A tale of madness, metal, and mud – only on The Riff Report 🎸🛠️🍻

🎬 FLASHBACK: WALES, CIRCA 2010 – “I’VE GOT A FIELD, A DREAM, AND A GENERATOR”

Once upon a damp time in the Welsh Valleys, two brave souls looked up at a remote, wind-battered mountain in Ebbw Vale and thought:

“Yep, let’s put a rock festival up there.”

It wasn’t a normal idea. But then again, Steelhouse was never meant to be normal. It was meant to be LOUD.

Meet the masterminds:

  • Max Rhead & Mikey Evans – part rock fans, part stuntmen, part mad scientists
  • Inspired by Monsters of Rock, Donington legends, and a total lack of anything like it in Wales

Their plan?

  • Hire a mountain 🏔️
  • Convince classic rock legends to climb it 🎸
  • Invite thousands of punters to camp in sheep fields 🌧️

Easy, right? 😅

🛠️ THE FIRST BUILD – “IS THAT A STAGE OR A GARDEN SHED?”

The first Steelhouse Festival in 2011 was, in all fairness… absolute chaos magic.

Stage? More like scaffolding, planks, and prayers.
Toilets? Let’s just say “limited” and leave it at that.
Access road? If your car made it up, it deserved a medal 🥇
Electricity? Dragged up the mountain in cable coils, powered by sheer will (and probably a very confused sheepdog)

“We had no money, no proper infrastructure, and no backup plan. But we had guitars, mates, and a massive field. Sorted.” – Max, co-founder

And the bands?

  • The first headliners? The Quireboys, FM and Tigertailz – absolute classics who took a chance on a muddy hill and a mad dream

🎤 CHAPTER 2: IF YOU BUILD IT… THEY WILL MOSH

That first year saw a few hundred fans, a monsoon’s worth of rain, and a vibe that felt like your best mate’s party but with Marshall stacks and actual legends playing.

“People thought it would be a one-off. Then we saw the crowd singing in the rain with pints in the air and thought – nah, this is gonna be a thing.” – Mikey

Steelhouse was born. The stage held. The generators hummed. And the mountain… roared. 🦁🎶

🧗‍♂️ BUT WHY A MOUNTAIN, MUN?

Most festivals are flat. Accessible. Dry(ish). But Steelhouse? Nah. Steelhouse climbs above the rest — literally and spiritually.

Why the mountain works:

  • Zero noise complaints (the only neighbours are sheep)
  • Stunning views that look like something from Lord of the Riffs
  • A feeling that you’re at the edge of the world, just you, the sky, and rock ‘n’ roll
  • The “you’ve earned it” energy after surviving the climb, the weather, and the portaloo queue

It’s more than a venue – it’s a rite of passage.

“Steelhouse isn’t just a gig. It’s a pilgrimage.” – every soaked fan since 2011

🛻 GROWING PAINS – AND A BIGGER STAGE

Over the years, the mountain learned to adapt:

  • The stage got bigger – now proper production worthy of a headline act (and fewer splinters)
  • Crew numbers tripled – with pros, local heroes, and lunatics with duct tape
  • Water, power, drainage, and trackway – all hauled up year after year by a team that deserves statues (or at least more Greggs)

By 2014, Steelhouse was pulling thousands. By 2016? International acts. By 2019? A full-on mountain-top monster.

🎸 LEGENDS THAT TOOK THE RISK

Steelhouse quickly became known as “the friendly festival on top of the world” – and bands started noticing.

  • Thunder
  • Uriah Heep
  • Saxon
  • Black Star Riders
  • Europe
  • Airbourne
  • Those Damn Crows (Cymru legends!)

Each band rocked up, saw the mountain, raised an eyebrow, then brought the fire.

“You lot are mental. I love it.” – Danny Bowes, probably, every year

⚡ WEATHER REPORT: “EXPECT MUD, HAIL & PYRO”

Steelhouse wouldn’t be Steelhouse without Wales’ finest sideways weather.

Legendary storms include:

  • The Great Gale of 2015 (blew a merch tent into orbit)
  • The Soggy Apocalypse of 2017 (someone floated by in a canoe. Unconfirmed.)
  • The Tarp Tornado of 2022 (10 tarps entered. 0 survived.)

Yet every year… it sells out faster. Because we don’t come for comfort – we come for carnage, camaraderie, and the crunch of the first guitar chord through mountain mist.

🖤 A FAMILY FESTIVAL WITH A METAL HEART

What sets Steelhouse apart?

  • It’s still independent
  • It’s still run by the same crew who built it with bare hands and banter
  • It’s still one of the only classic rock festivals in Wales
  • And it’s got a loyal fanbase who treat it like a second home (muddy, loud, magical)

There’s no corporate nonsense, no VIP ego-fests. Just good music, good people, and a mountain with soul.

🔮 THE FUTURE OF THE MOUNTAIN?

Steelhouse keeps growing – but it’s never sold out. It’s stayed real, raw, and proper Welsh.

“We could move it. Make it easier. But it wouldn’t be Steelhouse.” – Mikey

And he’s right. Steelhouse is the mountain. And every build, every cable, every crate of Carling dragged uphill is a part of its legend.

🏁 SO, HOW DID THIS FESTIVAL GET UP A MOUNTAIN?

The answer?

Bloody-minded passion. A touch of madness. And a LOT of wet socks.

It got up there because someone looked at a field, dreamed of Donington, and decided to throw a party Wales would never forget.

And you know what?

We’re still up here, butt.
Waiting for the next band to roar,
The next crowd to chant,
And the next lost welly to be claimed by the bog.

🖤 Diolch for being part of the madness.
Part 5: “Meet the Mountain Crew – The Unsung Legends Who Keep the Lights On” coming soon?

Let’s roll. 🎸
