The Prince Of Darkness Gets The Hometown Tribute He Deserves

There are certain people who become bigger than music.

Some artists sell records.

Some artists fill arenas.

Some artists become household names.

And then there are the rare few who transcend everything and become part of a city’s identity.

Ozzy Osbourne is one of those people.

The moment you mention Birmingham to a rock or metal fan anywhere on the planet, chances are the conversation will eventually end up at Ozzy, Black Sabbath and the birth of heavy metal. For decades, fans have travelled from every corner of the globe to walk the same streets, visit the same neighbourhoods and stand in the city where a musical revolution began.

Now, one of Birmingham’s most famous sons is finally receiving the museum exhibition his extraordinary career deserves.

Since opening in June 2025, Ozzy Osbourne: Working Class Hero at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery has become one of the city’s biggest cultural success stories, attracting an incredible 450,000 visitors and proving that the Prince Of Darkness remains as beloved as ever.

The exhibition has become so popular that organisers have extended it into September 2026, giving thousands more fans the opportunity to experience a remarkable journey through one of rock’s most iconic lives.

And honestly?

It’s about bloody time.

🏭 The Story Starts In Aston

Before the sold-out stadiums.

Before the Grammy Awards.

Before the reality television fame.

Before the bat incident.

Before becoming one of the most recognisable voices in music history.

There was just a working-class lad from Aston.

Born John Michael Osbourne in 1948, Ozzy grew up in post-war Birmingham, surrounded by factories, foundries and the industrial landscape that would eventually help shape the sound of heavy metal itself.

Life wasn’t glamorous.

Money was tight.

The future wasn’t guaranteed.

Yet somehow, from those ordinary beginnings emerged a voice that would help change music forever.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the exhibition is how it highlights those early years.

Visitors aren’t immediately thrown into platinum records and global stardom.

Instead, they’re reminded that Ozzy’s story begins with Birmingham itself.

His upbringing.

His family.

His community.

His city.

It’s a powerful reminder that some of the greatest success stories often come from the most humble beginnings.

⚡ The Birth Of Heavy Metal

You simply cannot tell Ozzy’s story without talking about Black Sabbath.

In many ways, Birmingham and heavy metal are inseparable.

The dark, grinding sounds of industry that filled the city during the 1960s became part of the DNA of Sabbath’s music.

The heavy riffs.

The darker themes.

The ominous atmosphere.

It all reflected the environment around them.

When Ozzy joined forces with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, nobody could have predicted they were about to create an entirely new genre.

Yet that’s exactly what happened.

Albums like Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Master of Reality would lay the foundations for everything that followed.

Iron Maiden.

Metallica.

Slayer.

Pantera.

Slipknot.

Ghost.

Bring Me The Horizon.

The influence stretches across generations.

Without Black Sabbath, modern metal simply doesn’t exist.

The exhibition pays tribute to that legacy, showcasing the band’s role in transforming music forever and highlighting Ozzy’s place at the centre of one of the most important cultural movements of the twentieth century.

🎤 From Sabbath Frontman To Solo Superstar

Many musicians spend their entire lives trying to achieve one legendary career.

Ozzy somehow managed two.

After leaving Black Sabbath in 1979, plenty of critics believed his career was finished.

Instead, he launched one of the most successful solo careers in rock history.

Albums such as Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman and No More Tears cemented his status as a global superstar.

Songs like:

🎵 Crazy Train

🎵 Mr. Crowley

🎵 Bark At The Moon

🎵 Mama, I’m Coming Home

🎵 No More Tears

have become permanent fixtures of rock radio and festival playlists.

The exhibition charts this incredible second chapter of Ozzy’s career through rare memorabilia, stage costumes, awards and personal artefacts that showcase just how far the Birmingham lad had travelled.

Standing in front of these items, fans get a real sense of scale.

This isn’t just the story of a successful singer.

It’s the story of someone who became one of the defining figures of modern popular culture.

❤️ Sharon’s Archive Opens The Vault

A huge reason the exhibition feels so personal is thanks to Sharon Osbourne.

Over the years Sharon has carefully preserved an astonishing collection of Ozzy memorabilia.

While many rock artefacts disappear into storage, private collections or auctions, much of Ozzy’s history has been lovingly maintained.

The result is a treasure trove of memories spanning decades.

Tour memorabilia.

Awards.

Photographs.

Personal keepsakes.

Rare items that fans would normally never get the chance to see.

It transforms the exhibition from a simple collection of objects into something far more meaningful.

Every item tells a story.

Every item captures a moment.

Every item represents another chapter in one of rock’s wildest journeys.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 More Than Just A Metal Exhibition

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the exhibition has been the diversity of visitors.

You might expect a queue filled entirely with ageing metalheads wearing faded Sabbath shirts.

And yes, plenty of those have turned up.

But so have families.

Parents.

Children.

Tourists.

Students.

Casual music fans.

People who know Ozzy from television.

People discovering him for the very first time.

That’s the sign of a true cultural icon.

Ozzy’s appeal now stretches far beyond the boundaries of rock music.

He has become part of British culture.

The exhibition serves as a bridge between generations, introducing younger visitors to the music that shaped countless artists while allowing older fans to relive memories from decades of concerts, albums and unforgettable moments.

🦇 Why This Matters Right Now

We’re living in a time where preserving music history feels more important than ever.

Venues are under pressure.

Music collections are being lost.

Countless stories risk disappearing with each passing generation.

Exhibitions like this help ensure that important chapters of cultural history remain accessible.

Heavy metal has often been overlooked by mainstream institutions.

For years, rock fans have argued that the genre deserves the same respect as other forms of art and culture.

The success of Ozzy Osbourne: Working Class Hero proves that argument once and for all.

Nearly half a million visitors don’t turn up out of curiosity.

They turn up because this history matters.

Because this music matters.

Because Ozzy matters.

🎸 Birmingham Finally Celebrates Its Crown Jewel

For too long, Birmingham’s contribution to music history felt underappreciated.

This is the city that gave birth to heavy metal.

A city that produced Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Napalm Death and countless other influential artists.

The success of this exhibition demonstrates what many fans have known for years.

People want to celebrate Birmingham’s musical heritage.

They want to understand where heavy metal came from.

They want to pay tribute to the artists who changed the world.

And no figure represents that story more completely than Ozzy Osbourne.

🔥 The Riff Report Verdict

Whether you’re a lifelong Sabbath fanatic, a casual rock fan, or simply someone interested in extraordinary life stories, Ozzy Osbourne: Working Class Hero deserves a place on your bucket list.

It’s a celebration of music.

A celebration of Birmingham.

A celebration of working-class determination.

And above all else, it’s a celebration of a man who refused to let circumstances define him.

From Aston to arenas.

From factory city to global icon.

From local lad to heavy metal legend.

Ozzy Osbourne’s story is one of the greatest success stories British music has ever produced.

This exhibition captures that journey beautifully.

And as thousands continue to flock through the doors of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, one thing becomes crystal clear:

The Prince Of Darkness isn’t just part of rock history anymore.

He’s part of British history.

And judging by the crowds, his legacy is only getting louder. 🤘🦇🔥

Ozzy Osbourne: Working Class Hero is currently running at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and has been extended until September 2026 due to overwhelming demand.

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
