Some bands play Saturday Night Live multiple times, collect a mug, shake Lorne Michaelsโ€™ hand, and ride off into late-night legend.

Rage Against The Machine did it onceโ€ฆ and somehow managed to get themselves banned, detained, and escorted out of 30 Rock like absolute revolutionaries. Proper tidy chaos, mun ๐Ÿค˜

The Night That Everything Went Sideways

Cast your mind back to 1996. Rage were booked as the musical guests on SNL, with the episode hosted by Steve Forbes โ€” billionaire businessman, Republican presidential candidate, and about as ideologically opposite to Rage as itโ€™s possible to be without causing sparks.

Naturally, Rage did what Rage do.

The band planned to hang upside-down American flags on their guitar amps โ€” a recognised symbol of national distress and protest. The SNL crew clearly panicked and removed the flags moments before the band went live.

Rage still stormed the stage and ripped through โ€œBulls On Paradeโ€ like it was a declaration of war. Studio 8H survived. Just.

โ€œWeโ€™re Gonna Cut Your Second Songโ€ฆโ€

After the performance, the band were informed their second song โ€” โ€œBullet In The Headโ€ โ€” had been cut because the show was โ€œrunning longโ€.

According to guitarist Tom Morello, speaking in the Peacock documentary Ladies & Gentlemenโ€ฆ 50 Years of SNL Music, the band were then left alone in their dressing room.

โ€œThat was their mistake.โ€

Tim Commerford vs The American Flag (Kind Of)

Bassist Tim Commerford โ€” a man not known for quietly accepting injustice โ€” took one of the removed flags, ripped it up, knotted it into a ball, and marched across the hallway to Steve Forbesโ€™ dressing room.

The only problem?

Steve Forbes wasnโ€™t there.

His family was.

Tim launched the improvised flag-ball projectile, which thankfully fell apart mid-air, hurting no one and mostly just causing existential confusion.

Enter: The Secret Service ๐Ÿšจ

Because Forbes was a US presidential candidate, this instantly escalated from โ€œrock band being rock bandโ€ to:

๐Ÿšจ HALLWAY FULL OF SECRET SERVICE ๐Ÿšจ

Morello recalled that Rage were locked inside their dressing room, agents flooded the corridor, Forbesโ€™ family were protected, and the band were eventually escorted out of 30 Rock and deposited onto the pavement like unwanted gig flyers.

They did not appear in the end-of-show farewells.

Shocking, that.

The Most Rage Ending Possible

Despite all that?

โ€œI still went to the after party.โ€

Of course he did. Wouldnโ€™t be Rage otherwise.

Why Rage Were Never Invited Back

Rage Against The Machine have never returned to Saturday Night Live since that night โ€” and honestly, if youโ€™re going to get banned from a cornerstone of American television, being escorted out by the Secret Service after protesting a billionaire politician feels extremely on-brand.

No compromises.
No apologies.
No second song.

Just riffs, resistance, and one very tense late-night TV corridor ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

Editor-In-Riffโ€™s Take:
This is why Rage arenโ€™t just a band โ€” theyโ€™re a historical incident with amplifiers. SNL survived. America survived. The flag survived. Late-night TV? Still traumatised.

More rock โ€™nโ€™ roll chaos soon, butt.
