From gospel grooves to guitar-shredding glory, the story of the woman who invented rock & roll is finally hitting the big screen — and Lizzo’s got the role of a lifetime.
🌩️ The Big Announcement
Hollywood just dropped a bombshell louder than a Marshall stack at full tilt: Lizzo has officially been cast as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in an upcoming movie biopic.
Yes, Lizzo — the pop megastar, classically trained flautist, body-positive icon, and festival-slaying queen — is stepping into the shoes of the woman who pretty much invented rock & roll before the world even knew what to call it.
And we at The Riff Report are buzzing like a fuzz pedal in overdrive. Why? Because this could be the film that finally gives Sister Rosetta Tharpe her rightful crown: not just a gospel singer, not just an innovator, but the blueprint for every rock god that followed.
🎶 Who Was Sister Rosetta Tharpe?
If you’re sat there thinking, “Hang on, who’s this Sister Rosetta then?” — tidy up, butt, because you’re about to get schooled.
Born in 1915 in Cotton Plant, Arkansas (what a name for a town, mun!), Rosetta grew up in the church, playing guitar and singing gospel with her mum. But unlike most gospel players of the time, she brought something wild to the pulpit: a blistering, distorted electric guitar.
That’s right — while most folks were still strumming acoustic folk songs, Rosetta was plugging in, turning it up, and shredding in ways that would make Jimmy Page nod in approval.
Her style? A cocktail of:
- Gospel passion 🎤
- Jazz swing 🎷
- Delta blues grit 🎸
- And pure, unfiltered rock energy ⚡
She wasn’t just ahead of her time — she was lightyears ahead.
⚡ Why Sister Rosetta Matters
Every so-called “founding father” of rock points back to her:
- Little Richard said she was his greatest influence.
- Chuck Berry borrowed her guitar showmanship.
- Elvis Presley grew up on her records.
- Johnny Cash literally said, “She was my favourite singer.”
And yet… for decades, Rosetta was left out of the story. No Rolling Stone covers. No “Top 100” lists. No Hollywood movies. Just a footnote in dusty music books.
Until now.
🎤 Enter Lizzo
When the casting news dropped, jaws hit the floor faster than a drunk punter at Download Festival. Lizzo?!
But once you think about it, it makes perfect sense:
- Stage Presence: Lizzo commands a stage like few others. Sister Rosetta did the same — in churches, in clubs, and even in stadiums (she once got married in front of 25,000 fans at a baseball stadium, and yes, she turned it into a concert 🤯).
- Musical Versatility: Lizzo isn’t just a pop star — she’s trained in classical music, jazz, funk, and soul. She can handle gospel and blues no problem.
- Unapologetic Confidence: Rosetta smashed barriers of race, gender, and genre. Lizzo lives by the same mantra — bold, loud, and unashamed.
Basically, if anyone’s got the charisma and chops to pull off Rosetta’s story, it’s Lizzo.
🎬 The Biopic Boom
Music biopics are having a proper moment. We’ve had:
- Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) – Oscar gold 🏆
- Rocketman (Elton John) – psychedelic brilliance 🌈
- Elvis (Baz Luhrmann) – rhinestone chaos ✨
- Back to Black (Amy Winehouse) – controversial but compelling 🎤
Now, Hollywood’s giving the Godmother of Rock & Roll her spotlight. About bloody time, mun.
If done right, this film won’t just be another jukebox biography — it’ll be a rewrite of rock history, showing fans who REALLY lit the first spark.
🕶️ The Challenges Ahead
But let’s be real — this won’t be an easy gig for Lizzo. A few hurdles she’ll have to smash through like a Flying V in a glass factory:
- Guitar Heroics: Rosetta’s guitar playing was revolutionary. Can Lizzo convincingly pull off those lightning licks on screen? (We reckon yes, with a bit of coaching.)
- Accents & Attitude: Rosetta was a Southern powerhouse, mixing gospel sincerity with bluesy grit. Lizzo will need to channel that rawness.
- Balancing the Faith: Rosetta was deeply tied to gospel, yet she brought it into “worldly” clubs and arenas. The movie has to capture that sacred/profane tension.
If they nail it, this could be a performance for the ages.
📜 The Story We Want to See
Here’s what we’re hoping makes it into the script:
- Her Rise in Gospel: Little Rosetta blowing churchgoers’ minds with her electric guitar in the 1930s.
- Breaking into the Mainstream: Signing with Decca Records and touring during segregation.
- The Iconic Wedding Concert: 25,000 fans watching her say “I do” while blasting gospel-rock riffs.
- The Influence on Rock Icons: Cameos of young Elvis, Berry, and Richard sneaking peeks at her shows.
- Her Later Life Struggles: The fading fame, health battles, and late recognition.
- The Hall of Fame Induction (2018): A bittersweet finale — long overdue, but glorious.
🎧 A Beginner’s Guide to Rosetta’s Riffs
If you’re new to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, here’s your starter pack playlist:
- “Didn’t It Rain” – live performance that still gives goosebumps today 🌧️
- “Strange Things Happening Every Day” – considered the first ever rock & roll record ⚡
- “Up Above My Head” – duet with Marie Knight, full of gospel fire 🔥
- “Rock Me” – the 1938 hit that blew the doors off gospel conventions 🎶
- “This Train” – proof she could swing, stomp, and shred simultaneously 🚂
Stick those on and tell me she’s not the mother of everything you love about rock.
🎭 Lizzo’s Acting Chops
Some folks are asking: “But can Lizzo actually act?”
Truth is, she’s already dipped her toes into screen work — popping up in Hustlers alongside Jennifer Lopez and voicing characters in animated flicks. More importantly, she’s a natural performer. Every Lizzo gig is half-concert, half-theatre, half-revival sermon. (Yes, that’s three halves, deal with it 😅).
With the right director and script, she could smash this role harder than Rosetta hitting an open-chord slide.
🏆 Why This Film Matters
Beyond the Hollywood glitz, this biopic has massive cultural weight:
- Representation: A Black woman at the dawn of rock, finally given her flowers.
- Education: Millions of fans will learn the roots of rock go way deeper than Elvis shaking his hips.
- Inspiration: A new generation of musicians (especially women and people of colour) will see themselves in Rosetta’s story.
This isn’t just entertainment — it’s rewriting the textbooks.
🤘 Fan Reactions
The internet’s already ablaze with takes:
- Some fans are hyped: “Lizzo as Sister Rosetta? Perfect casting! She’s got the energy.”
- Others are sceptical: “Can Lizzo really shred a Gibson like that?”
- Musicians are buzzing: Guitar nerds are sharing Rosetta clips all over TikTok, with comments like “She invented my whole style and I never knew!”
The buzz is building faster than a Steelhouse queue for the beer tent 🍺.
📺 Our Dream Scenes
Because this is The Riff Report, here’s what we demand to see on screen:
- A shot of young Keith Richards and Mick Jagger seeing Rosetta and realising: “Oh, so THAT’S how you do it.”
- A slow-mo shredding scene where Lizzo as Rosetta cranks an amp to 11 while a stunned 1940s crowd loses their minds.
- A montage of her tour buses rolling into segregated towns, showing the danger she faced.
- A final Hall of Fame sequence, cutting from Rosetta on stage in her prime to her posthumous recognition. Tears incoming, mun.
🕰️ The Long Overdue Crown
It’s mad that in 2025 we’re only just getting a Sister Rosetta biopic. She should’ve had one decades ago. But maybe now’s the perfect time — with Lizzo at the peak of her fame, conversations about representation louder than ever, and audiences hungry for real stories of unsung heroes.
🎤 The Riff Report Verdict
This film could be the most important rock biopic ever made.
Forget your Freddie moustaches and Elvis pelvises — this is the story of the woman who made rock possible in the first place. And if Lizzo nails it (we reckon she will), then Sister Rosetta Tharpe will finally be a household name, right where she belongs.
C’mon butt, let’s make some noise for the Godmother of Rock & Roll. 🌩️🎸
