Glam Rock’s Sparkliest Sons Are Back on Top

Once upon a time in 2003, a gang of spandex-clad maniacs called The Darkness kicked down the doors of British rock with Permission to Land. They gave us “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” a song that still makes aunties dance at weddings, uncles headbang in beer gardens, and teenagers discover the joy of falsetto screeches. They soared, they split, they returned, and now – in 2025 – they’ve just done something nobody thought they’d pull off: landed their highest-charting album in 22 bloody years with Dreams on Toast.

And mun, it’s not just nostalgia doing the heavy lifting – this thing slaps. Hard.

🥖 Why Dreams on Toast?

Let’s address the loaf in the room. Dreams on Toast isn’t your standard album title. But then, The Darkness have never been a standard band. Justin Hawkins has explained (with his usual mix of seriousness and silliness) that the title is about “dreams being served up hot, crunchy, and ready for buttering.” Deep metaphor, or excuse for endless toast jokes? Who cares – it’s peak Darkness.

Honestly, it’s one of those album names that’s so daft it works. You can already imagine the tour merch: toaster-shaped lunchboxes, limited-edition Darkness butter knives, and t-shirts that read Stay Crunchy, My Friends.

🎶 Track-by-Track Breakdown

1. “Burnt at the Edges” 🔥🍞

An opener that starts with a lone, wailing guitar before exploding into a full-throttle riff that feels like Queen on Red Bull. The chorus is a glam rock chant about life’s imperfections – “We’re all burnt at the edges, but still we taste divine.” Justin’s falsetto hits a note so high it probably shattered every mug in Bridgend Wetherspoons.

2. “Jam Tomorrow”

A groovy, mid-tempo stomper with a cheeky nod to Alice in Wonderland. Heavy bass from Frankie Poullain, plus a chorus so ridiculously catchy it’ll stick in your head longer than Marmite sticks to the knife.

3. “Dreams on Toast” (Title Track)

The anthem. Big, bold, stupidly triumphant. Justin howls about chasing dreams, Dan Hawkins throws down riffs sharp enough to butter bread, and the whole thing feels like a stadium sing-along waiting to happen. Imagine 20,000 people yelling “TOOOAAAST” in falsetto. It’s happening.

4. “Butter Me Up” 🧈

The band lean into full comedy here. Double entendres so thick you could spread them on Hovis. Think “Growing on Me” levels of daftness, but with more sleazy funk grooves.

5. “Midnight Toaster” 🌙⚡

Dark, moody, surprisingly heavy. Could almost be mistaken for a Muse track… until Justin screeches about crumbs in the sheets. A live favourite in the making.

6. “C’mon Crumpet!”

Fast, furious, pub-ready chaos. Rufus Tiger Taylor (yes, son of Queen legend Roger Taylor) absolutely kills it on drums here – it’s got that proper rock-n-roll swing. Fans are already chanting “C’mon crumpet!” outside gigs like football hooligans.

7. “Marmalade Skies”

The ballad moment. Acoustic guitars, layered harmonies, and Justin pouring out vocals like Freddie Mercury possessed by Monty Python. It shouldn’t work, but it’s lush.

8. “Crumbs of Glory”

A hard-rock anthem with chunky riffs and a big, arms-in-the-air chorus. Think AC/DC colliding with Meat Loaf in a Greggs bakery.

9. “Rye Smile”

Pun title alert! This is pure Darkness – silly wordplay, sleazy guitars, and a cheeky wink. Somewhere between glam stomp and cheeky Britpop parody.

10. “The Last Slice” 🍞🎤

Epic closer. Nearly 7 minutes of Queen-style pomp, choirs, key changes, and Justin holding a note so long you could boil an egg before he finishes. Ends with a guitar outro that fades like smoke after a firework.

🏆 Chart Glory After 22 Years

The last time The Darkness were this high up the UK charts, Tony Blair was still in Downing Street, Nokia 3310s were the hottest bit of kit, and Metallica were suing Napster. Now it’s 2025, TikTok is flooded with “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” falsetto challenges, and The Darkness have somehow bridged the gap between nostalgia and relevance.

Dreams on Toast smashed into the UK Top 5 – the band’s best showing since their debut. Not bad for a bunch of rockers in their 40s and 50s who’ve spent two decades being written off by critics as “novelty.”

🥁 The Band Today

  • Justin Hawkins – Still the falsetto king, still rocking catsuits, now balancing silliness with moments of surprising lyrical depth.
  • Dan Hawkins – The riff machine, keeping everything grounded while his brother soars into the stratosphere.
  • Frankie Poullain – Funky basslines and the moustache that refuses to quit.
  • Rufus Tiger Taylor – The not-so-secret weapon. His drumming gives The Darkness a backbone of pure power.

Together, they’re tighter than ever – like a loaf straight out the oven.

🤘 Fan Reactions

Fans on socials are losing it:

“The Darkness just saved rock again, and they did it with toast. Absolute heroes.”

“Haven’t screamed falsetto this hard since 2003. My neighbours hate me. Worth it.”

“Butter Me Up might be the filthiest, funniest Darkness song yet. 10/10.”

And fair play, the fanbase has exploded with younger listeners discovering the band through TikTok. Who knew toastcore would be the next big genre?

🍺 The Live Factor

The Darkness are already teasing a Dreams on Toast UK & European Tour. If you’ve ever seen them live, you know it’s not just a gig – it’s a pantomime, a party, and a pub fight all at once. Expect:

  • Justin climbing speaker stacks in leopard print.
  • Call-and-response chants of “TOAST! TOAST! TOAST!”
  • Frankie pulling bass faces that deserve their own BAFTA.
  • Rufus unleashing drum solos that could raise the dead.

If you’re not losing your voice by the end, you’ve done it wrong.

🔥 How Does It Compare to Permission to Land?

Alright, let’s be real. Permission to Land will always be the band’s sacred text – the one that made history. But Dreams on Toast feels like a spiritual sequel. Where some of their later albums (Hot Cakes, Last of Our Kind) had flashes of brilliance, this one has consistency. Every track bangs. Every riff feels massive. Every lyric winks while still carrying heart.

It’s not just “good for The Darkness.” It’s just good, full stop.

🌍 Why This Comeback Matters

Rock in 2025 is weird. Metal has gone mega again thanks to Metallica and Maiden still touring stadiums. Pop-punk has had a TikTok revival. Emo nights sell out quicker than Sunday roasts. But proper, daft, unapologetic glam rock? That’s been missing.

The Darkness filling that void isn’t just nostalgic – it’s necessary. They remind us rock can be fun, flamboyant, and bloody hilarious without losing any power.

And seeing them chart this high proves fans still want larger-than-life characters with riffs that kick you in the teeth.

🏴 The Welsh Verdict

As we say in Wales – tidy, mun. Dreams on Toast is the album nobody asked for but everybody needed. It’s ridiculous, it’s brilliant, and it’s proof The Darkness aren’t just a flash in the pan. They’re the whole fry-up.

Final Word 🍞🎸

The Darkness have pulled off the impossible – 22 years after they first ruled the world, they’ve delivered a record that’s not just worthy of their legacy, but maybe even stronger. Dreams on Toast is funny, powerful, and full of heart.

So grab your air guitars, warm up those falsetto pipes, and get ready to scream “C’MON CRUMPET!” at a venue near you.

Because rock isn’t dead – it’s just been buttered, toasted, and served up by The Darkness.

Proper job. 🤘

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
