A Riff Report Blog Post Full of Nostalgia, Rarity, and Potential Riches

๐Ÿ“€๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿค˜

You ever stumble across an old CD in your attic, look at the cover, and go โ€œBlimey, I forgot I even had thisโ€? Well, guess what โ€“ that little silver disc might be worth more than your first car. Seriously. In the mad world of music collectors, 1990s CDs have become holy grails, with some going for four-figure sums.

Letโ€™s dive into the discs that could buy you a new Les Paul, a Glastonbury VIP ticket, or a lifetime supply of sausage rolls from Greggs. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

๐ŸŽค 1. Michael Jackson โ€“ Smile (1995)

Estimated Value: ๐Ÿ’ท ยฃ1,000 โ€“ ยฃ3,000+

Tidy bit of trivia: this German-only release was pulled almost immediately after pressing. Barely any made it into the wild. If youโ€™ve got one, especially in mint condition or sealed, youโ€™ve basically got a collectorโ€™s unicorn. MJโ€™s haunting take on the Charlie Chaplin classic has never sounded so lucrative. ๐ŸŒ™โœจ

๐Ÿ•บ Warning: Many fakes float around โ€“ check the catalogue number and get it authenticated before listing it on eBay and expecting a new motor in return.

๐ŸŽธ 2. Coldplay โ€“ Safety EP (1998)

Estimated Value: ๐Ÿ’ท ยฃ1,500 โ€“ ยฃ2,500+

Back when Coldplay were just Chris Martin and a dream, they pressed 500 copies of this 3-track EP โ€“ most handed out to industry bods and mates. If one of those copies fell into your lap back in the day and somehow survived 20 years of glove boxes and house moves, youโ€™ve got yourself a bloody goldmine.

And yes โ€“ the artworkโ€™s proper boring. But the price tag? Not so much. ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿ’Ž

๐Ÿ–ค 3. Nirvana โ€“ Pennyroyal Tea (1994)

Estimated Value: ๐Ÿ’ท ยฃ500 โ€“ ยฃ1,200

Originally slated as a single before Kurtโ€™s tragic death, the release was pulled worldwideโ€ฆ except in Germany (again, what is it with rare CDs and Germany?). This oneโ€™s become a grail item for Nirvana collectors.

If youโ€™ve got the Heart-Shaped Box-style artwork with โ€œPennyroyal Teaโ€ on it โ€“ donโ€™t chuck it in your car boot box, mun. Itโ€™s worth a tidy wedge. ๐Ÿ–ค๐ŸŽถ

โ˜” 4. Prince โ€“ My Name Is Prince (UK CD Single, 1992)

Estimated Value: ๐Ÿ’ท ยฃ400 โ€“ ยฃ1,000+

There are lots of versions of this single floating around, but the UK CD with rare remixes, particularly the โ€œClub Mixโ€ versions or misprints like โ€œMy Name Was Prince,โ€ are mega rare.

And Prince collectors are some of the most dedicated on Earth. If yours is pristine, the purple pounds will be rolling in. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ‘‘

๐Ÿ‘  5. Paris Hilton โ€“ Paris (Japanese CD, 2006)

Estimated Value: ๐Ÿ’ท ยฃ100 โ€“ ยฃ300 (and rising!)

Ok ok, this isnโ€™t strictly 90s โ€“ but the rarity and resale madness earns it a spot. The Japanese version of this debut (and only) album from the heiress/pop singer/party legend contains bonus tracks and unique artwork that collectors love.

Whether you bought it ironically or because you genuinely vibed to Stars Are Blind (we wonโ€™t judge), it could now cover a solid night out or a weekend away. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ƒ

๐Ÿง  Honourable Mentions โ€“ Rare But Real ๐Ÿ’ฟ

These arenโ€™t quite on the same level price-wise, but still well worth checking:

๐ŸŽง Iron Maiden โ€“ The Soundhouse Tapes (original CD) โ€“ ยฃ1,000+

๐ŸŽง Radiohead โ€“ Drill EP (1992) โ€“ ยฃ800+

๐ŸŽง Manic Street Preachers โ€“ Suicide Alley (first CD press) โ€“ ยฃ600+

๐ŸŽง Oasis โ€“ Live Demonstration Tape (early promo CD) โ€“ ยฃ1,000+

๐ŸŽง The Verve โ€“ All in the Mind EP โ€“ ยฃ300+

๐Ÿ’ก So, What Makes a CD Worth So Much?

Itโ€™s not just about the music (though that helps). These factors crank up the value:

โœ… Low press numbers โ€“ If only 300 were made, collectors go bananas

โœ… Withdrawn releases โ€“ The rarer the reason it vanished, the better

โœ… Condition โ€“ Scratched CDs? Nah. You want clean, complete, and ideally still sealed

โœ… Original packaging โ€“ That little promo sticker might add ยฃยฃยฃ

โœ… Cult appeal โ€“ Nirvana, MJ, Princeโ€ฆ their fans are ride or die

๐Ÿงฝ Top Tips Before You Sell:

Check the barcode/catalogue number online against collector databases Use Discogs, eBay Sold Listings, and fan forums to value your copy DONโ€™T rip it and bin it thinking itโ€™s useless DO consider authentication if itโ€™s worth over a grand NEVER chuck it in a boot sale for ยฃ1 unless you like watching people laugh all the way to the bank

๐ŸŽค Final Riff from Us at The Riff Report ๐ŸŽธ

You know whatโ€™s mad? That dodgy shoebox of CDs under your bed could be more valuable than your iPhone. Donโ€™t let your mum donate it to the local jumble sale just yet. Whether you were a teenage goth blasting Nirvana, a bedroom ballad-lover serenading to MJ, or a scene kid secretly bopping to Paris Hilton โ€“ your past might just pay your future.

So go on then, grab a cuppa, whack on some old tunes, and start flipping through your collection. Who knowsโ€ฆ the next time you see someone post โ€œI sold a Coldplay EP and bought a campervan,โ€ you might be able to say โ€œSame, butt.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’ฐ
