๐ŸŽค Welcome to the Jungle: The Madness Begins

There are rock bandsโ€ฆ and then thereโ€™s Guns Nโ€™ Roses. The LA street rats who rolled out of the Sunset Strip in 1985 werenโ€™t just another glam band with big hair and bigger egos โ€“ they were danger personified. Guns Nโ€™ Roses didnโ€™t want to be pretty, they wanted to be notorious. They were the soundtrack to bar fights, dodgy motels, hangovers that lasted three days, and an entire generation of kids trying to learn Slashโ€™s โ€œSweet Child Oโ€™ Mineโ€ intro on beaten-up Epiphone Les Pauls.

The story of GNโ€™R is equal parts glorious success and utter chaos โ€“ a band that somehow managed to blow up the world and nearly blow up themselves in the process. From riots and walk-offs to the longest album delay in history, their career has been one wild, messy, sweaty, beer-soaked ride.

So, crack a can, stick on your ripped denim, and join us as we dive into the biggest moments in Guns Nโ€™ Rosesโ€™ career โ€“ told the only way we know how at The Riff Report: loud, cheeky, and slightly daft. ๐Ÿค˜

๐ŸŒฑ Birth of a Beast (1985โ€“1986)

Hollywood in the mid-โ€™80s was a circus โ€“ neon lights, cocaine, and way too much hairspray. Amidst the glam metal gloss of Poison and Mรถtley Crรผe, Axl Rose (vocals) and Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar) decided they needed something filthier. They joined forces with Slash (lead guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), and Steven Adler (drums), creating a line-up that would go down in history as the โ€œclassic five.โ€

Their first gigs werenโ€™t polished showcases โ€“ they were wars. Guns Nโ€™ Roses built their rep in grimy LA clubs like The Troubadour, the Whisky a Go Go, and the Roxy. Word spread fast: these lads werenโ€™t miming glam poses, they were dangerous. Theyโ€™d drink you under the table, start a bar brawl, and then melt your face with โ€œNightrain.โ€

By โ€™86, Geffen Records signed them. The band moved into one filthy apartment, lived off cheap booze, and rehearsed like maniacs. Duff later said: โ€œWe had no money, no food, but we had each other and these songs. We believed we were the best band in the world.โ€ Proper job.

๐Ÿ’ฟ Appetite for Destruction (1987โ€“1989)

If you had to pick one debut album that redefined rock, Appetite for Destruction is it. Released in July 1987, it was raw, sleazy, and absolutely unstoppable. The record didnโ€™t just sell โ€“ it exploded.

โ€œWelcome to the Jungleโ€ was the opening punch, a snarling anthem that captured the bandโ€™s whole vibe: dangerous, desperate, and full of swagger. MTV reluctantly played the video at 4 a.m. โ€“ but fans phoned in demanding more. Before long, it was everywhere.

Then came โ€œSweet Child Oโ€™ Mine.โ€ Slash claimed he was just mucking about with a practice riff. Axl added lyrics inspired by his then-girlfriend Erin Everly, and boom โ€“ the band suddenly had the biggest power ballad in the world.

By the time โ€œParadise Cityโ€ landed, GNโ€™R werenโ€™t just another LA band โ€“ they were global icons. Appetite became the best-selling debut album of all time, shifting over 30 million copies. Every house party from Cardiff to California had it blaring.

But success didnโ€™t smooth their edges. On tour, they were late, wasted, and unpredictable. Fans never knew if theyโ€™d get the greatest gig of their lives or a complete train wreck. And honestly? Thatโ€™s why we loved them.

๐Ÿ“บ MTV & The Illusion of Control (1990โ€“1991)

By 1990, Guns Nโ€™ Roses had gone from Sunset Strip gutters to stadium stages. But instead of playing it safe, they doubled down on excess. Enter Use Your Illusion I & II, released in 1991 on the same day โ€“ because one album just wasnโ€™t enough.

The Illusion era was peak GNโ€™R excess:

  • โ€œNovember Rainโ€ โ€“ Axl at a piano, Slash soloing in the desert, a music video that cost more than some Hollywood films.
  • โ€œDonโ€™t Cryโ€ โ€“ A ballad that tugged at heartstrings while Axl and Slash tried not to kill each other.
  • โ€œYou Could Be Mineโ€ โ€“ Soundtrack to Terminator 2, which made them even bigger.

The Illusion tour was one of the biggest in history. They played to millions. But it also gave us one of the bandโ€™s darkest chaptersโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ’ฅ The Riot Years

July 1991, St. Louis: Axl spots a fan filming the gig. He stops the song, dives into the crowd, punches the bloke, then storms off. The band follows. Cue chaos. The crowd rioted, the venue was trashed, and 60 people were injured.

Montreal 1992: Metallica and GNโ€™R were co-headlining. James Hetfield accidentally set himself on fire during Metallicaโ€™s set (long story). Fans waited for GNโ€™R to start. And waited. And waited. When they finally came on, Axl left the stage early complaining about โ€œthroat issues.โ€ Cue another riot.

At this point, going to a GNโ€™R gig wasnโ€™t just about hearing the songs โ€“ it was about wondering if youโ€™d make it out without a black eye. Proper chaos.

๐ŸŽน November Rain โ€“ The Epic

It might be overplayed now, but back in 1992, โ€œNovember Rainโ€ was a cultural event. The video featured weddings, coffins, thunderstorms, and one of the greatest guitar solos ever filmed. Slash, in full leather, walking out of a church into the desert to rip a solo? Iconic.

It cemented GNโ€™R not just as a band, but as the rock spectacle of the MTV era. Kids didnโ€™t just listen to their songs โ€“ they lived inside their world.

๐Ÿชฆ The Spaghetti Incident & The Split (1993โ€“1997)

In โ€™93, GNโ€™R dropped The Spaghetti Incident?, a covers album that confused fans and critics alike. It had punk classics, some glam throwbacks, and โ€“ controversially โ€“ a hidden Charles Manson track. Not the wisest move.

Behind the scenes, the band was imploding. Izzy left, Adler was fired, and tensions between Slash and Axl hit boiling point. By 1997, the โ€œclassicโ€ GNโ€™R was dead. Axl kept the name, while Slash and Duff moved on. Fans were gutted.

๐Ÿšช The Vanishing Years (1997โ€“2007)

Hereโ€™s where GNโ€™R became myth. Axl vanished. Rumours swirled. Every year, fans heard whispers of a new album called Chinese Democracy. Every year, nothing.

Axl resurfaced with a new line-up in the early 2000s โ€“ Buckethead on guitar, Robin Finck on stage in bondage gear. They played festivals, but without Slash and Duff, many fans just couldnโ€™t connect.

Still, the legend of Chinese Democracy grew. Was it even real? Would it ever come out?

๐Ÿฅก Chinese Democracy (2008)

After 14 years and an estimated $13 million, Chinese Democracy finally dropped in 2008. The most expensive rock album ever made.

Andโ€ฆ it was fine. Some loved its industrial edge and Axlโ€™s insane ambition. Others just wanted Slash back. But regardless, it made history simply by existing.

Fun fact: some KFCs in America gave away the album with buckets of chicken. Imagine queuing for a Zinger Tower and getting Axl Roseโ€™s magnum opus as a freebie. Only in America, mun.

๐Ÿ‘ป The Ghost Years (2009โ€“2015)

GNโ€™R toured, but it was never quite right. The shows were long, the line-up was rotating, and Axl still had a habit of turning up late. Hardcore fans stuck around, but casual fans pined for the real deal: Slash and Duff.

Then, in 2016, the impossible happenedโ€ฆ

๐ŸŽธ The Reunion: Not in This Lifetime (2016โ€“2023)

When GNโ€™R announced that Axl, Slash, and Duff were reuniting, the rock world lost its mind. Dubbed the Not in This Lifetimeโ€ฆ Tour (a nod to Axl once saying a reunion would never happen), it became one of the highest-grossing tours in history โ€“ over ยฃ400 million.

Fans flocked to stadiums worldwide. From Coachella to Download Festival, Wembley to Tokyo Dome, GNโ€™R proved they could still bring the fire. Axl even stepped in to front AC/DC during Brian Johnsonโ€™s hearing issues โ€“ and nailed it.

For many fans, seeing Slash and Axl share a stage again was like the rock โ€™nโ€™ roll apocalypse finally arriving โ€“ in the best possible way.

๐ŸŸ๏ธ Stadium Kings Once More

Since the reunion, GNโ€™R have played to millions. Theyโ€™ve re-released classics, teased new music, and continued to dominate the live scene.

Sure, Axlโ€™s voice isnโ€™t always what it used to be. Sure, they still sometimes run late. But seeing Slash rip through โ€œParadise Cityโ€ while Duff pounds out the bass is worth every penny.

๐ŸŒน Legacy & Ongoing Chaos

What makes Guns Nโ€™ Roses so special isnโ€™t just the hits. Itโ€™s the fact that they lived like outlaws and somehow survived. Theyโ€™re the last true dangerous rock band โ€“ unpredictable, wild, and utterly captivating.

From the Sunset Strip to stadiums, from riots to reunions, their career is a story of excess, ego, and riffs that refuse to die.

๐ŸŽค Encore: Why GNโ€™R Still Matter

Guns Nโ€™ Roses arenโ€™t perfect. Theyโ€™re messy, chaotic, and often frustrating. But thatโ€™s the point. In an age where rock stars are polished and PR-trained, GNโ€™R remain gloriously human.

They gave us the best-selling debut of all time. They gave us riots, epics, heartbreakers, and solos that make you want to quit your day job and buy a Les Paul. They fell apart, disappeared, came back, and somehow ended up bigger than ever.

When Axl screams โ€œDo you know where you are?โ€ and the band launches into โ€œWelcome to the Jungle,โ€ we all know the answer:
Yeah, mate. Weโ€™re right where we belong. In the madness. With Guns Nโ€™ Roses. ๐Ÿค˜๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ”ฅ

Michael

๐ŸŽธ About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise โ€” it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publicationโ€™s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist โ€” sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
