Some records are designed to make you feel good.
Some are built for radio play, shiny festival stages, viral TikTok clips and sponsored energy drink adverts featuring lads in backwards caps pretending to like breakdowns.
And then there’s The Blissful Sleep Of Ignorance by Blüdwyrm — a record that sounds like it was forged deep underground beneath Dorset’s ancient hills by three men surviving entirely on fuzz pedals, sleep deprivation and the lingering smell of damp rehearsal rooms.
This thing doesn’t sparkle.
It festers.
And bloody hell, it’s magnificent. 🖤
Released on June 5th 2026 through Road To Masochist, Blüdwyrm’s debut EP is an oppressive, riff-caked descent into sludge-covered misery, packed with world-ending doom grooves, suffocating atmosphere and the kind of emotional honesty that leaves bruises long after the music stops.
This isn’t background music.
This is the soundtrack to:
- staring at the ceiling at 3am
- dragging yourself through another brutal week
- walking home after a gig in sideways Welsh rain
- existential dread in a leather jacket
- and finding strange comfort in absolute sonic devastation
Proper cheerful stuff, mun. 🤘
🌑 FROM DORSET’S WOODLANDS COMES SOMETHING HORRIBLE
You could be forgiven for thinking Dorset would produce folk bands singing about cider and sunsets.
Instead, Blüdwyrm have emerged sounding like the earth itself has become furious.
Despite only forming in 2025, the trio have already started building serious momentum in the UK underground metal scene thanks to their devastating live performances and refusal to clean up their sound for anybody.
This isn’t polished doom for trendy playlists.
This is dirt-under-the-fingernails sludge metal.
The kind of music that smells faintly of:
- warm tube amps
- old beer carpets
- wet denim jackets
- and smoke machines fighting for their lives in tiny venues
They’ve already shared stages with heavy underground names including:
- Witchsorrow
- Viking Skull
- Mephistofeles
- Komatsu
- Bile Caster
- Nomadic Rituals
- Bismut
…and every show seems to leave audiences looking like they’ve either experienced enlightenment or survived industrial machinery collapsing on them.
Possibly both.
⚰️ THE SOUND OF THE WORLD SLOWLY COLLAPSING
Blüdwyrm exist in that glorious swamp where:
- doom metal
- sludge
- stoner fuzz
- emotional despair
- and feedback-drenched chaos
all collide together in slow motion.
But what makes The Blissful Sleep Of Ignorance stand out isn’t simply the heaviness — although make no mistake, this thing weighs roughly the same as a collapsed cathedral.
It’s the atmosphere.
Everything about this EP feels wounded.
Not fake Instagram sadness.
Not carefully curated “dark aesthetics”.
Real exhaustion.
Real frustration.
Real emotional weight.
You can hear it in every dragging riff, every anguished vocal line and every collapsing drum fill.
Blüdwyrm don’t sound like they’re performing misery.
They sound like they’ve lived inside it.
And that honesty gives the EP an intensity that polished modern metal often struggles to reach.
🪦 TRACK BY TRACK THROUGH THE FILTH
🔥 “Preacher Of My Own Demise”
The opening track arrives like a warning siren from the apocalypse.
A huge rolling riff lumbers into view with filthy stoner swagger before gradually mutating into something uglier and heavier. The groove is hypnotic at first — almost inviting — before the whole thing collapses into sludge-soaked darkness.
The vocals snarl and bleed through the mix like somebody desperately trying to claw their way out of a grave.
Meanwhile the guitars feel absolutely colossal, dragging themselves through layers of distortion and grime while the rhythm section crushes everything beneath it.
This isn’t a song.
It’s a controlled demolition.
🌫 “Isolate”
If the first track kicks the door open, “Isolate” traps you inside.
This is pure oppressive doom misery at its finest.
Slow.
Relentless.
Emotionally suffocating.
The pacing here is absolutely masterful. Blüdwyrm understand something many younger sludge bands forget — heaviness isn’t about speed or technical showing off.
It’s about tension.
And “Isolate” builds tension like a storm cloud hanging over a festival field.
The riffs pulse forward with funeral-procession inevitability while the vocals sound utterly broken, drifting across the track like ghostly transmissions from somebody losing the battle against themselves.
Honestly, listening to this at full volume in headphones should probably come with some kind of emotional support warning.
🦴 “The Vultures”
This track opens with a ragged groove that feels almost deceptively loose and swaggering.
For a brief moment, you think Blüdwyrm might let you breathe.
They do not.
The song slowly deteriorates into one of the heaviest moments on the EP, sinking deeper and deeper into suffocating sludge until the riffs feel physically crushing.
And then — out of nowhere — comes this wailing, anguished solo that cuts through the murk like the final scream before impact.
It’s genuinely haunting stuff.
You can practically picture an entire room full of doom fans slowly nodding in unison while the venue ceiling drips with condensation and spilled lager.
That’s the beauty of sludge gigs, mun.
Everyone looks miserable.
Everyone’s having the time of their life.
☣️ “Pesticides”
Good lord.
“Pesticides” is the sound of absolute collapse.
The closing track feels less like a song and more like wandering through the aftermath of emotional and societal ruin while amplifiers scream in the distance.
The riffs are enormous.
The atmosphere poisonous.
The feedback agonising.
There’s a deep sadness running underneath this track that elevates it far beyond standard sludge brutality. Beneath all the distortion and devastation lies something genuinely human.
That emotional core is what gives The Blissful Sleep Of Ignorance its addictive quality.
You don’t just listen to this EP.
You feel dragged through it.
And somehow, by the end, you come out feeling lighter.
Battered, yes.
Emotionally flattened, absolutely.
But lighter.
Catharsis through volume.
🩸 PERFECTLY IMPERFECT
One of the greatest strengths of this EP is that it never feels sanitised.
Modern heavy music can sometimes feel too polished, too quantised, too terrified of imperfections.
Blüdwyrm embrace the grime.
The rough edges stay intact.
The feedback remains screaming.
The chaos feels natural.
And because of that, the EP feels alive.
There’s something deeply refreshing about hearing a band that prioritises atmosphere and emotional honesty over perfection.
This isn’t metal designed by committee.
It’s three musicians throwing every ounce of frustration, pain and passion directly into the amplifier stack.
🍺 THE UK SLUDGE SCENE IS ALIVE AND FILTHY
The UK underground doom/sludge scene has been absolutely thriving lately, and Blüdwyrm feel like the latest horrifying mutation clawing its way to the surface.
There’s a real hunger growing again for:
- ugly riffs
- underground venues
- emotionally raw heavy music
- DIY ethics
- and bands that genuinely sound dangerous live
No gimmicks.
No influencer nonsense.
No pretending.
Just riffs heavy enough to crack concrete.
And honestly?
We need more of that.
Especially in a world where half the internet thinks adding one breakdown means you’ve reinvented heavy music.
Blüdwyrm understand the true magic of doom and sludge:
patience,
weight,
atmosphere,
and emotional devastation.

🤘 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT
The Blissful Sleep Of Ignorance is one of those rare debut releases that feels fully realised from the start.
It’s bleak without being boring.
Heavy without becoming repetitive.
Emotional without sounding forced.
Most importantly — it feels genuine.
Blüdwyrm aren’t chasing trends.
They’re dragging listeners into their own collapsing world and daring them to survive it.
And honestly?
We’ll happily crawl back for another round.
This EP is:
- ugly
- wounded
- oppressive
- painfully human
- and absolutely colossal
Exactly what doom/sludge metal should be. 🩸🔥
When June 5th arrives, make sure your neighbours are prepared, your speakers are ready and your emotional stability is already questionable.
Because Blüdwyrm are about to make everything a whole lot heavier.
