A swagger-fuelled salute from The Riff Report Blog
“Itβs a long way to the top if you wanna rock βnβ roll⦔ β Bon Scott
π₯ FEBRUARY 19, 1980 β WHEN ROCK LOST ITS RASCAL-IN-CHIEF
The amps still hummed. The beer was still cold. But the world of rock βnβ roll went quiet on February 19, 1980.
Bon Scott, the cheeky, wild-eyed, whisky-gargling voice behind AC/DC, was found dead in a Renault 5 after a heavy night out in London.
At just 33 years old, the man who drank like a sailor, screamed like a devil, and wrote lyrics like a back-alley Shakespeare was gone. π»β°οΈ
And rockβs swagger hasnβt walked the same since.
π€ WHO WAS BON SCOTT?
- Born Ronald Belford Scott on July 9, 1946, in Forfar, Scotland
- Raised in Fremantle, Australia β sunshine, fists, and loud guitars
- Spent his youth in trouble, bands, and prison cells (rock credentials = β )
- Joined AC/DC in 1974, replacing Dave Evans
- Brought charisma, filth, and lyrical genius to Angus & Malcolmβs raw riffs
He was the cheeky bard of bogan rock β part pirate, part poet, all power.
The guy your parents warned you about.
And the reason you wanted to join a band in the first place.
πΏ THE SCOTT ERA: THE MOST DANGEROUS FRONTMAN IN ROCK
Bon didnβt sing.
He snarled, laughed, seduced, and punched his way through songs.
With AC/DC, he helped create some of the dirtiest, catchiest, and most iconic hard rock ever pressed to vinyl.
β‘ Key Albums:
- High Voltage (1975) β Hello, world. Get ready to sweat.
- T.N.T. (1975) β βOi! Oi! Oi!β
- Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976) β The ultimate bad boy anthem book
- Let There Be Rock (1977) β The sound of a band exploding
- Powerage (1978) β Criminally underrated, pure lyrical venom
- Highway to Hell (1979) β The last, and the greatest. π₯
ποΈ WHAT MADE BON BON?
- Lyrical wit β rhymed βclassβ with βgrassβ and made it art
- Vocal style β raspy, raw, seductive and unhinged
- Stage presence β shirtless, tattooed, grinning like Satan at a keg party
- Saxophone player β yeah, that too! Wild.
He didnβt just front AC/DC.
He owned the stage like a punk Mick Jagger after 10 pints and a punch-up.
β°οΈ FEBRUARY 19, 1980 β DEATH BY ROCK βNβ ROLL
After a night of heavy drinking at the Music Machine club in Camden, Bon passed out in the car of a mate, Alistair Kinnear.
He was left to sleep it off.
But the morning after, he was found lifeless, having choked on his own vomit. Official cause: acute alcohol poisoning. Unofficial cause: being too rock βnβ roll for this mortal plane.
π¬ REACTIONS FROM THE ROCK WORLD
βWe thought he was invincible. Turns out he was just Bon.β β Lemmy
βHe was the loudest, dirtiest, funniest bastard I ever met.β β Ozzy Osbourne
βThe greatest frontman who ever lived. Full stop.β β Slash
βIt broke our hearts. But we knew Bon wouldβve wanted us to keep going.β β Angus Young
β‘ THEN CAME BACK IN BLACK
AC/DC couldβve stopped.
But just five months later, they dropped Back in Black β the best-selling rock album of all time.
Dedicated to Bon.
Written in grief.
Sung by new recruit Brian Johnson.
But filled with Bonβs spirit, swagger, and shadow.
βWe wanted it to sound like a celebration, not a funeral.β β Malcolm Young
And boy, did it.
Back in Black was the funeral.
And it still slaps.
π§ BONβS ESSENTIAL LISTENING
- Highway to Hell β His anthem. Our anthem.
- Whole Lotta Rosie β Based on a real woman. Of course.
- Let There Be Rock β A rock βnβ roll gospel.
- Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap β How-to manual for mischief.

- Rocker (Live) β The way he screams at the crowd = chills
- If You Want Blood (Youβve Got It) β Live energy immortalised

ποΈ BON SCOTTβS LEGACY: THE RASCAL GOD
- Statue in Fremantle, Australia β Shirtless, mic in hand
- Tribute gigs, tattoos, bootleg shirts, and shoutouts at EVERY metal festival
- Still the blueprint for every shirtless rock frontman with too much energy and not enough fear
- His lyrics are taught in pubs, garages, and whisky bars worldwide
- Still referenced by Brian Johnson, Axl Rose, Dave Grohl, and your da
π₯ FINAL THOUGHTS
Bon Scott was many things:
- A rock god
- A poet of the streets
- A walking hangover
- A punk before punk existed
- A tornado with a microphone
He didnβt live clean.
He didnβt live long.
But he lived louder than most of us ever will.
