Let’s face it: without the mighty guitar, metal just wouldn’t be metal. It’s the six-string sorcery that fuels the pit, splits skulls, and melts faces like a dodgy kebab at 3am. From thrash titans to doom wizards, here are 12 heavy metal guitarists you absolutely MUST listen to before your ears fall off and your soul turns acoustic. 🪕
1. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
Genre: Doom / Heavy Metal
The godfather of all riffs. 🤘
With fingers forged by fate (he literally lost the tips of two!), Iommi gave us the blueprint for heavy metal. Every downtuned riff he conjured from his SG birthed a genre. Listen to “Children of the Grave” or “Symptom of the Universe” and tell us your spine isn’t rattling.
Must-hear track: Into the Void
2. Dimebag Darrell (Pantera)
Genre: Groove Metal
If groove had a face, it’d be Dime’s cheeky grin. 😈
A master of pinch harmonics and whiskey-fuelled solos, Dimebag reinvented the metal wheel in the ’90s. His riffs were chonky, his tone was razor-sharp, and his solos? Searing.
Must-hear track: Cemetery Gates (that outro solo, mun 😭)
3. Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
Genre: Thrash Metal
The wah-wah wizard of thrash. 🌀
Sure, Hetfield gets love for the riffs, but Kirk’s solos are lightning bolts wrapped in leather. His melodic shredding helped shape Metallica’s rise to world domination.
Must-hear track: Fade to Black
4. Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne)
Genre: Neoclassical Heavy Metal
Riffing with a touch of class. 🎻
Randy took classical training, dipped it in distortion, and blew minds. His work on Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman gave Ozzy a post-Sabbath rebirth and us a lesson in metal elegance.
Must-hear track: Mr. Crowley
5. Dave Mustaine (Megadeth)
Genre: Thrash Metal
Snarling, speed-freak riff machine. ⚙️
Megadeth’s main man combines razor-sharp rhythm with political fury. Mustaine’s riffs don’t just shred—they stab. His solos are like a caffeine overdose during a motorway chase.
Must-hear track: Holy Wars… The Punishment Due
6. Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne)
Genre: Southern Groove / Heavy Metal
Pinch harmonics? Check. Viking beard? Double check.
Zakk’s guitar sounds like it’s been through a bar fight and came out stronger. Whether backing Ozzy or fronting BLS, his solos scream, cry, and punch you in the gut.
Must-hear track: Stillborn
7. Adrian Smith & Dave Murray (Iron Maiden)
Genre: NWOBHM
Twin guitars of the gods. ⚔️
We couldn’t separate them if we tried! Smith brings bluesy flair, Murray delivers fluid speed, and together they forge iconic harmonies that’ve soundtracked mosh pits for decades.
Must-hear track: Hallowed Be Thy Name
8. Tosin Abasi (Animals as Leaders)
Genre: Progressive Metal / Djent
Alien finger wizardry. 👽🎸
Tosin doesn’t just play guitar—he transcends it. With 8-string insanity and jazz-fusion oddity, he redefines metal’s outer limits. Not your dad’s metal, butt.
Must-hear track: CAFO
9. Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom)
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
Finnish fury with a Fender. ⚰️
Alexi shredded like a bat out of Helsinki, blending neoclassical finesse with death metal brutality. A true virtuoso who’s sorely missed.
Must-hear track: Are You Dead Yet?
10. Michael Amott (Arch Enemy, Carcass)
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
The man makes brutality sound… lush?! 🌹
With his fluid soloing and killer melodies, Amott helped make melodic death metal a proper genre. Plus, his riffs are catchier than the chorus of a Eurovision banger.
Must-hear track: Nemesis
11. Jim Root & Mick Thomson (Slipknot)
Genre: Nu / Groove / Extreme Metal
Masked madness. 🔥
Together, they create a wall of sound that’s as terrifying as it is technical. Mick’s the machine. Jim’s the feel. And those downtuned riffs? Filthy in the best way.
Must-hear track: Before I Forget
12. Yngwie Malmsteen (Solo)
Genre: Neoclassical Shred
Because subtlety is for cowards. 🦚
Yngwie doesn’t walk—he shreds everywhere he goes. A pioneer of sweep picking, this flamboyant Swede lit the world on fire with speed, scale, and sass.
Must-hear track: Far Beyond the Sun
