Festival-goers at Upheaval Festival were left scratching their heads this weekend after Poppy failed to appear on stage for her scheduled performance, despite her band taking to the stage and playing through multiple songs without her.

Instead of the genre-bending star leading the charge, her masked bandmates performed instrumental versions of several tracks while wearing N95 face masks, creating one of the strangest and most surreal festival moments of 2026. 😷🎸

Following the performance, Poppy broke her silence and explained exactly why she never walked on stage.
The singer revealed that hazardous air quality, caused by smoke drifting across the region from the ongoing Canadian wildfires, made it impossible for her to safely perform.
According to Poppy, the Air Quality Index (AQI) had climbed above 350—a level officially classed as hazardous.
She explained that she simply couldn’t breathe well enough to sing, making the difficult decision to stay off stage rather than risk her health.
While disappointing for everyone hoping to see her perform, it’s a stark reminder that musicians are human too—and no show is worth risking someone’s health.

Rather than cancelling the performance entirely, Poppy’s band decided to honour the festival slot by taking to the stage without their frontwoman.
