“Choose wisely… or face the wrath of the riff!”
Think you’ve got what it takes to outsmart the algorithm? 😈
Spotify stats just got brutal — because the cult-favourite music quiz game Stattogories has launched a brand-new Metal genre mode, and it’s like throwing your brain into a Slayer circle pit and seeing if it can make it out alive.
This one’s for all the metalheads, riff lords, stream stat nerds, and those of us who’ve ever yelled “This song deserves MORE plays!” while sobbing into a pint of Hobgoblin. 🍺
🧠 What Is Stattogories, Then?
In the simplest terms:
It’s Spotify stats meets musical Russian roulette — with a big ol’ twist of genre chaos.
Here’s how it works:
- You’re shown two songs from the same genre (in this case: METAL AF 🔥).
- You guess which one has more Spotify streams.
- Get it right = next round.
- Get it wrong = GAME OVER, poser.
- Rinse. Repeat. Rage.
It’s kind of like Top Trumps for metalheads, but instead of power stats, you’re gambling with your song knowledge and questionable memory of Spotify Wrapped lists.
🎵 Metal Mode Has Entered the Chat… and It’s LOUD
The new Metal mode is a steel-plated celebration of crunchy guitars, growled vocals, double kick drums, and questionable hairstyles. 🎤⚰️
And it features the giants:
- Black Sabbath – Will Paranoid destroy Children of the Grave?
- Iron Maiden – Does Run to the Hills outrun Hallowed Be Thy Name?
- Metallica – Is Enter Sandman still the king? Or has Master of Puppets dethroned him after that Stranger Things bump?
- Slipknot – Psychosocial or Before I Forget?
- Pantera, Ghost, Avenged Sevenfold, QOTSA, Gojira, Lamb of God, Judas Priest… and even the sneaky viral ones like Sleep Token or Spiritbox.
The roster is HUGE and the choices get sneakily harder the longer you last. It’s enough to make you scream “I was TAMPING!” at your laptop screen when you lose to a Nickelback song. (Yes, they sneak in. 😤)
🧨 The Rules? Brutally Simple.

🎧 Choose Metal as your genre
🤘 You’ll see two songs head-to-head
💀 Guess which one has more total Spotify streams
🎯 Right = next round.
☠️ Wrong = back to zero.
🔥 Bonus: There’s a streak score. Your longest run is what earns you bragging rights.
But beware:
Some songs are classics — but don’t stream well.
Others are TikTok faves — but you’d never guess.
Sometimes, the obvious choice is a trap, and suddenly you’re shouting “Who the hell is still listening to Disturbed!?”
😱 Why It’s Surprisingly Difficult
You’d think Ace of Spades would beat Killed by Death, right?
You’d assume The Number of the Beast slaughters Brighter than a Thousand Suns, yeah?
WRONG.
Because Spotify is chaos. It’s the Wild West. It’s run by playlists, recency bias, viral TikToks, and the occasional resurgence thanks to Netflix series (cheers Eddie Munson).
This game preys on your confidence and then double-kicks you in the face with a steel-toe boot of shame. 🤯
🕹️ Pro Tips for Surviving Stattogories: Metal Mode
🔎 Don’t trust nostalgia. Just because it feels legendary doesn’t mean the youths are streaming it.
📱 Consider viral boosts. Some songs get huge spikes thanks to memes, movies, or stranger kids from Indiana fighting monsters.
🧠 Learn your Spotify quirks. Spotify listeners love a sad banger or a dramatic chorus. Sometimes a 2021 ballad gets more love than a 1981 classic. It’s cruel.
🇪🇺 European metal fans stream differently. Bands like Sabaton, Nightwish, or Powerwolf are absolutely massive in Europe — even if you’ve never met a fan in Barry.
🎸 Riff Report Approved: This Game Slaps HARD
We gave it a go at Riff Report HQ. The result?
- One broken keyboard (I was convinced Painkiller had more plays than Turbo Lover)
- Three arguments over who’s more “mainstream metal”
- One team member who got a 41-streak and now won’t shut up about it
- Me: 7. Seven. I lasted SEVEN. And I write about this stuff. 😩
It’s embarrassing, addictive, hilarious — and 100% a tidy way to burn 30 minutes when you should be working.
🤘 Play It Now. Dare Ya.
Whether you’re a vinyl purist, a festival front-row warrior, or someone who thinks Load is Metallica’s best album (you’re wrong, by the way), Stattogories Metal Mode will test your brain and your pride.
🎯 Think of it as metal trivia with a Spotify twist.
💀 Think of it as a battle between your gut and the algorithm.
🔥 Think of it as your new lunchtime addiction.
🧾 TL;DR
- Stattogories is a web game that tests your song knowledge using Spotify play counts.
- New Metal Mode has launched and it’s heavy as a Mastodon album.
- Guess between two metal songs: which one’s been streamed more?
- Simple. Brutal. Bloody addictive.
- Play now or forever hold your horns. 🤘
