Right then butt, strap in – because this is one of those lists where the mosh pit didn’t stop when the music ended… it just got angrier, louder, and involved a few too many police vans 🚓🔥.
Here’s The Riff Report’s breakdown of 7 Awesome Live Performances That Ended In Devastating Riots – part gig history lesson, part cautionary tale, and part “what the hell were they thinking?” 🤘
1. Guns N’ Roses – Montreal, 1992
- What Happened: GNR were co-headlining with Metallica. Metallica’s set was cut short after James Hetfield had a nasty pyrotechnic accident, so everyone’s hopes were pinned on Axl and co. Trouble is, Axl wasn’t feeling it and bailed after 55 minutes, citing “vocal problems.”
- Aftermath: Crowd went full berserk. Fires, smashed cars, broken windows – the whole “welcome to the jungle” experience.
- Moral: Don’t follow a pyro accident with an early walk-off. Especially in Canada. They’re polite… until they’re not. 🍁💥
2. The Rolling Stones – Altamont Speedway, 1969
- What Happened: Hailed as “Woodstock West,” it was free, sunny, and… guarded by Hells Angels paid in beer. That’s basically like hiring a dragon to do your marshmallow roasting.
- Aftermath: Chaos in front of the stage during “Under My Thumb” led to the fatal stabbing of fan Meredith Hunter.
- Moral: Peace, love, and rock ‘n’ roll doesn’t mix with biker gang security and warm lager. 🏍️🍺
3. Nine Inch Nails & Guns N’ Roses – Buenos Aires, 1992
- What Happened: Opening act Nine Inch Nails got pelted with mud. By the time GNR came on (late, of course), the crowd had already lost patience.
- Aftermath: Rioting broke out, shops looted, police out in force. Trent Reznor later said it was “the scariest gig I’ve ever played.”
- Moral: You can’t spell “Buenos Aires” without “riot.” (Okay, you actually can… but you get my point). 🇦🇷💣
🤔 Why Are Guns N’ Roses Here Twice? Is That Bad Luck or Something Else?
Ohhh, see now, this is where the rock ‘n’ roll gods either have it in for Guns N’ Roses… or Axl has a knack for poking fate in the eye with a stiletto boot. 😏🎤
Here’s why GNR pop up more than once – and no, it’s not just bad luck:
- The Axl Factor – Punctuality? Optional. Patience? Minimal. One bad mood swing and you’ve got a crowd ready to riot.
- Big Crowds, Big Expectations – When you’re the band of the era, tens of thousands expect magic. Deliver anything less and all that energy turns ugly.
- History Repeats… if You Let It – Montreal came a year after the infamous St. Louis “Riverport Riot” in 1991, when Axl jumped into the crowd mid-song and bailed. Lesson not learned.
- Image vs Reality – The “dangerous bad boys” image sold records… but it also sold chaos to the fans, who sometimes took it as a green light to go wild.
It’s a cocktail of huge expectations 🍹, a volatile frontman 💣, lager-fuelled adrenaline 🍺, and a history of walk-offs that turned tension into total destruction.
Or, as we’d say in Wales – “That’s asking for trouble, mun.” 😈
4. Rage Against the Machine – Lollapalooza, 1993
- What Happened: In Philadelphia, the band protested censorship by standing naked on stage for 15 minutes without playing a note.
- Aftermath: The crowd went from confused to furious, bottles started flying, and the police stepped in.
- Moral: Rage for the machine? Nah. Rage at the band. 🚫🎸
5. Woodstock 1999 – Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff”
- What Happened: It was already a boiling weekend of heat, high prices, and bad vibes. Then Fred Durst decided to live up to the song’s title.
- Aftermath: Fences down, towers toppled, sexual assaults, fires, and looting. The final day turned into one of the ugliest moments in festival history.
- Moral: If you tell 200,000 dehydrated nu-metal fans to “break stuff”… they will. 🔥💀
6. The Doors – New Haven, 1967
- What Happened: Jim Morrison was sprayed with mace backstage after an argument with a cop. He decided to tell the crowd all about it – and insult the police while he was at it.
- Aftermath: The show was stopped, Morrison was arrested on stage, and fans rioted outside.
- Moral: Never mace the Lizard King. 🦎👑
7. The Sex Pistols – Winterland Ballroom, 1978
- What Happened: The Pistols’ final show before their first breakup. Johnny Rotten closed with “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” and walked off.
- Aftermath: Fans trashed the place, fights broke out, and the punk chaos spilled onto the streets.
- Moral: Punk gigs are like fireworks – enjoy the bang, but expect the mess. 💥🧨
🏴 Final Word
From sweaty arenas to open-air festivals, the pattern is clear: a mix of short tempers, bad planning, and rock ‘n’ roll unpredictability can turn a legendary gig into a scene from Mad Max.
But hey – if rock history’s taught us anything, it’s that chaos sometimes becomes the legend. Just maybe avoid throwing bottles at Nine Inch Nails, mun.
