Turn the amps down, grab the popcorn and try not to start a circle pit in Screen 7 — rock ’n’ roll is heading back to the movies.

2026 has already been a surprisingly tasty year for music on screen. We’ve had documentaries, concert events and stories digging into some of the biggest names ever to plug a guitar into something dangerously loud.

And the year isn’t finished yet.

From punk-rock road-trip chaos involving Green Day to one of heavy metal’s most important bands finally getting the full documentary treatment, there’s still plenty for rock and metal fans to keep an eye on.

So cancel that romantic comedy, tell the superhero films to wait outside and get the overpriced cinema nachos ordered.

Here are five rock and metal films worth having on your radar as 2026 rolls on. 🍿🔥

1. 🎸 Nimrods: A Green Day Comedy

Release: 14 August 2026 in US cinemas

Now THIS sounds like our kind of nonsense.

Rather than giving us another straightforward rise-fall-rehab-reunion music biopic, Nimrods takes inspiration from the early touring adventures of Green Day and turns them into a coming-of-age comedy.

The story follows three teenage mates who become convinced they’ve landed the opportunity of a lifetime: opening for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve show in Los Angeles.

There is, naturally, one tiny problem.

They haven’t.

But why let a minor detail like reality get in the way of rock ’n’ roll glory?

The trio hit the road anyway, beginning a cross-country adventure that promises all the youthful stupidity, friendship, dodgy decisions and punk-rock spirit you’d hope for.

Directed by Lee Kirk, the film stars Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Foust, while Green Day’s music plays a major part in proceedings. Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool also contributed stories and experiences from the band’s early days to help shape the film. (Reuters)

And that might be what makes Nimrods so interesting.

This isn’t necessarily the definitive Green Day story.

It’s something potentially much more fun.

It’s a film about being young, skint, obsessed with music and stupid enough to believe that somehow — against absolutely all available evidence — your band is going to make it.

Basically, the spiritual experience of approximately 97% of bands that have ever existed.

🔥 Riff Report Hype Level: 9/10

Punk rock, terrible decisions and a road trip?

Stick the popcorn in a bucket and get us involved, butt.

2. ⚔️ The Ballad of Judas Priest

If there’s one heavy metal story deserving of the big-screen documentary treatment, it’s Judas bloody Priest.

More than five decades.

Birmingham.

Leather.

Studs.

Twin guitars.

Motorbikes.

Rob Halford.

And enough enormous metal anthems to flatten a small village.

The Ballad of Judas Priest traces the band’s extraordinary journey from working-class beginnings in the West Midlands to becoming one of the defining forces in heavy metal.

And there’s serious metal pedigree behind the camera too.

The documentary is co-directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sam Dunn alongside Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, making his directorial debut. It is produced by Banger Films, the team behind some seriously respected music documentaries. (Sony Music Entertainment Europe)

The film celebrated its German premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2026, but wider availability has remained the big question for Priest fans. (Sony Music Entertainment Europe)

Whenever that wider release properly lands, we’re expecting something considerably deeper than:

“They formed a band. They became famous. Here’s Breaking the Law. Goodnight.”

Priest’s history gives filmmakers an absolute mountain of material.

There are the band’s Birmingham roots, the evolution of their sound, Rob Halford’s cultural importance, changing line-ups, controversy, tragedy, reinvention and ultimately their position among the founding fathers of heavy metal.

Then there’s the music.

Victim of Changes.

Breaking the Law.

Electric Eye.

Painkiller.

If Painkiller starts blasting through cinema speakers at full volume, there’s a genuine possibility somebody in Row F is going to spontaneously grow a leather jacket.

🔥 Riff Report Hype Level: 10/10

This isn’t merely a documentary about a metal band.

It’s a documentary about one of the bands that helped define what heavy metal actually looks and sounds like.

Metal history, mun. 🤘

3. 🎸 Frampton

Peter Frampton’s life is almost tailor-made for a documentary.

Teenage guitar prodigy.

The Herd.

Humble Pie.

Solo stardom.

One of the biggest live albums ever released.

The talk box.

Career peaks.

Career dips.

And then one hell of a resurgence.

Simply titled Frampton, the official documentary premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June 2026 and explores the guitarist’s remarkable life and career.

And just look at some of the people involved in telling his story.

The film features contributions from names including Ringo Starr, Bill Wyman, Tom Morello, Sheryl Crow, Alice Cooper, Tommy Shaw, Nancy Wilson and Cameron Crowe. (Rock Cellar Magazine)

That’s not a guest list.

That’s somebody accidentally booking half a rock festival.

For casual listeners, Frampton will forever be associated with the phenomenal success of Frampton Comes Alive!

But that’s only one chapter.

His career stretches through decades of changing musical fashions, industry madness and personal challenges. That’s exactly why a proper documentary has the potential to be fascinating.

And let’s face it:

Hearing Do You Feel Like We Do blasting through a cinema sound system sounds considerably better than listening to somebody three rows behind loudly opening a packet of Minstrels.

🔥 Riff Report Hype Level: 8/10

One for the classic-rock faithful — and potentially a brilliant introduction for younger fans who only know the talk-box bit.

4. 🎤 The Bon Jovi Biopic

Now we’re bending the word “upcoming” slightly here because Universal’s newly announced Bon Jovi biopic is still in development rather than sitting there with a shiny 2026 cinema date.

But it’s one of the biggest new rock-film projects announced during 2026, so we’re keeping this one firmly on the radar.

Because come on.

Bon Jovi on the big screen?

There’s enough material there for three films and a six-part Netflix series.

Universal Pictures confirmed in March that a feature biopic is being developed around the New Jersey rock giants, with screenwriter Cody Brotter attached. The project is expected to concentrate on the band’s formative years and their journey towards stadium-sized superstardom. (The Guardian)

And what a rise it was.

From the New Jersey club scene to becoming one of the defining rock bands of the 1980s, Bon Jovi’s story includes enormous records, ridiculous tours and choruses specifically engineered to make 60,000 people scream simultaneously.

If the film reaches the Slippery When Wet era, things could get spectacular.

Imagine the cinema sequence.

The opening notes of Livin’ on a Prayer arrive.

Jon grabs the microphone.

The chorus hits.

And suddenly Dave from Newport in seat G14 is standing on his chair screaming:

“WOOOOOOAH, WE’RE HALFWAY THERE!”

Security won’t stand a chance.

The big question will obviously be casting.

Who plays Jon Bon Jovi?

Who plays Richie Sambora?

And most importantly, can the production source enough hairspray to accurately recreate the 1980s?

🔥 Riff Report Hype Level: 9/10

No confirmed release date yet, but this is absolutely one to watch as development continues.

If they get it right, it could be glorious.

5. 🔥 Whatever Comes Next From Rock’s Documentary Boom

Okay, we’re cheating slightly with number five — but hear us out.

Because 2026 has made one thing abundantly clear: rock and metal cinema is absolutely thriving.

Earlier this year we got Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition, a feature-length documentary charting Maiden’s astonishing five-decade journey. The film arrived in cinemas worldwide from 7 May and featured reflections from figures including Lars Ulrich, Javier Bardem and Chuck D. (Iron Maiden)

We also got Megadeth: Behind the Mask, which combined Dave Mustaine looking back across 40 years of Megadeth with a track-by-track presentation of the band’s self-titled final studio album. That cinematic event hit theatres on 22 January. (Megadeth)

Then there’s the brilliant The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel, exploring the crucial role original guitarist Hillel Slovak played in the band’s formative years. It arrived on Netflix in March. (BBFC)

Put all of that together with Judas Priest, Green Day, Frampton and the Bon Jovi project and something interesting is happening.

The music documentary isn’t disappearing.

It’s getting bigger.

And we’re absolutely here for it.

For years, brilliant rock documentaries often felt like something you’d discover buried on late-night television or sitting three menus deep inside a streaming service.

Now we’re increasingly seeing bands treat cinema as another way to celebrate their history.

Big screen.

Huge speakers.

Proper archive footage.

Maximum volume.

That’s exactly how rock history should be experienced.

🎬 Rock Belongs on the Big Screen

Rock and metal have always been cinematic.

Think about it.

The ridiculous personalities.

The tour buses.

The arguments.

The comeback stories.

The leather trousers.

The hotel destruction.

The albums recorded while everybody involved apparently hated each other.

You couldn’t invent half of it.

And when filmmakers get music stories right, the results can be brilliant.

The best rock films aren’t simply nostalgia exercises.

They remind us why we fell in love with this ridiculous music in the first place.

You hear that riff.

You see the old footage.

You watch somebody walk onto a stage in front of 80,000 people.

And suddenly you’re fourteen years old again discovering your favourite band.

That’s the magic.

So whether it’s Green Day-inspired punk chaos, Judas Priest rewriting the heavy metal rulebook or Peter Frampton reflecting on a lifetime behind the guitar, there’s plenty worth watching.

And if cinemas are willing to crank those speakers properly?

Even better.

We’ll bring the popcorn.

You bring the earplugs. 🤘🍿🔥

🤘 Which Rock Film Are YOU Waiting For?

Now it’s your turn, you beautiful bunch of riff-addicted lunatics.

Which band deserves the next massive rock biopic or documentary?

Ozzy Osbourne?

Black Sabbath?

Motörhead?

Slipknot?

AC/DC?

Metallica?

Bring Me The Horizon?

Or are we finally ready for the Steel Panther cinematic universe?

Actually…

Maybe civilisation isn’t prepared for that.

Drop your dream rock movie into the comments and tell us who you’d cast.

Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Zero Apologies. 🤘🏴🔥

Michael

🎸 About Michael Michael is the founder, editor and chief riff wrangler of The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock, metal and alternative music publication built by fans, for fans. A lifelong rock and metal fan, Michael has spent years immersed in the music, culture and community that surround the heavier side of life. From discovering new bands and digging through classic albums to standing in muddy festival fields, squeezing into packed venues and spending far too much time near the front of a stage, music has always been much more than background noise — it is a massive part of who he is. That passion eventually became The Riff Report, a publication created to celebrate the bands, artists, venues, festivals, photographers, promoters and fans who keep the rock and metal world turning. Michael spends much of the year covering gigs, festivals, tours, album releases, new singles, interviews and music news, with a camera never too far away and a press pass usually hanging somewhere around his neck. Whether it is a huge arena show, a major outdoor festival or a tiny grassroots venue packed with people discovering their new favourite band, he believes every part of the scene has stories worth telling. For Michael, one of the biggest joys of music journalism is being able to shine a light on artists at every level. The Riff Report is just as interested in the hungry independent band playing to 50 people as it is in the global act headlining to 50,000. Supporting unsigned, independent and grassroots musicians is a huge part of the publication’s identity, because every legendary band started somewhere. Sometimes the next big thing is not on a massive billboard or a major-label playlist — sometimes they are crammed onto a tiny stage in a pub, plugging in their own gear and hoping somebody in the room remembers their name. Michael wants The Riff Report to be one of the places that remembers.
