There’s something magical about pulling into Bloodstock Open Air. The sound of distant guitars, the smell of burgers on the grill, battle jackets covered in patches, and thousands of metalheads ready for one of the greatest weekends of the year. It’s not just a festival—it’s a pilgrimage.

Whether you’re a Bloodstock veteran who’s been stomping around Catton Park for years or you’re making your first-ever trip into the UK’s biggest independent metal festival, camping can make or break your weekend. Turn up prepared and you’ll spend four glorious days living your best metal life. Forget the basics and… well… you’ll soon discover why every seasoned festival-goer carries spare socks.

So grab yourself a cuppa (or a beer—we’re not judging), and let’s dive into The Riff Report’s Ultimate Bloodstock Camping Survival Guide!

🎸 Welcome to Metal Heaven

Every August, thousands of rock and metal fans descend upon Catton Park in Derbyshire, turning peaceful countryside into a four-day celebration of riffs, circle pits, horns in the air and one of the friendliest festival communities you’ll ever experience.

One of the best things about Bloodstock is its size. Unlike some giant festivals where it feels like you’ve walked a marathon just to grab breakfast, Bloodstock is compact. Your campsite, the arena, food stalls and bars are all within a reasonable stroll, meaning less walking and more rocking.

And trust us… after a full day in the pit, your legs will thank you.

🏕️ Picking the Right Campsite

Not every camper is looking for the same experience, and Bloodstock caters for everyone.

🤘 Standard Camping

This is where the party lives.

You’ll find groups of mates blasting metal classics, neighbours introducing themselves over a cold drink, inflatable dinosaurs wandering through the campsite at 2am, and somebody inevitably deciding it’s the perfect time to sing Iron Maiden at the top of their lungs.

It’s loud.

It’s chaotic.

It’s brilliant.

If you want the full Bloodstock experience, this is where you’ll feel right at home.

😴 Quiet Camping

Fancy a bit more sleep?

Quiet Camping is ideal if you’d rather wake up refreshed than wonder why someone was playing Slayer through a Bluetooth speaker at half three in the morning.

Perfect for:

  • Families
  • Older festival-goers
  • Early risers
  • Anyone saving their energy for the pits instead of the after-party.

🚐 Campervan Camping

Prefer your own bed and a kettle instead of an air mattress and instant coffee?

Campervan camping is available and remains hugely popular. Spaces are limited, so they’re usually snapped up long before festival weekend arrives.

♿ Accessible Camping

Bloodstock continues to improve accessibility each year, offering dedicated facilities including accessible camping, toilets, viewing platforms and assistance for those who need it.

If you require accessible facilities, it’s always worth contacting the festival well in advance so everything is arranged before you arrive.

🎒 What Should You Pack?

Festival packing is an art form.

Pack too much and you’ll feel like you’re carrying your entire house across Derbyshire.

Pack too little and you’ll spend the weekend borrowing everything from your neighbours.

Here’s what should definitely be making the journey with you.

🏕️ Camping Essentials

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Roll mat or air bed
  • Pillow
  • Camping chair
  • Mallet for tent pegs
  • Torch or head torch
  • Power banks
  • Phone charger
  • Extension lead if using campervan facilities
  • Duct tape (the universal festival repair kit)

👕 Clothes

British weather has a wicked sense of humour.

It could be 28°C on Friday afternoon before turning into biblical rain by Saturday lunchtime.

Pack:

  • Waterproof coat
  • Hoodie
  • T-shirts
  • Shorts
  • Warm trousers
  • Plenty of socks
  • Underwear
  • Comfortable trainers
  • Wellies

Seriously…

Bring the wellies.

🪥 Toiletries

You’ll thank yourself later.

Don’t forget:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Shower gel
  • Shampoo
  • Deodorant
  • Wet wipes
  • Toilet roll
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Sun cream
  • Lip balm

Festival toilets and sweaty mosh pits aren’t exactly a winning combination without a bit of preparation!

🍔 Food, Glorious Festival Food

Gone are the days when festival food meant nothing but burnt burgers.

Bloodstock has built a reputation for serving fantastic food, with stalls offering everything from loaded fries and pizzas to vegan curries, burritos, Chinese dishes, breakfasts and sweet treats.

Expect to pay around £10–£15 per meal, depending on what you’re after.

If you’re looking to save a few quid, bring your own snacks like cereal bars, crisps, fruit and instant noodles for breakfast or those late-night hunger pangs.

🍺 Can You Bring Alcohol?

Yes—but there are rules.

Bloodstock generally allows festival-goers to bring a reasonable amount of alcohol into the campsite for personal consumption.

Glass bottles are not allowed, so transfer drinks into plastic bottles before you travel if needed.

Most importantly…

Drink responsibly.

Nobody wants to miss their favourite band because they peaked before lunchtime on Friday.

🚿 Showers & Toilets

Festival toilets have come a long way over the years, and Bloodstock keeps them well maintained throughout the weekend.

Showers are available too, although queues can get pretty lively first thing in the morning.

Our advice?

Go either early or later in the evening if you’re hoping to avoid the rush.

🔋 Keep Your Phone Alive

Your phone becomes your map, camera, torch, wallet and meeting point all in one.

Bring:

  • Large power bank
  • Charging cables
  • Portable battery packs

Charging lockers are available, but having your own backup is always the safest bet.

🌞🌧️ Prepare for Every Season

Bloodstock has seen glorious sunshine…

Torrential rain…

Dust…

Mud…

Heatwaves…

And everything in between.

Festival weather changes faster than a drummer during a blast beat.

Pack for every possibility.

You’ll never regret bringing an extra hoodie.

🤝 The Bloodstock Community

Ask anyone who’s been before and they’ll tell you the same thing…

Bloodstock has one of the friendliest crowds you’ll ever meet.

Need help pitching your tent?

Someone will help.

Forgot your mallet?

Your neighbours probably have three.

Lost your mates?

Someone will point you in the right direction.

Look after one another.

Respect the campsite.

Pick up your rubbish.

And if someone falls in the pit…

Pick them back up.

That’s simply how metalheads do things.

🎤 Arena Survival Tips

Before you disappear into the sea of battle jackets…

A few handy tips.

🎸 Arrive early for the bands you really want to see.

🎸 Drink plenty of water.

🎸 Eat properly.

🎸 Wear comfortable footwear.

🎸 Visit the merch stand early if you’ve got your eye on something special.

Popular shirt sizes disappear surprisingly quickly!

💷 How Much Money Should You Bring?

Here’s a rough guide for the weekend:

Item

Estimated Cost

Food

£40–£80

Drinks

£40–£100

Merchandise

£30–£150+

Emergency Snacks

£20

Obviously, if you’re anything like us, you’ll walk past the merch tent “just for a look”…

…and somehow leave with two hoodies, three patches and a new flag.

It happens to the best of us.

🤘 The Riff Report’s Top Bloodstock Tips

🔥 Label your tent—it makes life much easier after dark.

🥁 Bring more socks than you think you’ll ever need.

🍺 Stay hydrated between beers.

🎸 Check out smaller bands—you could discover your next obsession.

🤘 Chat to your neighbours. Some of the best festival friendships start over a borrowed mallet or a shared packet of crisps.

🧥 Pack waterproofs even if the forecast looks perfect.

📱 Fully charge every device before you leave home.

🗑️ Leave your campsite as tidy as you found it.

🎪 Why We Love Bloodstock

Bloodstock isn’t just another date on the festival calendar.

It’s a gathering of a community that looks after one another, celebrates heavy music in all its forms, and proves year after year that metal fans are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

From discovering your next favourite band on the New Blood Stage to raising your horns in front of the Ronnie James Dio Stage with thousands of fellow fans, every year creates memories that last long after the tents have been packed away.

So whether you’re heading to Catton Park for the first time or returning for your twentieth Bloodstock adventure, pack smart, look after each other, embrace whatever the British weather throws at you, and most importantly…

Have an absolutely unforgettable weekend.

We’ll see you down the front, butt! 🤘🔥🍻

Michael

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
