Imagine being on trial not for what you said—but for what you allegedly hid backwards in your music. That’s exactly what happened to Judas Priest on July 16, 1990, when they walked into a Nevada courtroom—stripped of their leathers and forced into stiff business suits—to defend themselves against a lawsuit accusing them of causing two fans to attempt suicide through subliminal messaging in their music.

Yeah, this actually happened. It’s one of the most bizarre and tragic moments in metal history, and it turned into a landmark free speech case that had the entire rock world watching.

⚖️ The Charges: “Do It!” and Death?

The plaintiffs? The families of Raymond Belknap and James Vance, two teenage metalheads from Sparks, Nevada, who in 1985 made a tragic suicide pact after an evening of beer, weed, and Judas Priest tracks.

Raymond died instantly from a self-inflicted shotgun wound at a local church playground. James survived, but with horrific facial injuries—and after years of suffering and reconstructive surgeries, he later died of a methadone overdose.

In court, lawyers argued that the Priest song “Better by You, Better Than Me” contained a backmasked command: the phrase “do it” hidden within the track. They claimed it pushed the teens to take their own lives. Another song, “Beyond the Realms of Death”, was also singled out, with its lyrics allegedly romanticising suicide. 💀

“Judas Priest and CBS pander this stuff to alienated teenagers,” one lawyer declared. “You have a duty to be more cautious when you’re dealing with a population susceptible to this stuff.”

🧠 Subliminal Hysteria: Satanic Panic’s Peak

The trial was soaked in the residue of 1980s Satanic Panic—a time when America lost its collective mind over the idea that heavy metal bands were corrupting youth with evil messages, devil worship, and (apparently) reverse psychology.

This wasn’t just about one band. Just years earlier, Ozzy Osbourne had been sued over claims his song “Suicide Solution” inspired a fan’s death. The media, naturally, whipped it all into a frenzy.

But here’s the kicker: Judas Priest didn’t deny that their music was dark, heavy, or angry—they proudly owned that. What they vehemently denied was the idea that they’d buried death commands in their tracks like some kind of brainwashing Bond villains. 🧠🔊

Rob Halford even demonstrated in court how if you played any record backwards long enough, you could start hearing what you wanted to hear: random phrases, nonsensical messages, or even your nan telling you to clean your room. 🎧

🎤 Metal on Trial: What It Meant for Music

The stakes were sky-high. The families wanted $6.2 million in damages. The band faced a potential precedent that could have literally changed the way music was made, sold, and interpreted. Could musicians now be held legally responsible for how someone interpreted their lyrics?

Luckily for anyone who enjoys freedom of expression (and a decent riff), the judge ruled in Judas Priest’s favour. The case was tossed out, with the court concluding that the so-called subliminal message was not a conscious, intentional inclusion—and even if it was, there was no scientific proof it could cause suicidal actions.

Proper job, justice system. 🏴‍☠️

🕯️ A Tragedy, Not a Target

Still, this wasn’t a victory lap. Halford and the band expressed deep sympathy for the families, acknowledging the pain that drove them to such a lawsuit. But they also made it clear: Judas Priest wasn’t the enemy here. Depression, addiction, and alienation were the real culprits—and heavy metal had long been a refuge for the people wrestling with those demons, not a trigger.

“If we were going to do that [insert hidden commands], do you think we’d put ‘do it’ in there? If we were going to get subliminal, we’d say ‘buy more records’.” — Rob Halford, absolute legend

This blog post is intended for informational and entertainment purposes only. The tragic events discussed are treated with the utmost respect for those affected. Mental health struggles are complex and deeply personal. The Riff Report does not endorse the view that music alone causes such actions, nor do we believe any band should be blamed for individual tragedies without clear, substantiated evidence.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please seek help. There are brilliant resources and support networks available. You are never alone.

Stay safe, stay loud, and look after each other. Diolch. 🖤🤘

🎸 Final Riff

Judas Priest didn’t just defend themselves. They defended an entire genre—and the right to be loud, raw, and rebellious without fear of being shackled in court.

Metal lives because it means something. And 35 years ago, it stood on trial—and won. 🤘

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
