The Day the Empire Finally Said the Quiet Part Out Loud
For years, fans have whispered it in pubs, screamed it on forums, and raged about it in sweaty mosh pits: Ticketmaster and Live Nation are scalping their own bloody tickets. Well, guess what? The mask’s slipped, the curtain’s fallen, and the beast has admitted it. Live Nation have finally confessed that they’ve been placing tickets directly on resale sites at inflated prices.
Not fans. Not shady touts on the corner outside Brixton Academy. Them. Themselves.
This isn’t just dodgy — it’s like your local chippy serving you cod, then sneaking outside, putting the same fish on eBay, and flogging it back to you at triple the price. Absolute stitch-up.
A Quick Reminder: Who the Hell Are Live Nation?
If you’ve been living under a speaker stack for the last two decades, here’s the lay of the land:
- Live Nation: The world’s biggest concert promoter.
- Ticketmaster: The biggest ticketing company in the universe.
- They merged in 2010, creating a Frankenstein mega-corp that controls venues, tickets, tours, festivals, and your pint of Carling.
In the UK, in the US, and basically everywhere that has a decent rock gig, Live Nation are the gatekeepers. Want to see Metallica? AC/DC? Billie Eilish? Even the Steelhouse up the mountain can’t sneeze without feeling the Live Nation draft.
So when they scalp their own tickets, it isn’t just a shady little sideline. It’s the fox running the henhouse, the referee fixing the match, and the promoter picking your pocket while you’re in the queue.
Pearl Jam vs Ticketmaster – The ’90s Battle That Warned Us ⚡
Cast your mind back to 1994. Grunge was still king, plaid shirts ruled, and Pearl Jam were the biggest band in America not named Nirvana. But Eddie Vedder and co. decided to take on Ticketmaster.
Why? Because even back then, they’d noticed fans getting fleeced. Service fees stacked higher than Stone Gossard’s amps. Tickets mysteriously unavailable, then reappearing at premium prices. Sound familiar? 👀
Pearl Jam tried to organise their own non-Ticketmaster tour. What happened? Venues mysteriously “unavailable,” promoters pressured, radio silence. They fought the system and basically lost. Ticketmaster crushed them.
And here we are 30 years later, with Live Nation now openly admitting they were playing the tout game themselves. Pearl Jam weren’t paranoid — they were prophets.
Self-Scalping 101: How the Scam Worked 💸
So how exactly did Live Nation pull off their own resale hustle? Simple, mun:
- Hold Back Tickets – Instead of putting all the tickets on general sale, they’d mysteriously vanish.
- Feed Them to Resale Platforms – These tickets popped up instantly on Ticketmaster’s own resale sites.
- Jack Up the Prices – Suddenly your £65 ticket is £250 “platinum” — except there’s nothing platinum about it except the emptying of your wallet.
- Rake in Extra Profits – Both from the initial sale and the resale fees. Double-dip, baby.
And fans were left scratching their heads thinking they’d missed out because touts were faster. Nope. It was the house, mun. The bloody house always wins.
Fan Fury: Stories From the Front Row (Or Back, If You Couldn’t Afford It) 😡
We spoke to punters who’ve been through this nightmare, and the tales will make your blood boil faster than a spilled Strongbow on a hot Download day.
- Sophie, Cardiff: “I tried to get tickets for Fleetwood Mac. They were ‘sold out’ in seconds. Two minutes later, there they were on Ticketmaster resale for triple the price. I was tamping!”
- Gaz, Birmingham: “Foo Fighters 2019. General sale was gone instantly. Checked resale — hundreds of tickets sat there at £400 each. Who’s buying that?!”
- Leanne, Glasgow: “We camped online for Harry Styles, only for every decent seat to vanish. Then reappear as ‘platinum.’ Pure daylight robbery.”
The phrase “sold out” doesn’t mean sold out anymore. It means “we’ve sold it to ourselves and we’ll sell it back when you’re desperate.”
This Ain’t the First Rodeo: Live Nation’s Legal Baggage 📜⚖️
Here’s the dirty laundry pile, mun:
- Pearl Jam’s ’90s battle – Lost, but proved the point.
- 2009 Bruce Springsteen scandal – Fans redirected to resale partner TicketsNow, with inflated prices. The Boss himself had to apologise (even though it wasn’t his fault).
- 2010s Lawsuits – Various state attorneys in the US dragged Ticketmaster/Live Nation to court over anti-competitive practices.
- 2019 Investigation – Canadian press caught Live Nation reps on tape admitting they put tickets directly on resale. They denied it at first. Guess what? Now they admit it.
- FTC Complaints 2020s – The US Federal Trade Commission has been sniffing around. The Taylor Swift Eras Tour meltdown put the spotlight back on them.
Basically, if there’s a courtroom somewhere with air conditioning, chances are Ticketmaster’s been in it.
The Platinum Problem 💀
Here’s the kicker. Live Nation invented a new word to make scalping sound official: “Platinum.”
Platinum tickets aren’t better seats. They’re not signed by the band. They’re just normal tickets, rebranded with a fat price hike. Marketing spin at its most shameless.
Imagine Greggs calling their sausage rolls “diamond edition” and charging £12. You’d laugh them out of Treorchy. But for gigs, fans are so desperate they cough up. And Live Nation knows it.
What Does This Mean for Future Tours? 🔮
Right, here’s the crystal ball bit:
- More Fan Backlash – Every time a scandal like this breaks, more fans turn against Ticketmaster. “Boycott!” they cry. But when it’s the only place selling tickets, how do you boycott?
- More Government Heat – In the US, senators are now baying for Ticketmaster’s blood. In the UK, MPs mutter about regulation, but little changes.
- Artists Taking Control – Bands like The Cure tried to fight back, demanding lower fees. Pearl Jam tried and failed in the ’90s. Taylor Swift has the power to rattle them, but even she couldn’t stop the meltdown.
- New Players? – Could tech disruptors or blockchain come in? Maybe. But for now, the cartel stands tall.
The reality? Unless governments break up Live Nation/Ticketmaster, the self-scalping game will carry on. Only difference now? We know they’re doing it.
Fans Deserve Better 🤘
Music should be about sweat, riffs, and singing your lungs out — not refinancing your house to see Iron Maiden. Fans are the lifeblood. Without us, these companies don’t exist.
But right now, it feels like Live Nation sees us as ATMs with legs. The band writes the songs. We bring the passion. Live Nation just skims off the top (and bottom, and middle).
What’s occurring? We’re being rinsed. Proper job.
Final Riff 💥
Live Nation admitting to scalping itself is like Darth Vader finally saying, “Aye, I’m the bad guy.” Shocking? Yes. Surprising? Not really.
This is the battle for the soul of live music. Fans vs the machine. And while Pearl Jam lost their war in the ’90s, maybe, just maybe, this time we’ve got a shot — if fans, bands, and governments actually push back.
Until then, keep your wallets close, your horns high, and your bin-jousting strong. 🏴🤘
