Some albums arrive with hype.
Others arrive with heart.
This one lands with both hands on your chest.
What started as a spark of love turned into a full-blown musical uprising.
After the initial idea of honouring Matt Long through music took shape, his mum, Fiona, had a thought that changed everything. Why not make this bigger? Why not turn grief into something that could give back, loud and meaningful, to the very place that supported Matt through his fight?
The result: a full-scale fundraiser album for the cancer ward at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, where Matt was treated — powered entirely by friendship, respect, and the kind of community spirit that only music can summon 🎸✨
Music doesn’t stop when the player leaves the room.
How the Tribute Began
The spark came from musician and long-time family friend Dudley Ross, who also happens to be the UK booker and tour manager for Josh Smith, second guitarist to Joe Bonamassa.
Dudley floated a simple but powerful idea:
What if Joe — Matt’s absolute guitar hero — recorded a part on one of Matt’s original songs?
Thanks to long-standing friendships in the blues world, the idea wasn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. Matt’s dad, Paul Long, previously worked as producer on the Paul Jones Blues Show, collaborating with Joe Bonamassa during his early UK days. The Long family had shared backstage moments, conversations, and memories with Joe over the years.
Still… when Joe said yes, it hit different.
When grief met groove, the blues did what it’s always done best.
A Spark That Became a Family Affair
What started as a simple act of love quickly grew teeth, soul, and purpose.
After the idea of honouring Matt Long through his music first took shape, his mum Fiona had a thought that shifted everything. Why keep it small? Why not turn loss into something that could give back — loudly, honestly, and with heart — to the very place that supported Matt through his fight?
That thought became With A Little Help From My Friends: a full-scale fundraising album supporting the cancer ward at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, where Matt was treated.
Built entirely on friendship, respect, and the deep-rooted traditions of the blues, this record is proof that when musicians rally together, something bigger than music can happen 🎸💙
Matt Long — The Man Behind the Songs
Before this became an album.
Before it became a fundraiser.
Before it became a movement.
There was Matt.
Matt Long was a songwriter, guitarist, bandmate, and son whose life revolved around music and the people drawn to it. He wasn’t chasing hype or headlines — he was chasing feel. Tone mattered. Space mattered. Saying something honest mattered most of all.
The blues wasn’t a costume for Matt; it was his natural language. His songs leaned into emotion over ego, melody over flash, and lyrics that spoke plainly but landed heavy. You can hear lived experience in his writing — empathy, reflection, resilience — the stuff the blues has always been built on.
The Fight, the Music, and the Community
Matt was diagnosed with cancer far too young, a moment that hit his family and the wider music community like a punch to the chest. What followed was a relentless, exhausting fight — hospital visits, treatment cycles, hope, setbacks, and long stretches of waiting.
Through it all, music never left him.
Even during treatment, Matt stayed connected to the scene — writing when he could, talking gear, swapping songs, and staying part of the community that had always felt like home. Benefit gigs were organised across the country to help fund additional treatment options, and musicians turned up in force.
Those nights weren’t charity shows.
They were acts of solidarity.
Rooted in the Blues (Because the Blues Is Truth)
At its core, this album lives and breathes the blues — not just as a genre, but as a way of surviving hard truths.
The blues has always taken life’s most painful moments and turned them into something shared. Long before it filled clubs and festivals, it existed to tell the truth plainly and play it honestly.
That spirit runs through every groove here.
Matt’s songwriting sat squarely in that tradition. Whether slow-burning and reflective or gritty and driving, his songs always served the feeling first — the purest blues instinct of all.
From One Idea to a Double-Vinyl Blues Statement
Things escalated quickly. In the best possible way.
What could have been a single tribute track grew into a double vinyl album, featuring 16 original Matt Long songs, each reimagined by artists who stood by him during his illness and played benefit gigs across the country last summer.
The response from the music community was instant and overwhelming. No hesitation. No half-measures. People showed up — properly.
Two tracks retain Matt’s original vocals, now lifted sky-high by deeply soulful guitar work from Joe Bonamassa and Walter Trout. These moments don’t feel like guest spots — they feel like quiet conversations between players who understood exactly what these songs meant.
Blues Is a Conversation, Not a Competition
One of the defining traits of blues music is conversation — guitar answering vocal, rhythm sections breathing with the song, musicians listening as much as they play.
That philosophy guided this entire album.
Every artist treated Matt’s songs like well-loved blues standards: respected, understood, and carefully expanded rather than overwritten. You’ll hear warm, expressive guitar tones, solos that tell stories instead of showing off, vocals full of grit and soul, and rhythm sections that swing and breathe naturally.
This is blues played the right way — in service of the song.
A Roll Call of Modern Blues & Soul
The album reads like a snapshot of today’s British blues and roots scene — artists blending tradition with modern voices, each bringing their own flavour while keeping Matt’s songwriting front and centre.

Teachers, Mentors & The Blues Lineage
Blues survives because it’s passed hand to hand.
This album also features guitar solos from two of Matt’s tutors at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford — Nic Meier and Nat Martin.
Their presence says everything. Blues isn’t frozen in time — it’s taught, shared, and carried forward. Teachers become collaborators. Students become peers. The circle stays unbroken.
Where Care Met Compassion
Much of Matt’s treatment took place at Royal Surrey County Hospital, where the care he received left a lasting impression on his family — not just clinically, but humanly.
Nurses, doctors, and staff treated Matt with dignity, warmth, and compassion at a time when those things mattered as much as medicine. That’s why this album gives back there — not symbolically, but directly.
More Than an Album
This isn’t just a tribute record.
It’s a blues document.
It’s community pressed into vinyl.
It’s proof that music scenes aren’t just scenes — they’re families.
Matt Long’s voice is still here.
His songs are still breathing.
And thanks to an army of friends, his legacy now lives on — not in silence, but in sound.
Honest. Soulful. Unpolished where it matters.
That’s the blues.
