Today, butt, we turn the amps all the way up to 11 for a day that actually matters โ International Day of Disabled People. A day to celebrate strength, identity, resilience, community, creativity, and every single disabled person who keeps this big chaotic world spinning. ๐๐ฅ
And letโs be honestโฆ the music scene wouldnโt be HALF as powerful, emotional, innovative, or downright lush without disabled fans, musicians, crew members, journalists, photographers, organisers, and advocates rocking the front lines every single day. ๐ฅ๐ธ๐ฅ
We see you. We celebrate you. And the pit is ALWAYS open for you, mun. โค๏ธ
๐ชโฟ DISABLED PEOPLE BELONG IN EVERY PART OF MUSIC โ FRONT ROW, BACKSTAGE, AND BEYOND
Music is for everyone โ not just the able-bodied crowd smashing pints and circle pits. Whether youโre navigating gigs with mobility aids, chronic pain, sensory needs, learning disabilities, neurodivergence, mental health conditions, fatigue, hearing loss, visual impairment, or anything else โ your place in this community is proper job secure. ๐คโค๏ธโ๐ฅ
Youโre not an afterthought.
Youโre not a burden.
Youโre a fundamental part of the rock and metal family.
(And half the time youโre the ones showing the rest of us how to mosh responsiblyโฆ tidy that! ๐ )
๐ค THE ROCK & METAL WORLD HAS BEEN SHAPED BY DISABLED TALENT
Letโs not forget the legends:
Rick Allen (Def Leppard) โ drummer god after losing an arm ๐ฅ๐ฅ Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) โ created HEAVY METAL after losing his fingertips ๐ค Ian Curtis (Joy Division) โ chronic illness shaping some of the most emotional lyrics ever Ozzy Osbourne โ Parkinsonโs hasnโt stopped him from being the Prince of Darkness ๐ค Joni Mitchell โ polio survivor turned songwriting icon
Disabled artists donโt โovercomeโ โ they innovate, redefine, and change music history.
๐ช ACCESS AT FESTIVALS & VENUES STILL NEEDS SORTING โ AND WEโLL SHOUT ABOUT IT
Look, munโฆ we LOVE a good UK festival. But accessibility?
Some do it well. Some try.
And some are about as useful as a waterproof tent from Poundland. ๐
The Riff Report is proudly โ and loudly โ committed to:
๐ฅ Calling out bad access
๐ฅ Praising venues that get it right
๐ฅ Championing better viewing platforms
๐ฅ Fighting for fairer disabled ticketing
๐ฅ Supporting disabled fansโ stories
๐ฅ Making festivals less โchaos simulatorโ and more โinclusive partyโ
Because rock music without accessibility is just noise โ not community.
๐งก TODAY IS ABOUT CELEBRATION, NOT TOKENISM
This day isnโt about pity. Itโs not about โinspiration porn.โ
Itโs about recognising the power, culture, identity, and humanity of disabled people all over the world.
Disabled people:
โจ Create
โจ Organise
โจ Lead
โจ Love
โจ Protest
โจ Build
โจ Thrive
And they do it while navigating a world that still throws ridiculous barriers at them โ from broken lifts to inaccessible toilets to condescending attitudes that drive us all tamping. ๐ซ
๐ถ TO EVERY DISABLED READER, FAN, MUSICIAN, FRIEND & FOLLOWERโฆ DIOLCH.
Thank you for being here.
Thank you for sharing gigs, stories, chaos, and riffs with us.
Thank you for making this community richer and more colourful.
You make The Riff Report family lush as you like, mun. ๐
๐ฅ KEEP FIGHTING. KEEP SHINING. KEEP BEING LOUD.
Whether you rock a wheelchair, cane, hearing aid, assistance dog, neurodivergent brain, chronic illness toolkit, prosthetics, or ANYTHING else โ youโre part of this scene.
And weโll shout it from the mountain tops (Steelhouse Mountain preferably ๐๐๏ธ):
DISABLED PEOPLE ROCK. ALWAYS HAVE. ALWAYS WILL. ๐ค๐โฟ๐ฅ
