Right. Let’s have a real one for a minute, Riff Report crew.
We shout about riffs.
We live for the pits.
We romanticise the tour van chaos.
But behind the noise?
There are real humans. Real pressure. Real burnout.
And that’s where Help Musicians and Music Minds Matter step in like absolute legends.
🎸 Who Are Help Musicians?
Help Musicians is a UK charity that’s been supporting musicians since 1921.
That’s over a century of backing artists when the industry’s chewed them up and spat them out.
They support professional musicians across:
- Financial hardship
- Career development
- Health challenges
- Crisis situations
Because the reality is brutal:
Streaming doesn’t always pay.
Touring is expensive.
Income can be wildly unstable.
Being a musician looks glamorous on Instagram.
The bank account sometimes tells a different story.
🧠 What Is Music Minds Matter?
Music Minds Matter is Help Musicians’ dedicated mental health service for people working in music.
And this is massive.
We’ve lost too many artists.
Seen too many public breakdowns.
Heard too many “I didn’t know where to turn” stories.
Music Minds Matter offers:
- 24/7 mental health support line
- Access to therapy
- Crisis support
- Signposting to specialist services
For musicians. For crew. For industry workers.
Not just the front person under the spotlight.
The tech.
The tour manager.
The session player.
The promoter running on fumes.
The whole ecosystem.
💥 Why This Is So Important
Let’s break the illusion for a second.
The music industry runs on:
Uncertainty.
Comparison.
Late nights.
Financial pressure.
Public scrutiny.
That’s a psychological cocktail.
And while we love the chaos of rock ’n’ roll, nobody should have to sacrifice their mental health for it.
Getting help isn’t weakness.
It’s maintenance.
Even the heaviest riffs need tuning.
🎤 The Hard Truth
Grassroots musicians especially are vulnerable.
They’re juggling:
Day jobs.
Rehearsals.
Travel costs.
Tiny margins.
Big dreams.
It’s exhausting.
Help Musicians and Music Minds Matter provide a safety net in an industry that doesn’t always come with one.
That’s not fluffy charity work.
That’s infrastructure.
💛 The Riff Report Take
We champion the scene.
But we also need to protect the people in it.
There’s no future of rock without healthy artists.
No next headline slot without someone feeling strong enough to take the stage.
Mental health support in music isn’t a side issue.
It’s foundational.
And the more we normalise talking about it, the stronger the entire scene becomes.
You can love the chaos.
You don’t have to live inside it alone.
