“Some bands chase fame. Others chase the perfect riff. Heavy on the Ride have spent more than 15 years doing the latter – and Welsh rock is all the better for it.”

Wales has always punched well above its weight when it comes to producing incredible rock and metal bands. From global superstars to grassroots heroes keeping the local scene alive, there’s something special about the Welsh rock community. It’s passionate, fiercely loyal and built on people who simply love loud music.

Few bands embody that spirit better than Heavy on the Ride.

Hailing from Swansea, Heavy on the Ride have become one of South Wales’ most respected underground heavy rock acts. Since bursting onto the scene in 2009, they’ve spent over a decade crafting colossal riffs, delivering explosive live performances and proving that you don’t need major-label backing to make a serious impact.

They’re a band built on determination, friendship and a genuine love of heavy music.

For fans of Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon, Clutch, Melvins, Kyuss and groove-driven rock, Heavy on the Ride deserve a place firmly on your playlist.

So, grab a cold pint, crank the volume and let’s dive into the story of one of Wales’ finest heavy-rock exports.

🎸 Where It All Began

Heavy on the Ride officially formed in April 2009 in Swansea.

Like many great bands, it all started with a shared obsession for heavy music and a desire to create something original.

Rather than simply following the trends dominating the rock scene at the time, the band wanted to forge their own identity. Their goal wasn’t to sound like anyone else — it was to write music that felt honest, exciting and unapologetically heavy.

Founding members Michael Bale and Jordan Huxtable quickly discovered a chemistry that would become the backbone of Heavy on the Ride.

Their songwriting combined huge, fuzz-soaked guitar tones with memorable melodies, progressive influences and grooves that hit audiences square in the chest.

Over time, the line-up evolved, with Jason Young eventually taking his place behind the drum kit, completing the powerful trio that continues to carry the Heavy on the Ride name today.

🔥 Building a Sound That’s Entirely Their Own

Trying to pigeonhole Heavy on the Ride into one genre isn’t easy.

Yes, there’s plenty of stoner rock.

There’s sludge.

There’s classic heavy rock.

There’s progressive experimentation.

But none of those labels fully describe what the band does.

Instead, Heavy on the Ride have developed a sound that borrows from multiple influences while remaining unmistakably their own.

Expect:

  • 🎸 Thick, fuzzy guitar riffs
  • 🥁 Thunderous rhythm sections
  • 🎤 Powerful vocal melodies
  • 🌌 Atmospheric soundscapes
  • ⚡ Progressive twists
  • 🤘 Huge hooks that stay with you long after the final note

Every release shows another side of the band’s creativity.

Sometimes crushingly heavy.

Sometimes beautifully atmospheric.

Always unmistakably Heavy on the Ride.

💿 A Journey Through the Music

Delaying the Inevitable – 2012

The band’s debut EP announced Heavy on the Ride as serious contenders within the Welsh underground.

While many debut releases simply showcase potential, Delaying the Inevitable already displayed a surprising level of confidence.

The riffs were huge.

The songwriting ambitious.

The performances energetic.

It laid the foundations for everything that followed.

Different Animals – 2014

Two years later came what many fans consider a significant leap forward.

Different Animals demonstrated just how much the band had matured.

Production improved.

Songwriting became tighter.

The experimentation became even more adventurous without sacrificing the heavy grooves fans loved.

It was the sound of a band discovering exactly who they wanted to become.

Cheshire Cat Grin – 2019

By the time Cheshire Cat Grin arrived, Heavy on the Ride had become completely comfortable exploring new musical territory.

Rather than repeating previous formulas, the band continued evolving.

That’s perhaps their greatest strength.

No two releases sound identical.

Each one builds upon the last while remaining unmistakably Heavy on the Ride.

🎤 A Reputation Earned on Stage

Albums tell one story.

Live shows tell another.

And that’s where Heavy on the Ride truly come alive.

Anyone who’s witnessed them in a packed venue knows exactly what to expect.

Massive sound.

Relentless energy.

Zero shortcuts.

They don’t rely on elaborate gimmicks to make an impact. Instead, three musicians create an enormous wall of sound that fills every corner of the room.

Whether it’s a hometown Swansea crowd or an audience discovering them for the first time, Heavy on the Ride approach every performance with the same intensity.

It’s this consistency that’s earned them respect across the UK rock scene.

🤝 Sharing the Stage with Legends

One of the biggest measures of a band’s reputation is the company they keep.

Heavy on the Ride have built an impressive live résumé over the years, sharing stages with internationally respected artists, including former members of Queens of the Stone Age.

Among those they’ve performed alongside are:

  • Nick Oliveri
  • Joey Castillo
  • Gene Trautmann
  • Dave Catching
  • Electric Eel Shock
  • The Subways
  • The late Ikey Owens of The Mars Volta

Those opportunities weren’t handed to them.

They were earned through years of hard work and unforgettable live performances.

🏴 Champions of the Welsh Scene

One thing The Riff Report loves is seeing Welsh bands supporting one another.

Heavy on the Ride have always been part of that community.

They’ve shared stages with countless grassroots artists, helped strengthen local venues and continued flying the Welsh flag wherever they perform.

In an age where independent venues face increasing challenges, bands like Heavy on the Ride are more important than ever.

They’re proof that incredible music isn’t limited to arenas, giant tours or heavily funded campaigns.

Some of the UK’s best rock bands are still grinding it out in clubs, pubs and grassroots venues every weekend.

That’s where real rock ’n’ roll lives, mun.

🚀 A New Album and a Massive Swansea Launch Party

The next chapter in the Heavy on the Ride story is ready to explode into life — and naturally, it’s happening right in the heart of their hometown.

Heavy on the Ride will celebrate the arrival of their new album with a huge launch party at The Bunkhouse in Swansea on Saturday 1st August 2026.

This isn’t just another gig on the calendar.

It’s a celebration of the band’s journey, the new record and the Welsh heavy-music community that has supported them along the way.

After years of writing, recording, gigging and building their reputation one thunderous performance at a time, the launch party gives Heavy on the Ride the chance to unveil this new chapter in front of a hometown crowd.

And let’s be honest — Swansea knows how to make some noise.

🎉 Heavy on the Ride Album Launch Party

📅 Saturday 1st August 2026
📍 The Bunkhouse, Swansea
🚪 Doors: 6:00pm

Heavy on the Ride will be joined by three cracking support acts:

  • Goat Major
  • Cemetery Dogs
  • Raygun Roulette

That is a proper stacked bill, butt.

From the first note of the evening to the final crushing riff, the night promises to be a celebration of heavy music, Welsh talent and the grassroots venues keeping the scene alive.

Fans can expect new material from the album alongside favourites from across the band’s career, all delivered with the volume, power and glorious fuzz Heavy on the Ride have become known for.

There’s every chance the walls of The Bunkhouse will need a structural inspection afterwards.

🎟️ Get Your Tickets

Tickets for the Heavy on the Ride Album Launch Party are available now through Gigantic.

👉 Buy tickets here:
https://www.gigantic.com/heavy-on-the-ride-tickets/swansea-the-bunkhouse/2026-08-01-18-00

Don’t leave it until the last minute, mun.

Grab your ticket, round up your mates and prepare for an evening of crushing riffs, Welsh rock talent and glorious Bunkhouse chaos.

Buying a ticket doesn’t only get you through the door.

It supports the band.

It supports the venue.

It supports the other artists on the bill.

And it helps keep original live music thriving across South Wales.

Proper job. 🤘🏴🔥

🔥 Four Bands, One Huge Night

The launch party isn’t only about Heavy on the Ride.

It also shines a spotlight on the strength and variety of the Welsh and UK underground rock scene.

Goat Major, Cemetery Dogs and Raygun Roulette each bring their own distinctive sound and attitude to the bill, creating an evening that should appeal to anyone who likes their music loud, heavy and served without unnecessary nonsense.

This is exactly what grassroots music should look like.

Multiple bands.

A passionate crowd.

An independent venue.

And enough guitar riffs to power the lights across Swansea Bay.

No algorithms deciding what you should hear.

No enormous stadium with a £9 pint and a seat somewhere near the moon.

Just bands, fans and proper live music.

Tidy.

🏠 A Hometown Celebration

There’s always something special about an album-launch show, but launching a record in your hometown takes it to another level.

Swansea isn’t merely the location for the evening.

It’s part of Heavy on the Ride’s story.

The city, its venues, its musicians and its audiences have all played a part in shaping the band over the years. Bringing the album home to The Bunkhouse feels like the perfect way to mark the occasion.

For long-time fans, it’s an opportunity to celebrate everything the band have achieved.

For newcomers, it’s the ideal chance to experience Heavy on the Ride at their loudest, proudest and most fired-up.

And for the band themselves, it promises to be one of those nights that sticks in the memory long after the amps have cooled down and the last pint has mysteriously vanished.

🎸 Why Heavy on the Ride Matter

Success isn’t always measured by chart positions.

Sometimes it’s measured by longevity.

By passion.

By staying true to who you are.

For more than 15 years, Heavy on the Ride have continued writing music they believe in, performing for fans who genuinely care and representing Wales with pride every time they step onto a stage.

They’ve earned every fan.

Every gig.

Every opportunity.

And they’re still hungry for more.

That’s what makes them special.

🤘 The Riff Report Verdict

Heavy on the Ride are exactly the sort of band we love shouting about here at The Riff Report.

They’re independent.

They’re hardworking.

They’re unapologetically Welsh.

Most importantly, they write brilliant heavy rock packed with monster riffs and enough groove to shake the foundations of any venue they play.

Their album-launch party at The Bunkhouse isn’t just a chance to hear the new material live. It’s an opportunity to celebrate a band that has spent years helping keep the Welsh underground scene loud, proud and very much alive.

If you’re already a fan, you know exactly what we’re talking about.

If you’ve never experienced Heavy on the Ride before, there’s never been a better time to jump aboard.

Support your local scene.

Buy the album.

Grab a ticket.

Stand at the front.

And let the riffs do the talking.

Because if Heavy on the Ride have taught us anything over the past decade and a half, it’s that great rock music doesn’t need gimmicks — it just needs heart, passion and amps turned up to eleven.

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
