters

The song James Hetfield had been nervous about.

It became one of Metallica’s most recognisable songs ever.

Funny how things work out, innit?

💿 METALLICA — THE FULL TRACKLIST

Thirty-five years later, it’s still ridiculous how stacked this record is.

  1. Enter Sandman
  2. Sad but True
  3. Holier Than Thou
  4. The Unforgiven
  5. Wherever I May Roam
  6. Don’t Tread on Me
  7. Through the Never
  8. Nothing Else Matters
  9. Of Wolf and Man
  10. The God That Failed
  11. My Friend of Misery
  12. The Struggle Within

That’s not an album.

That’s basically a greatest-hits collection that accidentally happened all at once.

🌎 METALLICA WENT GLOBAL

The impact was immediate.

Metallica hit No. 1 on the US Billboard 200, while its singles became unavoidable on rock radio and MTV.

Suddenly Metallica weren’t merely one of the biggest metal bands.

They were becoming one of the biggest bands on Earth.

People who wouldn’t have known thrash metal if it kicked their garden fence down were buying Metallica records.

Enter Sandman was everywhere.

Nothing Else Matters reached audiences who might never have gone anywhere near Master of Puppets.

The Unforgiven showed another side of the band.

Sad but True demonstrated that heaviness didn’t necessarily require 200mph riffing.

And that enormous Bob Rock production made the whole record sound like it had been recorded inside a collapsing mountain.

🤘 BUT NOT EVERY METALLICA FAN WAS HAPPY

Of course they weren’t.

This is heavy metal we’re talking about.

If there’s one thing metalheads love almost as much as riffs, it’s arguing about riffs.

Some longtime fans accused Metallica of becoming too commercial.

Where were the lengthy instrumental passages?

Where were the eight-minute thrash epics?

Where had the frantic tempos gone?

For listeners raised on Master of Puppets and …And Justice for All, The Black Album could feel startlingly straightforward.

But that’s part of what makes the record fascinating 35 years later.

Metallica didn’t simply make Justice Part Two.

They changed direction when repeating themselves would probably have been easier.

And whether you adore that decision or still mutter angrily into your battle jacket about it, there’s no denying what happened next.

Metallica became enormous.

🏟️ “OUR ALBUM PLAYED MADISON SQUARE GARDEN BEFORE WE DID”

There’s also something beautifully Metallica about the fact that the record effectively played Madison Square Garden before Metallica themselves did.

Lars Ulrich has subsequently joked about that bizarre milestone.

And what a sentence that is.

Most bands dream about playing Madison Square Garden.

Metallica’s album got there first.

😂

Imagine being the support act.

“Who are you opening for tonight?”

“Track seven.”

🖤 35 YEARS LATER, THE RIFFS HAVEN’T GONE ANYWHERE

Three and a half decades later, the impact of The Black Album is impossible to ignore.

Its songs remain staples of Metallica concerts.

Its production influenced generations of hard rock and metal records.

Its accessibility brought countless new listeners into heavy music.

And for an enormous number of people, Enter Sandman was the gateway drug.

You heard that opening.

Then maybe you bought The Black Album.

Then you discovered Master of Puppets.

Then Ride the Lightning.

Next thing you know, you’re standing in a muddy festival field wearing a black T-shirt, drinking an £8 pint while discussing whether Cliff Burton was the greatest bassist who ever lived.

That’s how they get you, mun.

🤘😂🍺

🎂 HAPPY 35TH BIRTHDAY, THE BLACK ALBUM

On 12 August 1991, Metallica released an album that changed their career forever.

Nine days earlier, they had packed Madison Square Garden with roughly 19,000 fans, handed them free tickets and effectively asked:

“Right then… what do you reckon of this?”

James Hetfield even went among the crowd to find out for himself.

Thirty-five years later, we know the answer.

The record became one of the defining rock and metal albums of its generation and turned Metallica into stadium-conquering global giants.

Whether your favourite Metallica era is the raw thrash of Kill ’Em All, the perfection of Master of Puppets, the sprawling aggression of …And Justice for All or the monstrous grooves of The Black Album, this record’s place in heavy music history is absolutely nailed down.

And the song Hetfield was reportedly worried about?

Nothing Else Matters?

Yeah.

That one turned out alright. 😏🖤

Happy 35th birthday to The Black Album.

Now stick on Sad but True loud enough to annoy the neighbours.

It’s what James would’ve wanted. Probably.

🤘🔥🖤

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies.

💬 RIFF REPORTERS — OVER TO YOU!

Where does The Black Album rank in your Metallica collection?

Is it a genuine masterpiece, the moment Metallica became too commercial, or simply one of the greatest gateway records heavy metal has ever produced?

And most importantly…

What’s the best track on it?

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
