By The Riff Reportโs unofficial mountain goblin correspondent ๐๐๏ธ
Youโve seen the graft. Youโve heard the chaos. But now weโre digging through the glorious afterbirth of a rock ‘n’ roll mountain festival to uncover the truly weird, the heartwarmingly daft, and the tales whispered in the wind through soggy tents and empty Strongbow cans ๐ป๐
๐ CHAPTER 1: LOST PROPERTY โ โHAVE YOU SEEN MY HATโฆ AND MY DIGNITY?โ
Every year, the Steelhouse Lost & Found looks more like the aftermath of a Viking raid meets a hen-do gone wrong. The crew open a big plastic box on Monday and stare into the abyss of festival forgetfulness…
๐งฆ Notable Finds from 2024:
- 1 prosthetic leg (still wearing a wellie โ proper job!) ๐ฆฟ
- A flask full of gravy labelled โemergencyโ ๐คทโโ๏ธ
- 3 inflatable crocodiles
- A Steelhouse 2016 t-shirt used as a pillow, blanket and towel
- Someoneโs Nanโs teeth. No oneโs asked for them back. Yet. ๐ฌ
โWe reunite about 60% of items. The other 40%? We just form a weird shrine in the crew tent.โ โ Sian, Lost & Found Queen
๐ค CHAPTER 2: FOUND LEGENDS โ THE FOLKLORE OF THE MOUNTAIN
Some people are born legends. Others achieve it by accident, via porta-loo disasters, unexpected stage invasions, or heroic acts involving bungee cords and gaffa tape.
๐ Steelhouse MVPs Through The Years:
- The bloke who turned up in a full knight costume โ camped, moshed, and cooked bacon in chainmail
- The girl who fixed her tent with a drumstick and chewing gum, then shared cider with half the crowd
- Stage Dave, who once re-strung a guitar mid-set while on fire (ok, maybe just a sparkโฆ but it was dramatic)
โHe turned up in a bathrobe and crocs, then started the biggest wall of death of the weekend. Absolute unit.โ โ Random punter on โCrocs Kevโ
๐ฆ CHAPTER 3: GHOSTS OF STEELHOUSE PAST
Oh yes, mun. They say Steelhouse has ghosts โ and weโre not just talking about that guy who vanishes every year right before itโs time to pack up.
Legend has it:
- The ghost of a roadie from 2012 still haunts the generator shed, whispering โmore bassโ into the wind
- An inflatable sheep named Shania went missing in 2018 and still roams the valleys, occasionally spotted by local hikers
- The merch tent is cursed โ every year, someone loses a shoe, a wallet, or a sense of self-worth in there ๐งฆ๐ซ
โI felt a cold chill by the backstage loo… turned around… and there it was. A lone, floating band laminate. No one around. Spooky af.โ โ Anonymous drummer
๐ง CHAPTER 4: THE FIXERS & THE PATCHERS
Even after the teardown, thereโs still work to be done โ the bits no one ever sees. Steelhouse is rebuilt every year, but repaired first. That means:
- Filling wheel ruts with gravel by hand
- Pressure-washing portaloos that fought the good fight and lost
- Untangling 7km of fairy lights, half of which mysteriously flicker Morse code
Unsung Tools of the Trade:
- WD-40 (used on everything except sandwiches)
- Duct tape (used on sandwiches)
- Zip ties, fairy dust, and sheer Cymraeg stubbornness
๐ง CHAPTER 5: CLOSING THE CIRCLE
When the field is finally clear, the sheep come home and the mist rolls back inโฆ the mountain exhales.
But Steelhouse never truly ends. It echoes in the Valleys, in the creak of a scaffold beam left behind, in the faint hum of โCrazy Trainโ drifting from someoneโs car stereo, and in that one lonely sock waving from a tree branch like a white flag of glorious surrender ๐งฆ๐ฒ
๐ FAREWELL FROM THE CREW (UNTIL NEXT YEAR, MUN)
The crew gather for one last brew, nursing bruises, sunburn, and emotional damage from spending 10 days in a field with 15,000 headbangers and only 2 hours of sleep.
โWeโve built Steelhouse in hail, heatwaves, and actual horizontal rain. Wouldnโt miss it for the world. Diolch, you mad lot.โ โ Gaz, who once fell asleep in a flight case
