The Wait Is Over, Butt! 🤘

After two days of campsite setup, inflatable furniture disasters, queueing for showers and attempting to remember where we’d actually pitched our tents, Friday finally arrived and with it came the opening of the Main Arena at Download Festival 2026.

This is the day Download truly begins.

The campsites may have been buzzing since Wednesday, but Friday is when Donington transforms into the rock and metal capital of the world. Tens of thousands of fans poured through the gates ready for a day packed with riffs, singalongs, circle pits and enough pyro to be seen from space.

And what a day it turned out to be.

Sunshine At Download? What Sorcery Is This?

For once, Download wasn’t trying to drown everyone.

The weather behaved itself for most of the day, providing perfect conditions for fans to explore the arena, grab a cold drink and enjoy some incredible live music.

Of course, this is Download, so everyone remained suspicious. The moment the sun appeared, thousands of Downloaders instinctively looked skywards expecting a surprise rainstorm to arrive at any moment.

Thankfully, Donington remained mostly dry, allowing fans to focus on what really matters – the music.

P.O.D. Kick Off The Party

One of the standout performances of the day came from P.O.D., who brought enough energy to power the entire festival.

From the opening moments, the crowd erupted into life. Circle pits appeared instantly, fans climbed onto shoulders and every chorus was met with a wall of voices singing back towards the stage.

The Californian rock legends reminded everyone exactly why they remain one of the most respected live acts around. Their mix of heavy riffs, infectious melodies and positive energy created one of the biggest party atmospheres of the day.

Simply put, they smashed it.

Halestorm Bring Fire, Confetti and Pure Rock ‘N’ Roll

If there was an award for setting Donington on fire – metaphorically and almost literally – it would belong to Halestorm.

The American rock giants delivered one of Friday’s most explosive performances, combining huge songs, incredible musicianship and enough pyrotechnics to make the local fire brigade nervous.

Lzzy Hale commanded the stage like the rock royalty she is, effortlessly switching between powerhouse vocals and blistering guitar work.

Fire blasted into the sky.

Confetti rained down across the crowd.

The audience responded with deafening cheers.

This wasn’t just a concert. This was a statement.

Cypress Hill Turn Download Into One Giant Smoke-Free Party

One of the most entertaining sets of the day came courtesy of Cypress Hill.

Their appearance proved once again that Download Festival continues to embrace a wide variety of alternative music while maintaining its rock and metal heart.

From the moment they hit the stage, the atmosphere completely changed.

Fans bounced.

Fans laughed.

Fans sang every word.

The legendary hip-hop outfit delivered a set packed with energy, humour and classic tracks that had the entire field moving.

At times it felt less like a festival performance and more like the world’s biggest party had somehow broken out in the middle of Donington Park.

And honestly?

We were absolutely here for it.

Creeper Deliver Theatre, Horror and Pure Download Magic

Friday also belonged to Creeper.

The Southampton rockers brought their trademark mix of gothic storytelling, horror aesthetics and massive songs to Download and delivered one of the most memorable performances of the day.

Every song felt like a chapter from a dark comic book.

Every movement on stage felt carefully choreographed.

Every member of the crowd seemed completely absorbed in the experience.

Creeper continue to prove that they are one of the most unique bands in British rock, and Friday’s performance showed exactly why they continue to build such a loyal following.

Absolutely brilliant.

The Download Community Shines Again

As always, Download isn’t just about the bands.

It’s about the people.

Throughout the day we witnessed countless acts of kindness, from fans helping each other navigate the arena to strangers sharing sunscreen, charging cables and directions.

The incredible sensory space in District X continued to provide a welcoming environment for anyone needing a quieter place to recharge away from the crowds and noise.

It remains one of the most important additions to the festival and deserves huge praise.

Back To Camp We Go

As darkness fell over Donington, the arena may have closed, but Download certainly didn’t.

Thousands headed back towards the campsites where the party continued long into the night.

District X remained packed.

Food vendors were doing a roaring trade.

Portable speakers appeared from seemingly nowhere.

And somewhere across the campsite, someone was undoubtedly attempting to play Wonderwall despite every warning not to.

Classic Download.

Final Verdict

Friday delivered everything we love about Download Festival.

Huge crowds.

Huge riffs.

Huge performances.

Whether you were headbanging during P.O.D., singing your heart out during Halestorm, partying with Cypress Hill or embracing the theatrical brilliance of Creeper, there was something for everyone.

Most importantly, the spirit of Download was alive and well.

The arena is open.

The weekend is underway.

And if Friday is anything to go by, Download Festival 2026 is shaping up to be one for the history books.

Bring on Saturday, butt!
