By Around 1,000 Fans — Because Even The Numbers Got Caught In The Pit
Cardiff, take a bow.
No, seriously — stand up, throw the horns, spill half your pint, and scream until the roof starts sweating.
Because Metallica didn’t just come to Cardiff.
They claimed the Principality Stadium, flattened it with riffs, filled it with fire, and walked away having smashed one of the biggest live music records in Welsh entertainment history.
The metal giants reportedly pulled in a monstrous crowd of around 76,000 fans for their Cardiff show, beating the previous Principality Stadium concert attendance record held by Ed Sheeran, who drew around 75,000 back in 2022.
That’s right.
Metallica beat Ed Sheeran by roughly 1,000 fans.
One thousand extra black T-shirts.
One thousand extra heads banging.
One thousand extra voices yelling “EXIT LIGHT!” like their lives depended on it.
Tidy little Sunday in Wales, wasn’t it?
🏟️ Cardiff Just Hosted A Metal History Moment
For years, the Principality Stadium has been home to rugby battles, pop spectacles, emotional singalongs, massive sporting occasions, and crowds loud enough to make your nan complain from three valleys away.
But this was different.
This was Metallica.
This was thrash royalty rolling into the capital with the M72 World Tour and turning the home of Welsh rugby into a gigantic circular temple of distortion.
From the second fans started pouring into Cardiff, the city had that unmistakable big-gig electricity. Black shirts everywhere. Battle jackets in the sunshine. Trains packed with metalheads. Pubs buzzing. Chips flying. Someone definitely saying “I haven’t seen them since the 90s” every three feet.
And by showtime?
The place was absolutely rammed.
Not “busy”.
Not “a decent crowd”.
Rammed.
The kind of rammed where you look around and think:
“Fair play, heavy metal is not just alive — it’s nicked your parking space and ordered another round.”
🔥 Metallica Didn’t Just Break The Record — They Torched It
Ed Sheeran’s 2022 Principality Stadium record was already massive. Seventy-five thousand people for one artist is no joke. That’s proper superstar territory.
But Metallica turned up and said:
“Cute. Now hold our wah pedal.”
With around 76,000 fans inside the stadium, the band reportedly set a new live music attendance record for the venue — and, according to local reports, helped create the biggest live music event ever staged in Wales.
That is huge.
Not just for Metallica.
Not just for Cardiff.
But for heavy music.
Because every few years, someone in a beige office somewhere declares that guitar music is dying. They say rock is old news. They say metal is niche. They say riffs are yesterday’s dinner.
Then Metallica arrive in Wales and pull 76,000 people into a stadium.
Aye, alright then, butt.
🎸 Three Decades Of Waiting… Then The Roof Nearly Came Off
For many Welsh fans, this wasn’t just another date on the tour calendar. This was the one they’d been waiting for.
Metallica’s Cardiff return felt massive because, for a lot of people, it had been far too long since the band had properly shaken Wales by the collar.
And when they finally did return, they didn’t tiptoe in with a polite little stage and a few lights.
No chance.
They brought the full M72 monster: the huge in-the-round setup, the stadium-swallowing sound, the screens, the fire, the drums, the swagger, and enough riffs to register on local planning applications.
This was not a concert.
This was Cardiff getting power-washed in metal.
⚡ The City Was Dressed In Black
You could feel it before the first note even hit.
Cardiff became Metallica territory for the day.
Everywhere you looked, there were fans making the pilgrimage. Old-school thrash heads. Young fans seeing them for the first time. Parents bringing kids. Cardiff locals. Travellers from across Wales. People who had clearly been wearing the same Metallica shirt since 1992 and absolutely deserved a medal.
The streets around the stadium had that glorious pre-gig madness:
the smell of food, the sound of chants, the shuffle of thousands heading towards the gates, and the quiet panic of someone realising the merch queue was basically its own support act.
It was beautiful.
Chaotic, loud, sweaty, ridiculous — exactly how a proper stadium rock show should feel.
🥁 Gojira And Knocked Loose Brought The Warning Shots
Before Metallica even hit the stage, Cardiff had already been properly tenderised.
With Gojira and Knocked Loose on support duties, this wasn’t some gentle warm-up situation. This was a full-scale sonic workout before the main event.
Gojira brought that planet-crushing precision and atmosphere, the kind of set that makes you feel like ancient mountains have started double-kicking.
Knocked Loose, meanwhile, arrived like someone had kicked open the door to the pit and shouted, “Right then, let’s ruin some necks.”
By the time Metallica appeared, the crowd was already warmed up, fired up, and probably wondering if their spine was still under warranty.
🐉 A Welsh Record For A Global Metal Machine
The really lush thing about this record is that it happened here.
In Wales.
Not London.
Not Manchester.
Not Birmingham.
Cardiff.
And that matters.
Because Wales deserves these monster nights. We’ve got the crowds. We’ve got the passion. We’ve got the venues. We’ve got the fans who will travel, shout, buy the shirt, sing every word, and still somehow end up in Greggs afterwards like champions.
The Principality Stadium has long been one of the most iconic venues in the UK, but Metallica taking it to this level proves once again that Cardiff can hold its own with any major live music city.
Big bands should look at this and take notes.
Wales wants noise.
Wales wants fire.
Wales wants riffs so large they need their own postcode.
❤️ Big Riffs, Bigger Heart
And fair play, Metallica didn’t just roll into Cardiff, smash the record, and vanish into the smoke.
Through their All Within My Hands Foundation, the band also donated £20,000 to Cardiff Foodbank, helping support local people at a time when foodbanks are under serious pressure.
That deserves a proper nod.
Because yes, we love the pyro.
We love the riffs.
We love the stadium chaos.
We love thousands of people shouting along to “Enter Sandman”.
But when a band of Metallica’s size gives something back to the city hosting them, that hits differently.
Big stage. Big crowd. Big gesture.
Proper class.
👑 Metallica Take The Cardiff Crown
So there it is.
Metallica: around 76,000 fans.
Ed Sheeran’s previous record: around 75,000 fans.
The difference: roughly 1,000 people and one enormous metal victory lap.
The Principality Stadium has seen plenty of huge nights, but this one will go down as a landmark for Welsh live music.
A night where metal didn’t just show up.
It dominated.
A night where Cardiff became the loudest city in the country.
A night where Metallica proved, once again, that heavy music still belongs in the biggest rooms, on the biggest stages, in front of the biggest crowds.
And if anyone tries telling you rock and metal are fading?
Point them towards Cardiff.
Point them towards 76,000 fans.
Point them towards a stadium full of Welsh voices screaming back at one of the biggest bands on Earth.
Because Metallica didn’t just beat a record.
They made Wales louder.
YESS MUN. 🤘🔥
