A Full-Blast Birthday Blowout from The Riff Report Blog 🔥
March is a wild month, mun. One day you’re freezing your arse off, the next day the sun’s melting your face — and that’s just the weather in Wales. But March also happens to be packed with some of the loudest, boldest, and most bonkers legends in rock and metal history.
From glam gods to grunge heroes, fretboard demons to nu-metal scream machines — March babies don’t mess about. So strap in, tune up, and get ready to blow out some candles with riffs, screams, and the occasional mic twirl.
Let’s dive into the madness…
🎂 MARCH’S LOUD & PROUD ROCK + METAL BIRTHDAY LEGENDS 🔥
🥁 March 1 – Roger Daltrey (The Who)
Born 1944
One of the OG mic twirlers. Roger’s roar in Won’t Get Fooled Again could power the National Grid. At 80+, he still performs like he’s got a vendetta against silence.
🧟♂️ March 2 – Chris Martin (Coldplay)
Born 1977
Not strictly metal, BUT we’ve all sobbed to The Scientist. Admit it. And Arabesque had a sax solo heavier than some doom tracks.
🧨 March 4 – Jason Newsted (Metallica / Newsted)
Born 1963
Justice for Jason! The man walked into Metallica’s post-Cliff pressure cooker, got his bass muted into oblivion on …And Justice for All, and still soldiered on like a beast. Respect.
🎸 March 5 – John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Born 1970
An emotional shredder with a magic pedalboard. His solos in Scar Tissue and Under the Bridge feel like late-night existential crises. Beautiful chaos.
🎙️ March 6 – David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Born 1946
The king of slow-burn solos. Comfortably Numb still turns grown metalheads into weeping puddles. You haven’t lived until you’ve air-guitared it at 3AM in your dressing gown.
💣 March 8 – Randy Meisner (Eagles)
Born 1946
The unsung MVP of Take It to the Limit. Rock-meets-country crooner who laid down silky basslines while hitting harmonies sweeter than a Welsh choir.
🥁 March 9 – Shannon Leto (30 Seconds to Mars)
Born 1970
Underrated drummer with serious tribal groove power. Overshadowed by Jared’s Hollywood jawline, but Shannon’s percussion keeps the ship afloat.
🕷️ March 10 – Jerry Horton (Papa Roach)
Born 1975
The riff behind Last Resort, aka every teenage meltdown anthem since the year 2000. You’ve screamed it. We’ve screamed it. Your nan probably screamed it.
🎤 March 12 – Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Born 1956
The galloping god of bass. Writes 10-minute epics about war, death, and poetry like he’s telling bedtime stories. Runs across stages like he’s being chased by Eddie himself.
🤯 March 13 – Adam Clayton (U2)
Born 1960
The chillest man in rock. While Bono and The Edge do… whatever it is they do, Adam holds it down with slick, steady basslines.
🖤 March 15 – Bret Michaels (Poison)
Born 1963
Bandana king and glam-rock prince. Wrote Every Rose Has Its Thorn and gave us power ballads so cheesy, they belong on a cheese board. And we LOVE IT.
🎸 March 17 – Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins)
Born 1967
Pumpkin wizard. Voice of a haunted wind-up doll. Penned anthems for emos, goths, grunge kids, and everyone in-between. Oddly terrifying. Totally iconic.
🔊 March 18 – Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains)
Born 1966
Doom-laden riff overlord. Helped make grunge heavier. His harmonies with Layne Staley were spine-chilling. Still crushing skulls with those Dirt-era tones.
🧙♂️ March 20 – Chester Bennington (Linkin Park)
Born 1976
The scream that defined the 2000s. Chester could shatter glass and hearts in the same song. A voice that fought demons — his and ours. Forever missed 🖤
🎂 March 22 – George Benson
Born 1943
A jazz-rock guitar maestro with smooth grooves and slick licks. Maybe not melting faces, but he’ll melt your soul in 12 bars or less.
🧁 March 26 – Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)
Born 1948
The lips. The scarves. The screams. The chaos. Aerosmith’s frontman is glam rock’s glorious glittering goblin king. Dream On? Still a top-tier karaoke challenge.
⚡ March 27 – Mariah Carey
Born 1969 (allegedly)
Okay okay… not rock, but let’s be honest — Mariah has more diva power than most metal bands combined. Would love to see her on a symphonic metal track tbh 👀
🔥 March 29 – Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction)
Born 1959
Founder of Lollapalooza. Architect of alt-rock weirdness. He probably dreams in glitter and distortion pedals. Utter legend.
⚡ March 31 – Angus Young (AC/DC)
Born 1955
THE human lightning bolt. School uniform. Duckwalk. Eternal youth. No one riffs like Angus. No one sweats like Angus. No one rocks like Angus. 🎸
🏆 HONOURABLE MARCH RIFF-SLINGERS:
- Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) – March 17
- Wolfgang Van Halen (Mammoth WVH) – March 16
- Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) – March 20
- Benji Madden (Good Charlotte) – March 11
- Jerry Roush (Of Mice & Men, Glass Cloud) – March 15
💬 MARCH: A MONTH OF MADNESS
From punk pioneers to prog gods, nu-metal screamers to glam warriors, March is jam-packed with absolute monsters of rock. Whether you’re headbanging with Angus, crying with Chester, or floating into the void with Gilmour, there’s a birthday riff for everyone.
So if your big day falls in March… you’re in dangerous company, butt. 🎂🔥
