There are festivals… and then there are underground metal gatherings that feel like sacred rituals held in dark rooms fuelled entirely by riffs, sweat, beer, patched battle jackets, and pure stubborn heavy metal spirit.

Hordes X falls firmly into the second category.

This September, Scotland’s oldest metal festival storms back into Dundee for its 16th edition, and honestly, the underground scene should already be making travel plans immediately because this lineup announcement has landed like a sledgehammer to the chest. ⚡🍺

On Friday 18th and Saturday 19th September 2026, Hordes X once again takes over both Hidden and Music Hall Dundee, delivering two full days of extreme music featuring established names, underground heroes, Scottish exclusives, long-awaited debuts, and bands heavy enough to crack the foundations beneath the city itself.

And somehow… despite the economy currently resembling a collapsing bin fire… tickets are still only £15.

Fifteen quid.

That’s not a festival ticket anymore. That’s basically community service for metalheads. 😅

⚔️ SIXTEEN YEARS OF UNDERGROUND METAL MADNESS

Sixteen editions deep and Hordes X has become one of those festivals that underground fans genuinely treasure.

It hasn’t lost its soul.
It hasn’t turned into a corporate influencer playground.
Nobody’s pretending a ukulele indie act belongs between death metal bands “for diversity”.

It’s still heavy.
Still underground.
Still built by people who clearly love metal.

And in a world where independent festivals are constantly battling rising costs, venue pressures, touring struggles, and enough logistical nightmares to make any promoter cry into their Iron Maiden mug, the continued survival of Hordes X honestly deserves respect. 🖤

Because festivals like this matter.

They’re where new bands are discovered.
They’re where friendships form.
They’re where battle jackets gain new patches.
They’re where you end up chatting to strangers outside smoking areas about obscure doom demos from 2004.

This is grassroots metal culture still alive and kicking.

And Dundee is about to become the centre of it once again.

🍺 TWO DAYS OF RIFFS ACROSS TWO VENUES

The festival kicks off on Friday 18th September with a warm-up event at Hidden, before the main event explodes across Music Hall Dundee and Hidden on Saturday.

One of the genuinely brilliant things about Hordes X is the fact they continue operating with NO CLASHES between stages.

Honestly, more festivals need to pay attention here.

No heartbreaking decisions.
No sprinting between venues.
No hearing your favourite breakdown from three streets away while trapped in a queue for chips.

Just proper metal appreciation from start to finish.

That means fans can fully soak in:
🎸 every riff
🥁 every blastbeat
🍺 every pint
😈 every filthy doom-laden moment

Without missing half the festival experience.

That alone makes Hordes X stand out in 2026’s increasingly overcrowded festival landscape.

🎟 TICKETS ARE CHEAPER THAN YOUR WEEKLY MEAL DEAL HABIT

Let’s say this loudly for the people at the back:

£15 EARLY BIRD TICKETS.

For:
✅ Friday warm-up show
✅ Full Saturday festival access
✅ Multiple venues
✅ No clashes
✅ Scottish exclusives
✅ Underground legends
✅ New discoveries
✅ Neck pain that’ll last until October

Absolute bargain.

Seriously, gigs nowadays regularly cost £40–£70 before you’ve even looked at transport, parking, or the emotional devastation of venue beer prices.

Meanwhile Hordes X is over here saying:
“Here’s two days of metal devastation for fifteen quid, ya filthy animals.”

We love to see it.

🎫 Tickets available now:
https://www.eventim-light.com/uk/a/64e4bd9fe21f656bd75a0c93/e/69ef7d2904285c8ef6d9dbcb

A small number of Friday-only tickets will be available on the door, but full weekend ticket holders get priority access — and honestly, with this lineup already shaping up the way it is, we wouldn’t risk waiting around.

💀 DE PROFUNDIS RETURN FOR A SCOTTISH EXCLUSIVE HEADLINE SET

Right then…
Let’s talk about the first major announcement.

London death metal veterans De Profundis are officially returning to Hordes X for the first time in TEN YEARS.

And they’re not coming back quietly.

Having previously destroyed the second stage back in 2013 and 2016, the band now return for a Scottish exclusive headline appearance, armed with twenty years of extreme metal experience and a rejuvenated lineup that’s been breathing fresh hellfire into the band.

Their recent EP, The Gospel Of Rot, proved there’s still plenty of venom left in the tank, combining technical brutality with atmosphere, aggression, and enough crushing riffage to level small buildings.

The band themselves said:

“It’s been a decade since we last played Hordes. Four releases later, we’re back and spreading the Gospel of Rot further north than ever before…”

That sentence alone sounds like the intro narration to the apocalypse.

Fans can expect a career-spanning set pulling material from across two decades of extremity — which means older fans will be throwing themselves into chaos while newer fans finally experience the band live in full destructive mode.

This could very easily become one of the defining performances of the entire weekend.

⚔️ CNOC AN TURSA ARE READY TO SUMMON THE STORM

Now THIS announcement feels special.

Scottish black/folk metal legends Cnoc An Tursa will make their long-awaited Dundee debut at Hordes X 2026 — and there’s a very good chance this becomes one of the most atmospheric sets the festival has ever hosted.

After nearly a decade away from the spotlight, the band have returned stronger than ever with their incredible album A Cry For The Slain, released through Apocalyptic Witchcraft.

And the reaction worldwide has been massive.

Reviews and praise have poured in from:
🌍 Norway
🌍 Germany
🌍 Australia
🌍 Canada
🌍 Austria
🌍 The UK

…and basically every frost-covered corner of the global underground metal scene.

Their music blends black metal intensity with haunting folk atmosphere and emotional weight in a way that feels properly immersive.

This isn’t background music.
This is the sort of set that pulls people completely into its world.

You can already picture it:
🌫 dim lights
⚔️ eerie melodies
🥁 pounding drums
🍺 metalheads raising horns into the air
🌧 probably Scottish weather trying to kill everyone outside

Absolute perfection.

And for Dundee metal fans, this being their FIRST EVER appearance in the city makes it even bigger.

🦉 OWLCRUSHER ARRIVE TO CRUSH SPINES AND SOULS

And then there’s Owlcrusher.

Good lord.

Northern Ireland’s blackened doom/sludge monsters will make their first ever Scottish appearance at Hordes X — and judging by the band’s statement, they fully intend to leave emotional and structural damage behind them.

Describing their sound as:

“Gut-rupturing low end, subterranean vocal utterances, and an overwhelming sense of disquiet and unease…”

Honestly?
That sounds magnificent.

For fans of:
🔥 suffocating doom
🔥 crushing sludge
🔥 terrifying atmosphere
🔥 riffs slower than a Monday morning after Download Festival

Owlcrusher are going to be absolutely essential viewing.

The band are currently preparing their second album, and Hordes X feels like the perfect environment for their return to live performance after a prolonged absence.

Expect volume.
Expect dread.
Expect your internal organs to vibrate.

🍻 THE BEAUTY OF UNDERGROUND FESTIVALS

There’s something special about festivals like Hordes X that giant commercial events simply can’t replicate.

It’s personal.

You actually talk to people.
You discover bands you’ve never heard before.
You bump into musicians at the bar.
You end up buying merch from bands directly while discussing obscure Celtic black metal demos from 2007.

No VIP fences.
No influencer nonsense.
No fake “rock aesthetic” branding designed by marketing teams who think Slipknot is a clothing company.

Just real metal fans supporting real heavy music.

And honestly, in 2026, that kind of authenticity matters more than ever.

🤘 WHY 2026 COULD BE HORDES X’S BIGGEST YEAR YET

The underground metal scene across the UK has been absolutely exploding recently.

More independent bands are touring.
Smaller festivals are building stronger communities.
Fans are actively searching for grassroots events that actually care about music rather than social media metrics.

Hordes X sits perfectly in that space.

The festival feels like a direct answer to bloated modern events:
🖤 affordable tickets
🖤 carefully curated bands
🖤 underground atmosphere
🖤 proper scene spirit

And with Scottish exclusives, debuts, and returning legends already confirmed, this lineup still feels like it’s only warming up.

If this first announcement is anything to go by…
the next waves could get VERY tasty indeed.

🔥 THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

Hordes X 2026 already looks like one of the underground metal events of the year.

De Profundis returning for a Scottish exclusive headline set.
Cnoc An Tursa finally bringing their blackened folk majesty to Dundee.
Owlcrusher preparing to flatten Scotland with doom-soaked devastation.

All for fifteen quid.

Mental.

Dundee is about to become the loudest place in Scotland this September — and honestly, we wouldn’t want it any other way.

Get your tickets early.
Charge your phone.
Stretch your neck muscles.
Hydrate responsibly.
Prepare for riffs.

We’ll see you in the pit, butt. 🤘🔥🍺

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
