Bands fall apart for all sorts of reasons — ego clashes, personal issues, wild partying, simmering rivalries. But every now and then, someone gets the boot for the most brutal reason of all:
👉 “Mate… you’re just not good enough.”
It’s the kind of dismissal that stings harder than a power-chord to the face, but it’s happened more times than you’d think. From punk icons to pop personalities, drummers to frontmen, the music world is full of musicians who found themselves pushed aside for not being up to scratch — or at least being perceived that way.
Here’s a full Riff Report breakdown of the artists featured in the image, with added history, context, and a little bit of nerdy music trivia to keep the story spicy. 🤘
🎤 GLEN MATLOCK
Fired from the Sex Pistols for “liking The Beatles”… or was he?
The official story floated by the Pistols was that Matlock got kicked because he liked The Beatles — a hilariously punk-rock reason… if it were true.
In reality, Glen was the most musically trained member of the band and co-wrote most of their biggest tunes (Anarchy in the U.K., God Save the Queen). What really happened was:
- Matlock wanted the Pistols to be tighter musically
- Johnny Rotten and manager Malcolm McLaren wanted chaos, not musicianship
- Tensions between Matlock and the more media-driven punk image led to the split
Matlock later played with The Rich Kids, Iggy Pop, and eventually reunited with the Sex Pistols multiple times. Not too shabby for someone “fired for liking The Beatles.”
🥁 PETE BEST
Booted from The Beatles for not keeping up
Pete Best will forever be known as the guy who lost the biggest job in rock history. When The Beatles were still a struggling Liverpool band, Best was their drummer — but producer George Martin wasn’t sold.
Martin said Best’s drumming was “weak,” and the band were secretly already vibing more with a certain Ringo Starr.
Key reasons behind Best’s dismissal:
- He wasn’t tight enough for studio recording
- He didn’t gel musically with the other three
- Ringo simply fit the chemistry better
The move devastated Pete, but he eventually found peace, writing books and embracing his legacy as the “unluckiest Beatle.”
⚡ DAVE MUSTAINE
Thrown out of Metallica for alcoholism, fighting & volatility
Before founding Megadeth and becoming a thrash legend, Dave Mustaine’s time in Metallica ended abruptly when the band dumped him via bus ticket.
Reasons for the firing included:
- Increasingly dangerous drinking
- Violent outbursts on tour
- Pulling knives on bandmates
- Clashing personalities (especially with James Hetfield)
Music skill wasn’t Dave’s issue — he was technically better than the rest at the time — but his behaviour made him impossible to manage.
Mustaine then channelled all that rage into Megadeth, giving us one of metal’s most legendary rivalries.
🎸 JASON EVERMAN
Fired from BOTH Nirvana and Soundgarden… for being moody
Jason Everman has one of the most bizarre resumés in grunge:
- Briefly in Nirvana
- Briefly in Soundgarden
- Played on none of their big releases
- Got fired twice
In Nirvana, Everman’s vibe reportedly didn’t mesh — Kurt Cobain described him as “moody” and distant. Soundgarden cited similar problems before letting him go.
Everman later went on to do something even rarer for a rock musician:
👉 he joined U.S. Special Forces and fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The ultimate career pivot.
🥁 CHAD CHANNING
Let go from Nirvana for “not hitting hard enough”
Before Dave Grohl, Nirvana had Chad Channing — and while he played on Bleach and early sessions for Nevermind, Kurt and Krist weren’t feeling his style.
Channing was:
- Too soft of a player for the heavier sound Nirvana wanted
- More into groove; Nirvana wanted brute force
- Never fully aligned with the musical direction
Chad left amicably and later received a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame mention — though not an induction.
🎤 TRISHA PAYTAS
Booted from a girl group for behavioural issues
Before becoming an internet personality, Trisha had a brief stint in a girl group called BLndsundoll4mj (yes, seriously). Her time in the band didn’t last long:
- Frequent conflicts
- Refusal to rehearse
- Missed performances
- On-set drama
She pivoted into YouTube fame instead, proving that being fired from a band doesn’t stop you from becoming extremely online.
🎙️ SCOTT WEILAND
Fired from Stone Temple Pilots for unreliability
Scott Weiland’s voice helped define ’90s alt-rock — but his battles with addiction and erratic behaviour repeatedly pulled the band apart.
Reasons for the firing included:
- Missing rehearsals
- Unpredictable live performances
- Showing up intoxicated
- Long-running internal conflict
Despite his issues, Weiland remains one of rock’s most iconic frontmen, especially for his work in STP and Velvet Revolver.
🎬 GEORGE LAZENBY
Fired from the James Bond franchise for “arrogance”
Yes — he’s not a musician, so he sticks out in this list, but the story fits the theme:
Lazenby starred in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), but behind the scenes:
- He clashed with producers
- Rejected promotional duties
- Became notoriously difficult on set
- Declared Bond “old-fashioned”
He was shown the door, ending the shortest Bond run in history.
🎤 KIM SHATTUCK
Fired from The Pixies after only a few months
Kim Shattuck, formerly of The Muffs, briefly joined The Pixies as a touring bassist in 2013 — but things unraveled quickly.
Reported reasons:
- Jumping into the crowd during a show (which the band disliked)
- Not fitting the band’s reserved stage style
- Not aligning with the group’s image
She was replaced by Paz Lenchantin, though many fans still loved Kim’s punk energy.
⭐ FINAL THOUGHTS
Getting fired from a band hurts — especially when it’s for something as brutal as “not being good enough.” But as many of these musicians proved, a setback can be the spark for something huge:
- Mustaine formed Megadeth
- Pete Best found peace and legacy
- Chad Channing earned his place in Nirvana history
- Jason Everman became a literal war hero
Whether fair or not, every dismissal helped shape music history in strange, unexpected ways.
