There are songs you casually throw on in the background while you answer emails.
There are songs you vaguely remember three minutes after they finish.

And then there are songs like โ€œBlack Lakeโ€ by Indominus โ€” tracks that grab you by the collar, drag you into the shadows, and leave you staring at the ceiling at 2am wondering why heavy music somehow understands your entire emotional existence better than actual human beings do.

Hailing from Northern Ireland, Indominus are a savage four-piece extreme metal outfit formed in 2016 from the ashes of ForChristSake. Since emerging from the underground, the band have been carving out their own lane with a vicious blend of death metal, hardcore, and deathcore that hits like a concrete slab dropped from a cathedral roof.

Current line-up:

  • ๐ŸŽค Ricky Boyle โ€” Vocals
  • ๐ŸŽธ Logan McKee โ€” Guitars
  • ๐ŸŽธ Mark Payne โ€” Bass
  • ๐Ÿฅ Oak โ€” Drums

And after hearing Black Lake, itโ€™s very clear this lot are not here to mess about.

Welcome to the latest sonic eruption released through Earache Rcords โ€” a label that has spent decades unleashing absolute chaos upon the world and clearly still has no intention of calming down anytime soon.

Because Black Lake is not calm.
It is not safe.
It is not subtle.

It is a swirling, emotionally charged monster of a track that feels like standing in the middle of a thunderstorm clutching a pint while amplifiers collapse around you in glorious slow motion.

And honestly? Weโ€™re absolutely here for it, mun. ๐Ÿค˜

๐ŸŒ‘ FIRST IMPRESSIONS โ€” THIS THING HITS LIKE A TRAIN IN THE FOG

The moment the track begins, thereโ€™s this overwhelming sense of atmosphere creeping in from every direction. The opening feels cold, ominous, cinematic โ€” like the soundtrack to the final scene of a psychological horror film where everything has gone catastrophically wrong.

Then the riffs arrive.

Not politely.
Not gradually.
Not with a gentle little wink.

They arrive like somebody launching a Marshall stack through your living room wall.

And credit where itโ€™s due โ€” Indominus clearly understand how to weaponise atmosphere and heaviness without sacrificing emotion.

The guitar tone here is HUGE. Properly huge. Thick, layered, gritty, and absolutely dripping with weight. Every chord feels like it carries emotional baggage heavier than a Download Festival camping trolley stuffed with warm lager and regret.

And what makes Black Lake so effective is that it never rushes. The song understands tension. It understands pacing. It knows exactly when to hold back and when to absolutely flatten you.

That balance is what elevates this beyond just โ€œanother heavy songโ€.

This thing breathes.

๐ŸŽธ THE RIFFS โ€” FILTHY, EMOTIONAL, AND ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE

Letโ€™s talk riffs for a second because sweet merciful Ozzyโ€ฆ they are glorious.

Thereโ€™s a real sense of purpose behind every guitar movement here. Nothing feels wasted. No unnecessary technical showing off. No endless noodling designed purely for YouTube reaction videos.

Just proper, emotionally loaded riff work that sinks its claws into your brain and refuses to leave.

At points, the guitars feel suffocatingly heavy โ€” like walls closing in around you. Then suddenly the track opens up into these haunting atmospheric moments that give everything room to breathe before dragging you straight back under again.

Itโ€™s clever songwriting disguised as brute force.

The textures throughout the song are phenomenal too. Layers of distortion, ambience, melody, and crushing low-end all swirl together to create this massive sonic landscape that feels almost immersive.

You donโ€™t simply hear Black Lake.
You stand inside it.

And live? Ohhhhh mateโ€ฆ this thing is going to cause absolute scenes.

You can already picture it:

  • Smoke machines going berserk
  • Venue lights flashing deep blue and crimson
  • Front row screaming every lyric
  • Somebody losing a shoe in the pit
  • One bloke near the bar holding a ยฃ9 pint completely motionless while staring into the void

Peak rock behaviour.

๐Ÿฅ THE RHYTHM SECTION โ€” PURE CONTROLLED DESTRUCTION

Now letโ€™s give some love to the rhythm section because this track would collapse without that monstrous foundation underneath it.

The bass tone is absolutely disgusting โ€” and we mean that in the best possible way.

It rumbles beneath everything like distant thunder, constantly pushing the song forward while adding this dark undercurrent that makes the entire track feel heavier and more dangerous.

Meanwhile the drums hit with the force of somebody throwing kettlebells down a staircase.

Thereโ€™s restraint where needed, chaos where necessary, and enough punch throughout the mix to make your speakers question whether they actually want to continue living.

The percussion especially shines during the bigger atmospheric moments. Rather than overcrowding the track, the drums work with the mood, enhancing the tension until the inevitable explosions hit even harder.

Itโ€™s smart. Itโ€™s dynamic. And it absolutely slaps.

๐ŸŽค VOCALS โ€” RAW EMOTION WITH TEETH

The vocal performance on Black Lake is genuinely one of the standout elements here.

Thereโ€™s pain in this delivery.
Thereโ€™s rage.
Thereโ€™s exhaustion.
Thereโ€™s menace.

And somehow it all blends together perfectly.

Ricky Boyle absolutely tears through this track with a vocal performance that feels completely unfiltered and emotionally loaded. Whether heโ€™s dragging listeners into eerie atmospheric passages or detonating into full-force aggression, thereโ€™s a constant sense of tension simmering beneath every word.

Thereโ€™s a real sense of vulnerability buried beneath all the heaviness too, which gives the track genuine emotional weight.

Thatโ€™s the difference between music thatโ€™s heavyโ€ฆ and music that actually stays with you.

Too many modern heavy tracks focus purely on sounding brutal while forgetting to actually make listeners feel something.

Black Lake absolutely does both.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ THE ATMOSPHERE โ€” SADNESS, CHAOS, AND MIDNIGHT MOTORWAY ENERGY

This song feels like:

  • Driving through rain at midnight
  • Watching festival lights disappear in the distance
  • Walking home after the encore with your ears ringing
  • Staring out of train windows pretending youโ€™re in a music video
  • Realising your entire personality has been shaped by riffs and emotional damage

Thereโ€™s a melancholy running underneath the entire track that gives it enormous replay value. The darkness never feels fake or theatrical. It feels lived in.

And that atmosphere is where Indominus truly shine.

This isnโ€™t heavy music trying to be edgy for the sake of it. This feels genuine. Human. Honest.

It captures that strange emotional release that only great rock and metal can provide โ€” the feeling of turning pain, frustration, anxiety, or loneliness into something loud enough to shake the walls.

Thatโ€™s why songs like this matter.

๐ŸŽฅ THIS TRACK DESERVES A MASSIVE LIVE SHOW

You can instantly tell Black Lake was made by people who understand live music.

This thing screams for giant festival stages.

Picture it:

  • Thick fog rolling across the crowd
  • Thousands of phone lights in the air
  • Massive LED visuals behind the band
  • Fans screaming every word back into the darkness
  • Rain somehow starting at the exact emotional breakdown section because British weather always wants to join the setlist

Honestly, this could absolutely become one of those songs that transforms into an entirely different beast live.

The dynamics alone are built for crowd reactions.

And if Indominus unleash this at places like Download Festival or Bloodstock Open Air, donโ€™t be surprised if the entire field collectively loses its mind.

๐Ÿป FINAL THOUGHTS โ€” INDOMINUS HAVE CREATED A BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN MONSTER

Black Lake is the kind of song that reminds you why we all fell in love with heavy music in the first place.

Not because itโ€™s trendy.
Not because itโ€™ll go viral for 12 seconds on TikTok.
Not because some algorithm decided guitars are fashionable again.

Because it FEELS something.

It has weight.
It has atmosphere.
It has soul.
And most importantlyโ€ฆ it has riffs bigger than a Greggs queue after a Welsh rugby match.

Indominus have managed to craft something crushingly heavy while still feeling emotional, cinematic, vulnerable, and genuinely immersive.

Thatโ€™s not easy to pull off.

But Black Lake absolutely nails it.

Turn the lights off.
Turn the volume up.
Annoy the neighbours.
Ascend into the darkness. ๐ŸŒ‘๐Ÿ”ฅ

โญ THE RIFF REPORT FINAL RATING

๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ‘ โ€” 5/5 BLACK LAKES OF DOOM

A colossal, emotionally charged slab of darkness that proves heavy music is still capable of hitting you right in the soul while simultaneously caving your chest in with riffs.

Proper job, butt. ๐Ÿค˜
