đ Origin Story: Tragedy to Legacy
On 11th August 2007, Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Rob were brutally attacked in a park in Lancashire simply because they were dressed in goth-style clothing. Sophie later died from her injuries.
The sheer senselessness of the crime sparked outrage â but also a movement.
Her mum, Sylvia Lancaster, turned her grief into action by founding the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. It wasnât just about remembering Sophie â it was about changing the world so no one else would suffer for expressing who they are.
đ§ The Foundationâs Core Mission
đ Education
-
They run anti-prejudice workshops in schools, colleges, and prisons
-
Their sessions explore identity, diversity, hate crime, and how to be an ally
-
They help young people understand how bullying, name-calling, and violence escalate
âď¸ Hate Crime Recognition
-
Sophieâs case led to a landmark moment in hate crime recognition
-
The Foundation campaigned for “alternative subculture” to be acknowledged in hate crime policies
-
Greater Manchester Police were the first to adopt this in 2013 â other forces have since followed
đŁď¸ Campaigns & Outreach
-
Their message? “Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere” (S.O.P.H.I.E.)
-
They work with festivals, music venues, fashion outlets, and councils
-
The black ribbon and the S.O.P.H.I.E. logo have become global symbols of inclusion and remembrance
đ MyGivingCircle â Your Votes Have Power
đĄ What Is It?
MyGivingCircle is a charitable giving platform that:
-
Empowers people to vote for causes they care about (like Sophieâs Foundation)
-
Gives grants (sometimes ÂŁ10,000 or more) to top-voted charities
-
Matches donations and encourages social sharing to amplify visibility
đ How It Works:
-
Sign up for free
-
Vote once a week (completely free â costs you nothing)
-
Donate if you can â your donations count as extra votes
-
Get your friends involved â more votes = higher ranking
Charities that rank in the top tier during each round get grant money, which can be used for education programs, outreach, support materials, and more.
