Nearly five decades into their career, Saxon are not merely surviving.

They are charging across Europe like a leather-jacketed tank powered by twin guitars, pints of Yorkshire tea and enough heavy metal thunder to shake the fillings out of your teeth. ⚡🎸

With another huge summer of European festival appearances ahead, frontman Biff Byford says the legendary band’s popularity has risen dramatically during the last six or seven years.

And honestly? He’s not wrong, butt.

Saxon have enjoyed a mighty resurgence, pulling younger fans into the fold while continuing to satisfy the loyal denim-and-leather army who have followed them since the early days of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

“OUR POPULARITY HAS GONE UP MASSIVELY” 📈🔥

Speaking ahead of the band’s latest run of summer shows, Byford reflected on Saxon’s growing audiences and their renewed momentum.

“Our popularity has gone up massively over the last six or seven years.”

That popularity hasn’t appeared out of nowhere.

Saxon have continued releasing powerful new records, maintaining a strong presence online and touring like a band with something to prove. Instead of drifting into comfortable nostalgia territory, they have kept pushing forward, writing fresh material and taking their music to new generations of metalheads.

While plenty of veteran acts might be happy to play the hits and disappear back onto the tour bus, Saxon continue to behave like the battle is still being fought.

New albums. New tours. New festival crowds.

Same enormous riffs.

Proper job. 🤘

BRITISH HEAVY METAL’S FESTIVAL AMBASSADORS 🇬🇧🎪

Saxon’s 2026 festival campaign is taking them across Britain and mainland Europe, with appearances at some of the most respected heavy metal gatherings on the planet.

Their summer schedule includes performances at Maid of Stone Festival, Germany’s legendary Wacken Open Air, Switzerland’s Z7 Summer Nights, Belgium’s Alcatraz Festival, Summer Breeze Open Air and a headline appearance on the opening night of Bloodstock Open Air.

That is a serious amount of festival mud, motorway service stations and expensive backstage coffee.

It also gives Saxon another opportunity to proudly represent the sound of British heavy metal on an international stage.

Few bands are better suited to the job.

From their working-class Yorkshire roots to their unmistakably British storytelling, Saxon have always worn their identity proudly. Their songs celebrate history, machinery, rebellion, music and the unbreakable relationship between a band and its audience.

When Saxon play a festival, it doesn’t feel like a polite heritage performance.

It feels like the gates of an enormous steel factory have opened and released 40 years of riffs directly into the crowd.

THE ANTHEMS THAT REFUSE TO AGE 🎸⚡

Saxon’s back catalogue contains enough festival ammunition to flatten a small village.

Wheels of Steel remains one of British metal’s greatest rallying cries. Its enormous chorus was practically designed to be shouted by thousands of people holding plastic cups in the air.

Denim and Leather is more than a song. It is a celebration of the fans who helped build the heavy metal movement from the ground up.

Then there’s 747 (Strangers in the Night), Strong Arm of the Law, Motorcycle Man, Heavy Metal Thunder, Crusader, Power and the Glory and Princess of the Night.

That is not a setlist.

That is a declaration of war. 😈🔥

The brilliance of Saxon’s current festival appearances is that these songs are no longer being enjoyed solely by fans who bought the original records.

Teenagers and younger metalheads are discovering the band through streaming platforms, festival line-ups, social media clips and recommendations from parents who still have a battered Saxon patch sewn onto an old denim jacket somewhere in the attic.

The generations are mixing.

Veteran fans are throwing the horns next to newcomers hearing Wheels of Steel live for the first time.

That is how heavy metal survives, mun.

SAXON AREN’T INTERESTED IN BECOMING A MUSEUM PIECE 🏛️❌

The easiest route for a band with Saxon’s history would be to become a travelling museum exhibition.

Play the classics. Sell the anniversary shirts. Collect the applause. Repeat next year.

Saxon have chosen the harder and far more exciting path.

Their recent records have kept the band creatively active, with 2024’s Hell, Fire and Damnation showing that they can still produce heavy, dramatic and relevant traditional metal.

The arrival of Diamond Head guitarist Brian Tatler added another fascinating chapter to the band’s story, bringing together two major forces from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Tatler stepped into the touring line-up after founding guitarist Paul Quinn retired from regular touring, and his influence is expected to continue on Saxon’s forthcoming 25th studio album.

The record is currently expected in 2027 and has been described by Byford as another heavy chapter in Saxon’s catalogue.

Twenty-five studio albums.

Some bands can’t survive twenty-five rehearsals without somebody starting a fight over the WhatsApp group.

Saxon are still out there making new heavy metal. Respect where it’s due. 🤘

BIFF BYFORD: ONE OF BRITISH METAL’S GREAT SURVIVORS 🎤🔥

At the centre of Saxon’s continuing journey is Biff Byford.

His voice, stage presence and unmistakable northern character have helped define the band for decades. He doesn’t behave like a distant rock star delivering a carefully rehearsed speech between songs.

He talks to audiences like they are part of the gang.

That connection has always mattered.

Byford has also faced serious health challenges in recent years, including heart surgery and treatment for colon cancer. Yet his determination to return to the stage and continue performing has only strengthened the bond between Saxon and their fans.

Nobody expects musicians to be indestructible.

Seeing Byford standing beneath the lights, leading another enormous crowd through those classic choruses, carries more emotional weight now than it might have done years ago.

Every performance feels like a victory lap — although Saxon clearly have no intention of reaching the finish line just yet.

FROM BARNSLEY TO THE BIGGEST METAL STAGES 🌍🤘

Saxon emerged from Barnsley during the late 1970s, becoming one of the defining names of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal alongside bands including Iron Maiden and Def Leppard.

Their breakthrough arrived with albums such as Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of the Law and Denim and Leather, records that helped establish the blueprint for British heavy metal.

The music was loud, direct and proudly built for the stage.

There were no velvet ropes separating Saxon from their listeners. Their songs understood the people standing in front of them because they came from the same industrial towns, working-class communities and packed music venues.

That authenticity still resonates today.

Whether Saxon are playing in Britain, Germany, Greece, Sweden or Belgium, the message remains universal:

Turn it up. Stand together. Sing until your voice disappears.

THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT 🤘🇬🇧

Saxon’s renewed popularity proves that genuine heavy metal does not come with an expiry date.

The trends may change. Festival fashions may come and go. Somebody will inevitably invent another subgenre with twelve words in its name.

But a huge riff, a powerful chorus and a band that believes every note will always connect.

Saxon are not simply flying the flag for British heavy metal this summer.

They are marching across Europe waving it above their heads while Heavy Metal Thunder blasts from the speakers and thousands of fans scream every word back at them.

Nearly fifty years into the journey, the wheels of steel are still rolling.

And they don’t look ready to stop anytime soon. 🇬🇧⚡🔥

Are you catching Saxon during their summer festival run? What is the greatest Saxon anthem of all time? Get involved in the comments, butt — and keep those horns held high! 🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
