The ghouls have done it, mun.

Hard rock’s favourite masked Swedes, Ghost, have just pulled off the kind of unholy miracle that would make the Pope light a candle: they’ve gone straight to Number 1 on the Billboard 200 in the US. And not just any Number 1 — they’re the first hard rock band in half a decade to topple the pop darlings, the mumble-rappers, and the TikTok soundtrack merchants.

For a genre that’s been told time and time again that it’s dead, buried, and living in a pub in Wolverhampton, this is a colossal “sod off” to the doubters. 😈

🎶 The Album That Did It

So what carried Papa Emeritus IV and his Nameless Ghouls into chart glory? Their brand-new record, a riff-laden beast dripping with church organ drama, disco-metal grooves, and choruses that could fill Wembley.

Ghost have always balanced on that razor-thin line between metal menace and pop accessibility. This album leans even harder into that sweet spot — big hooks, lush harmonies, and enough guitar muscle to keep the headbangers happy.

Standout tracks:

  • “Communion of the Damned” – A proper arena-sized stomper with choirs layered so thick you could mistake it for an ABBA song until the guitars hit.
  • “Devil’s Ballroom” – A slinky, disco-tinged banger that proves Ghost can get funky without losing the metalheads.
  • “Seven Circles” – The anthem. Expect this one to close sets, with entire crowds chanting like it’s the Satanic version of “Hey Jude.”
  • “Burn the Veil” – Gothic, doomy, heavy, but still sing-along. It’s Ghost doing Sabbath cosplay and smashing it.

This record is tailor-made for crossover success. It’s heavy enough to please the faithful, but polished enough for radio DJs who wouldn’t touch Slayer with a ten-foot cross.

📈 Why This Is Massive

Let’s put this in context, mun. The last hard rock album to go Number 1 in the US? You have to rewind to 2020. Since then, it’s been a parade of pop powerhouses: Taylor Swift, Drake, Morgan Wallen, Billie Eilish — all dominating the charts while rock sat in the corner eating kebabs.

Ghost kicking the door down here matters because:

  1. It proves rock can still chart big. This isn’t a niche metal band topping a sub-chart — this is mainstream glory.
  2. It bridges the gap. Ghost are theatrical enough to pull in casuals but heavy enough to get the moshers on side.
  3. It inspires labels. Believe me, some record execs are now dusting off old battle jackets thinking, “hmm, maybe we should sign that weird doom band after all.”
  4. It’s fuel for the fanbase. Ghost fans are cult-like (in the best possible way), and this is going to make them even louder.

🎭 Ghost: The Show Behind the Music

Part of the secret here? The theatre. A Ghost gig isn’t just a show; it’s a ritual. Papa Emeritus IV struts around like a satanic Sinatra, backed by the Nameless Ghouls — masked musicians who look like they’ve just stepped out of a Hammer Horror remake.

The setlists mix crushing riffs with disco flourishes, and the visuals? Think stained glass, burning incense, and a Vegas revue hosted by Lucifer himself. No wonder casual fans are being converted left, right, and centre.

At festivals, Ghost steal the bloody show. Whether it’s Download, Bloodstock, or Coachella (yes, they did that too), they bring the firepower of Iron Maiden with the pop sensibility of Queen.

🕰 Rock History Repeating Itself

It’s funny, mun — every generation gets its “band that drags rock back into the mainstream.”

  • 70s: Queen mixed pomp and power.
  • 80s: Def Leppard and Bon Jovi made metal stadium-friendly.
  • 90s: Nirvana blew the doors open (and arguably slammed them shut again).
  • 2000s: Linkin Park fused metal with pop and rap for mega success.
  • 2010s: Foo Fighters held the torch.

And now? 2020s belong to Ghost.

This Number 1 isn’t just a fluke; it’s a line in the sand. Ghost have become the crossover act for rock in this era. They’ve taken the blueprint of past giants, added face paint and satanic pageantry, and made it work in a streaming-obsessed world.

👥 Fan Reactions

The internet has been wild. Some of our favourites:

  • “Papa Emeritus is now my Pope. Sorry, Vatican.”
  • “I just explained to my nan that the devil band is Number 1. She said, ‘proper tidy.’”
  • “Imagine being beaten by Ghost on the charts. Couldn’t be me.”
  • “Slipknot walked so Ghost could moonwalk to Number 1.”

Even non-metal fans are chiming in with: “I don’t normally like rock, but this album slaps.” That’s the magic of Ghost — they’re converting the unbelievers.

🎤 Festival Domination Incoming

Make no mistake, this chart success is going to translate directly into massive festival headlines. Expect Ghost to:

  • Headline Download Festival again, but this time with the confidence of a band who own the main stage.
  • Smash Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage (imagine the BBC cutting to shots of confused dads as Ghost belt out “Square Hammer”).
  • Take over the US circuit. Lollapalooza, Coachella, Bonnaroo — they’re coming for them all.

And honestly? They’ve earned it. Ghost shows are built for big stages. This is a band designed to headline.

💿 What This Means for Rock

Here’s the bigger picture, mun:

  • Younger fans see rock as cool again. Ghost aren’t dad rock — they’re fresh, weird, and stylish.
  • The industry takes note. Expect more budget thrown at heavy bands.
  • Legacy bands get a boost. When Ghost rise, so do streams for bands like Sabbath, Priest, and Maiden.
  • Other bands get hope. If Ghost can do it, so can someone else.

Who’s next? Could be Bring Me The Horizon with their chameleonic sound, or even Sleep Token, who are walking the same mask-and-mystery path.

🍺 A Cheeky Welsh Take

Let’s be real — if Ghost were from Wales, Papa Emeritus would be swigging a pint of Brains, leading chants of “C’mon butt!” and closing every set with a cover of “Delilah.”

But they’re Swedish, so we’ll forgive them. They’ve still got that knack for drama we love. And honestly? Seeing a metal band top the US charts in 2025 is enough to make me shout “lush!” out the window at passing cars.

🏆 Ghost’s Legacy Cemented

This is the moment Ghost go from “cult heroes” to “rock royalty.” Years from now, fans will look back and say, “Remember when Ghost hit Number 1? That’s when it all changed.”

Papa Emeritus isn’t just leading a band anymore — he’s leading a movement. And with this success, you can bet your last pint that Ghost will keep pushing the boundaries of what rock can be.

Final Word 🎤

Ghost have done the impossible: dragged hard rock back to Number 1 in the US. They’ve proven that riffs, theatrics, and a dash of Satan can still conquer the mainstream.

It’s a victory for heavy music, a middle finger to the doubters, and a tidy moment for rock fans everywhere.

So light the candles, put on your robes, and blast Ghost at full volume. The ghouls are on top of the world — and they’re only getting started. 👻🔥

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
