After more than five decades of deafening riffs, exploding cannons, sweaty stadiums and Angus Young sprinting around stages like a schoolboy possessed by the spirit of rock ’n’ roll, you might assume performing with AC/DC had become routine.

Apparently not, butt.

According to Brian Johnson, the legendary Australian rockers are currently enjoying themselves more than ever — largely because they have finally stopped worrying about looking cool, acting serious or giving a monkey’s what anyone thinks.

And honestly? That sounds like the perfect recipe for AC/DC chaos. ⚡🔥

Speaking alongside guitarist Angus Young about the band’s live performances, Johnson explained that despite decades of experience, stepping onto a stage still carries an element of unpredictability.

The band may know the songs, the cues and every enormous riff inside out, but there is always something capable of keeping them on their toes.

Then came the line that perfectly sums up AC/DC’s current attitude:

“It’s just more fun because we don’t care anymore.”

What a statement. What a mood. What an absolutely glorious bit of rock ’n’ roll wisdom.

🎸 AC/DC HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO PROVE

Let’s be honest here: AC/DC could walk onto a stage, play the opening riff to “Back in Black”, drop the microphones and wander off for a pint.

Their legacy is already nailed firmly into the walls of rock history.

This is a band responsible for some of the biggest songs, albums and live spectacles the genre has ever produced. Their music has filled bedrooms, pubs, football stadiums, festival fields and probably several million dodgy work vans with broken speakers.

They have sold records by the truckload, influenced countless bands and created riffs so recognisable that even people who claim they “don’t really listen to rock” know them within three seconds.

AC/DC do not need to chase trends.

They do not need viral dances.

They do not need to reinvent themselves as a jazz-funk collective featuring twelve ukuleles and a DJ called Gaz.

They simply need Angus Young, Brian Johnson, a mountain of amplifiers and enough electricity to make the local power grid start sweating.

⚡ GETTING OLDER, GETTING LOUDER

Johnson, now deep into his seventies, also admitted that performing at this stage of life brings different concerns.

It is no longer about trying to appear mysterious or painfully serious. Sometimes it is about avoiding cables, watching where everyone is standing and making sure nobody goes flying across the stage during “Thunderstruck.”

Angus reportedly joked that one of his main concerns is simply not tripping over.

That sort of honesty is one of the reasons fans continue to adore the pair.

Behind the gigantic production and legendary status are two musicians who still approach the stage with excitement, humour and a touch of nerves.

They may be rock royalty, but they are still human.

Well, Angus might actually be powered by lightning and school uniforms. Science has yet to confirm it.

🤘 THE BAND ARE INTERACTING MORE ONSTAGE

Johnson revealed that AC/DC are now doing things onstage they might not have considered years ago, including interacting more freely with one another.

When musicians are younger, there can be pressure to maintain an image.

You are supposed to look dangerous.

You are supposed to appear effortlessly cool.

You certainly are not supposed to laugh because somebody nearly trips over a monitor or forgets where they left their hat.

AC/DC have moved beyond all of that.

They can relax, enjoy the moment and react naturally to one another without worrying about whether every second looks perfectly choreographed.

That freedom appears to have brought a fresh sense of life to their performances.

There is still precision.

There is still enormous power.

There are still riffs capable of flattening a small Welsh village.

But now there is also visible joy.

🔥 SURVIVING EVERYTHING ROCK THREW AT THEM

AC/DC’s journey has not exactly been a gentle Sunday drive through the countryside.

The band has endured devastating loss, serious health problems, lineup changes and moments when their future appeared uncertain.

Johnson himself was forced to step away from touring in 2016 after doctors warned he risked total hearing loss by continuing to perform.

For many fans, it felt possible that his days fronting AC/DC might be over.

Thankfully, advances in hearing technology eventually helped him return, restoring one of rock’s most unmistakable voices to the stage.

His comeback has carried additional emotion because fans know it was never guaranteed.

Every scream, every grin and every blast through “You Shook Me All Night Long” now feels like something worth appreciating.

AC/DC are not merely continuing.

They are celebrating the fact that they still can.

🎤 BRIAN JOHNSON REMAINS ONE OF ROCK’S GREAT CHARACTERS

Brian Johnson has always possessed the sort of personality rock music desperately needs.

He is warm, funny, enthusiastic and completely uninterested in pretending that being a global rock star makes him better than anyone else.

He often speaks like the bloke you would meet in a pub who casually mentions he once fronted one of the biggest bands on Earth between stories about cars, football and whatever happened near the toilets after closing time.

Yet when the lights go down and the opening riff kicks in, that familiar voice erupts through the speakers and instantly becomes larger than life.

Johnson joined AC/DC following the tragic death of Bon Scott, stepping into an almost impossible situation.

He then helped the band create “Back in Black,” one of the biggest and most influential rock albums ever made.

Decades later, he remains at the front of the AC/DC machine, still roaring his way through songs that have soundtracked generations.

🧨 ANGUS YOUNG STILL REFUSES TO SLOW DOWN

Then, of course, there is Angus.

Most people approaching his age would consider walking to the kitchen without making a noise an achievement.

Angus Young continues charging across stadium stages, duck-walking, throwing himself across platforms and playing solos while dressed as the world’s most terrifying school pupil.

His stamina remains one of rock’s great mysteries.

Perhaps he stretches.

Perhaps he drinks something magical.

Perhaps someone plugs him directly into the amplifier before every show.

Whatever the answer, his commitment has never changed.

That iconic Gibson SG still spits out the riffs exactly as fans want them: dirty, direct and loud enough to loosen fillings.

🏟️ AC/DC REMAIN A STADIUM-SIZED EXPERIENCE

An AC/DC concert is not simply a collection of songs.

It is a full-scale rock ceremony.

The giant bell.

The cannons.

The enormous stage.

The inflatable Rosie.

The sea of flashing devil horns.

The moment thousands of people scream “THUNDER!” together and briefly become one enormous, beer-powered choir.

Few bands have created a live experience this recognisable.

You could remove every logo from the stage and fans would still know exactly whose show they had wandered into.

The sound, atmosphere and imagery are unmistakably AC/DC.

That consistency is part of their appeal.

Fans do not attend hoping the band will suddenly perform an experimental ambient version of “Highway to Hell.”

They want riffs.

They want cannons.

They want Angus running around like someone has released him from a cage.

AC/DC deliver exactly that — and they do it better than nearly anyone.

⚡ “WE DON’T CARE ANYMORE” DOESN’T MEAN THEY’VE STOPPED CARING

Johnson’s comment could easily be misunderstood.

He is not saying the band no longer cares about the music, the audience or the quality of its performance.

Quite the opposite.

AC/DC clearly care enormously about delivering the show fans have paid to see.

What they no longer care about is unnecessary pressure.

They are not worrying about appearing fashionable.

They are not trying to impress critics who decided guitar music was dead for the 400th time last Tuesday.

They are not attempting to compete with younger bands.

They are simply being AC/DC.

And that confidence is exactly what makes them so powerful.

🖤 A LESSON FOR THE REST OF US

There is something surprisingly uplifting buried inside Johnson’s comment.

When you are younger, you can spend an enormous amount of time worrying about how you appear to other people.

Are you cool enough?

Are you successful enough?

Are you standing correctly while playing a guitar solo in front of 60,000 people?

Eventually, you realise most people are too busy worrying about themselves to notice.

AC/DC appear to have reached that glorious stage where the only things that matter are the music, the crowd and enjoying every opportunity while it lasts.

That is not giving up.

That is freedom.

📰 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

There are musicians who spend their entire careers trying to appear effortlessly cool.

AC/DC have become effortlessly cool because they have stopped trying.

Brian Johnson and Angus Young are not stepping onto stages to prove they still belong there.

The deafening crowd reaction proves that before the first chord is even played.

They are there because they love it.

The fans love it.

And somewhere deep inside the venue, a stack of speakers is preparing to file a noise complaint.

AC/DC’s future will always attract speculation, particularly given the age of its members and everything the band has overcome.

But Johnson’s comments suggest that right now, they are focused on enjoying the ride rather than making dramatic declarations about what comes next.

So long as Angus can still duck-walk, Brian can still unleash that unmistakable roar and the cannons remain fully loaded, the rock ’n’ roll train keeps rolling.

No trends.

No nonsense.

No apologies.

Just one of the greatest rock bands ever having the time of their lives.

And frankly, mun, that is exactly how it should be. 🤘⚡🔥

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
