A Riff Report Deep Dive – With Extra Sass & Missed Chords 🎸😅

On July 13th, 1985, nearly 2 billion people tuned in across 150 countries for Live Aid — the most ambitious global charity concert ever staged. Wembley. JFK Stadium. Queen conquering all. Phil Collins doing time travel in Concorde. But while the stages were stacked with icons, some major megastars were oddly MIA… 🕵️‍♂️

So what happened? Were they busy? Bitter? Banned? Let’s riff through 10 of the biggest artists who didn’t play Live Aid – and why their guitars stayed unplugged. 🎸❌

1. Bruce Springsteen – “The Boss Sat This One Out” 🇺🇸

At the peak of his Born in the U.S.A. fame, Bruce was the most glaring omission. The man had just dropped an album that basically printed denim and sold out stadiums. So why no Live Aid?
➡️ Springsteen later admitted he just didn’t realise how important it would be. He underestimated the cultural weight and didn’t want to interrupt his tour break.
Tidy regret, that. Even The Boss gets it wrong sometimes.

2. Michael Jackson – “No Billie Jean, No Moonwalk, No Show” 🧤

MJ had been the king of pop since Thriller took over the world, but he was nowhere to be seen at Live Aid.
➡️ Word is, Jackson was wary of public appearances at the time and felt overexposed after “We Are the World.” Others say he wasn’t thrilled about the way Live Aid was being organised.
Either way, his absence was louder than a Vincent Price laugh.

3. Prince – “Too Cool for a Global Party?” 💜

Despite being asked, Prince declined. Why?
➡️ He wasn’t a fan of performing live on TV and said he didn’t believe the logistics were right. That, and his Purple Rain tour had only just wrapped.
Instead, he submitted a pre-recorded video for the show – very Prince.

4. Eurythmics – “Annie Lennox Was Ill” 🤒

This synth-pop powerhouse was meant to be there. Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were on fire in ’85.
➡️ Annie was reportedly suffering from serious vocal strain, and the band had to cancel a number of appearances.
No Sweet Dreams at Wembley, sadly.

5. Huey Lewis & The News – “Charity Conflict” 🎷

Huey Lewis took part in We Are the World but skipped Live Aid.
➡️ They reportedly pulled out due to concerns about where the charity funds were going. Lewis was outspoken about the need for transparency.
Fair play, butt. Not everyone’s just in it for the afterparty.

6. Culture Club – “Logistics + Label Drama” 🌈

Boy George and co. were synonymous with mid-80s pop. But on July 13th, they were nowhere to be seen.
➡️ George said in interviews that they couldn’t pull the band together in time, and there was label tension about commitments and appearances.
Would’ve loved to hear Karma Chameleon blast through Wembley tho!

7. Roger Waters – “Pink Floyd Problems” 🌑

While David Gilmour did play — as a guest with Bryan Ferry — Roger Waters was in full-on feud mode after splitting from Pink Floyd.
➡️ With no band, and tensions higher than Rick Wright’s synths, Waters simply wasn’t in a place to perform.
Shame. Comfortably Numb live with an orchestra would’ve been goosebumps central.

8. Rush – “Too Canadian, Too Busy, Too… Technical?” 🥁

The prog rock legends weren’t at Live Aid and barely ever get mentioned when people ask “why not?”
➡️ At the time, Rush weren’t the type of band that could just do a 15-minute greatest hits set. Plus, they were between albums and tours.
Also… can you even fit a Neil Peart drum solo into a 5-minute slot? Doubt it.

9. Cliff Richard – “Sir Cliff, Silenced?” 👨‍🎤

Cliff Richard was invited – in fact, he was a huge supporter of Live Aid behind the scenes.
➡️ But he reportedly chose not to perform live, despite being backstage and doing press. Some say he didn’t want to perform among more current acts and opted for a lower profile presence.
Britain’s pop grandad stayed in the wings.

10. Deep Purple / Marillion – “Timing and Tour Tangles” 🧙‍♂️

Both of these classic UK acts were gigging at the time.
➡️ Deep Purple had only recently reunited and were knee-deep in their comeback tour.
➡️ Marillion were off promoting Misplaced Childhood, and had tour dates that conflicted.
Marillion were asked but couldn’t swing it logistically.
Prog bands and their schedules – always a maze. 🎹🌀

Honourable Mentions:

  • The Smiths – Morrissey famously hated the idea. Quelle surprise.
  • Tina Turner – Wasn’t invited (???), but did Live Aid adjacent events later.
  • Meat Loaf – Not asked, still fuming. Bet he’d have smashed Bat Out of Hell.

Final Thoughts – Missed the Show, Missed the Moment 😬

Live Aid was a once-in-a-generation moment where music proved it could change the world (and melt some faces while doing it). Most of the absences above were due to logistics, illness, egos, or label politics – not apathy.

Some artists later said they regretted not being part of it. And who wouldn’t? Queen’s set alone made music history.

Still, whether they were onstage or not, their music shaped the era. But let’s be honest…
If Bruce had shown up and blasted out “Born to Run” with Bowie on sax? Mate, that would’ve broken the planet. 🌍🔥
